urban meyer, folks

  • From Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel (sorry, link for page wasn't working, fun read on UM)

Running off at the typewriter. …

It will be absolutely shocking if Gators coach Will Muschamp doesn't dismiss sophomore tight end A.C. Leonard from the team for the latest in the perpetual string of embarrassing UF arrests.

Florida TE A.C. Leonard suspended following arrest for battery

Muschamp is still trying to fumigate a dilapidated program left behind by Urban Meyer — a program bereft of not only talent and depth but honor and discipline. Muschamp dismissed his best player, Janoris Jenkins, from the team for a couple of pot arrests last year. Said Jenkins afterwards: "No doubt, if coach Meyer were still coaching, I'd still be playing for the Gators."

The charges against Leonard are much worse than the charges against Jenkins. The police report accuses Leonard of shoving his live-in girlfriend to the ground and trying to drag her out of the apartment by the hair (see Lawrence Phillips, Nebraska, 1995).

If these charges are true, it would be hard to imagine Leonard remaining on the team. He should either be dismissed entirely or suspended for a full season and made to take anger management classes.

So far, Muschamp has suspended Leonard indefinitely and released a statement saying such conduct will not be "tolerated" or "condoned." Muschamp's statement was strong, but not nearly strong enough. Muschamp has used more forceful language to complain about rotten officiating calls and to rail against the NCAA last year for its suspension of Sharrif Floyd. He should have added that such conduct by Leonard is "deplorable, abhorrent and inexcusable."

It's no secret Meyer recruited players and fostered an atmosphere that Muschamp is trying to clean up. Many of Meyer's recruits have transferred, not wanting to deal with a coach who actually holds them accountable for their actions. The arrest record under Meyer was embarrassing and already nine UF players have been arrested under Muschamp. It's no coincidence that eight of those nine players were either recruited by Meyer or committed to Meyer before Muschamp took the job.

Even so, Muschamp is now the coach and must play the hand he's been dealt.

His first play should be to discard any and every player who abuses women.

  • Would it be beneath BOB to hand out copies of that article to recruits? We all know some coaches would do it if the article was about Penn State.

Just realized that it might actually help Meyer recruit some kids.

Correct. Except at QB (unless Jones pulls his head out) Joe left Billy much better off.

  • I lived in Orlando for several years and it is interesting to see this come full circle AGAINST Urban Meyer. The Orlando Media (especially Bianchi) as always pro-UF and Bobby Bowden and FSU was the target. UF could do no wrong. Even when Zook was coach, there was countless articles about his approach and how he would win the big game one day.

I am glad the truth is coming out about that program....Meyer knew the team was a mess and due for a downturn with AL, LSU, Auburn and even USCe on the rise. He created the diversion to get out and then jumped back in with OSU and will run the same type of program there. I just hope Delaney and the BIG coaches/AD's hold him accountable and expose him for what he is and then he can just fade away out of coaching.

  • this is why meyer would not have been a great fit here.. the "win at any cost" mentality wouldn't have been as accepted heere as it will be at OSU..

I agree 100 %. We dodged a bullet with this one and I was very, very happy when Urban announced he was coaching Ohio. We don't need these types at PSU, let the Meyer's and the Pryors of the world go elsewhere. Just like I said with Pryor, Meyer is going to be at the heart of an ugly mess in the next 3-4 years.

Exactly. It was so sad to see many PSU fans in the tank for UM during last season.

  • Living in FL, Bianchi just likes to write to shock people and be different. He is a whiney little wimp. I did not read the article but found it funny that he had no talent. I understand recruiting sites are not perfect, bit if you look at his record with recruiting, there should be plenty of talent. His teams in the end lacked strength esp on defense. Hopefully he takes the bite out of OSU's defense.

I echo your thoughts on the recruiting. I have always thought Meyer is a very conflicted coach. He has a hard time dealing with wanting to win and wanting to do what is right. Unfortunately he seems to choose wanting to win too often.

I find it funny that people applaud and point to recruiting rankings so often but then when a new coach comes in and struggles than the cupboard is bare. I think its hard to have it both ways. As far as him recruiting criminals. Who did he take that every other team in the SEC wouldn't have taken? Issues disciplining them sure. Maybe he did embrace a somewhat lawless culture but as far as recruiting he was just living by the law of the land.

If he came to Penn state people would paint this as sour grapes just as Ohio St is going to do.

It probably is beneath BOB to do that, plus it would be a dumb idea because that kind of behavior would just beg others to hang Sandusky around his neck, and I'll bet someone could find articles doing just that.

  • I worked with Meyer along time ago when he was on Holtz's staff at ND. I can confirm that he is as shady as it gets. But, next to Charlie Strong, UM is a Saint. How that guy has skated through without any major hits is beyond me. That Kim Dunbar situation at ND years ago...got swept under the rug for the most part....and it was BAD!

I think Coach O'Brien has too much class to do that...he's a take the higher road type of guy!
