  • New coach O'Brien brings change to Penn State - ESPN

Bill O'Brien, a longtime Patriots assistant, is getting used to college players again. He's also trying to strike a balance between respecting the past and moving forward at Penn State.

  • There were a bunch today. All very good, I thought. ESPN has backed way, way off IMO. Guys like Maisel and Rittenberg, who both had articles today, are not stupid, and they certainly aren't thoughtlessly reactionary. In other words, they are not Skip Bayless, who if I ever saw him on the street would end up unconscious on the sidewalk (I will never, ever forget his comments about Joe faking his illness).

Maisel wrote an incredibly good article shortly after the November explosion that was grounded and thoughtful, and took on the complexity of the situation that seemingly no one else wanted too. Ever since then I thought he'd been very levelheaded about the entire issue.

Wasn't Skip Bayless caught in a lie recently (trying to puff up his HS basketball resume ) and Jalen Rose checked it and called him out on air...I am fairly certain it was him . Need I say more? He squirmed like a little weasle...

I won't visit the ESPN site.....don't want to give them clicks. Did Skip Bayless really claim that JoePa was faking cancer?

Oh yea. It was right after the family announced he was being treated. It was on that first and ten show or whatever it is.

That guy really has no information.. He'll literally say anything to take an opposing side of the guy sitting across from him. It was so nice hearing Mike Missanelli, a PSU grad, grill him two years ago about Philly sports.

Jalen rose is the most real dude ever. Say what you want, but I watched that Fab 5 documentary, and I found a new level of respect for him, and now this... Mad respect and props to Jalen for telling it how it is.

  • Wow. Watched a lot of the other videos after what Jalen said... Skip and the other writers are amazing with how they defend each other... Yet, they try to say that athletes defend other athletes lol Marcellus Wiley fries skip again... Jalen made Skip uncomfortable doing the exact same thing he does every day. Just look at some of the other videos... Pretty amazing. ESPN has become scumbag journalism... sensationalism... Everyone dont support First take at least. Worst of the worst... And I think Skip should apologize to the Paterno family. What he said about Joe faking cancer is just classless.

Jalen Rose is a piece of work. That Fab 5 documentary made him look terrible. Calling Hill an Uncle Tom for his parents being successful? Classy. Its evena worse whenoffers you realizea he paiddoes to dothe it soto he coulddoes spin the storyBulls in orderthe to makethe them lookwill like itI was nothat big dealthe and theirI sugar daddy was somethat kind ofof philanthropist. Hes awful to listen to as well. I mean horrible.

That said him frying Skip Bayless was hilarious. And he's worth keeping on just to bring him out of the bull pen for that. Watching the other guys' faces in that clip was awesome too.

He is real though! Actually, CWebb has always been my favorite Fab 5.

I understand what you are saying, but I also sort of understood what Jalen Rose was saying too. In the Michigan versus Duke basketball of the early 90s, he looked at Duke as being the privledged country club kids and he was part of the inner city Detroit school of hard knocks. He was just expressing his thoughts as a 19 year old kid who grew up with nothing.

  • This is one man's humble opinion, but I've found that there is usually a substantial difference between the ESPN.com folks (those who write and report and know the sports and the teams they cover) and the rest of the network (SportsCenter anchors, studio analysts, radio personalities, various talking heads) in terms of fairness and perspective. Maisel is one of the good guys.

Jalen really solidified himself as a stand up guy in my book, when he was arrested for DUI about 2 miles from my home in Michigan the night after the Fab 5 first aired last year.

Agreed. He may not look like it, but Rittenberg (he's a self professed nerd) is a guy you'd like to hang out with on a fall Sat. afternoon. Also one of the good guys.

What a circus of a show. When they brought in "stephen A. smith" I had to turn the volume down to 1.

  • This kind of goes along with what I was saying earlier in the thread. Dana O'Neil, a Penn State grad, writes some of the best college hoops features you'll see. Here's her take on the caravan:

Penn State Nittany Lions football rediscovering its place among the common folk -- College football - ESPN

Penn State basketball has always needed football. Men's hoops coach Patrick Chambers knows this. What's different now? Football, with new Nittany Lions coach Bill O'Brien at the helm, needs basketball, field hockey and just about everything else more than ever.

That has been one of my internal struggles. I don't want to give ESPN any more clicks (me not watching them on TV does nothing, but my clicks on their website definitely matter), but I enjoyed the works of their bloggers - especially the ones covering the Big 10 as well as Maisel. They're not remotely close to the likes of Andy Staples.
