  • Does anyone know if something like this is legal or allowed by the NCAA?
    What if next year, after the final Wiscy game, on the road... Coach O loads the team up on the plane, with the semester over, and flies them all to South Beach for a week instead of coming back to State College?
    I know they would not be allowed to practice, but could he just take them there for a few days?

    Or, what if they did the same thing next year, after the NE game at home, with school being on Fall break, and headed to Florida for 4-5 days and "practiced" down in Florida for the Wisconsin game?
    Kind of like a mini bowl trip, where the team gets to spend 4-5 days in the sun, etc...

    I know college basketball teams schedule exhibition games in Europe in the summer, and the team basically takes a two week vacation.. not sure how this is funded, or how they pay for it, etc?

    If we are unable to schedule an end of season game with Hawaii or whomever, is BOB basically allowed to take the team on a vacation for something like this under NCAA rules?

    I think that would fall under the "Special Benefits" section of the NCAA rule book. It basically says that a player cant receive anything that isn't also available to the student body as a whole. So unless they take the whole student body down, I believe that would be considered a violation.

    For example, a lot of colleges give you a lap top computer when you enter school. So as long as everybody that goes to a school gets a lap top, then it's legal for an athlete to get one as well. However, if only athletes are getting one and the rest of the student body doesn't, then it's considered a "special benefit" as he is getting one because of status as an "athlete".

    At the same time...didn't BOB take the team bowling that one time after practice? No doubt there's a huge difference in degree between that and a "vacation trip," but the base premise is similar.

    JMO, but I seriously doubt a trip would work. Even if it's somehow within the NCAA rules, I doubt the athletic department has the money, especially with $60m owed over the next few years.

    I agree but if they make the trip as a stop/layover from the last game (ie:all students do not travel to games with the teams) and then lets the kids spend their own cash at wherever they stop - they would get a trip together and the kids would get the flight for free anyway..

  • I think it was a few years ago, or might have even been Tom Bradley last year, but I remember the coaching staff had to get permission from the NCAA to take all the football players to a movie downtown.

    It so ridiculously outside the NCAA rules that it's not even worth talking about. As the previous poster said, you can't even take kids off campus for a meal/movie much less take them on a holiday.

    Maybe I am confused or "mis-remembering"... but haven't some college basketball teams, I thought I recalled MSU doing it a few years ago, traveled, as a team over to Europe during the summer to play an exhibition and do some sight seeing?

    Is there anything the team could do such as an "exhibition", etc over sea's or in Mexico or something like that... maybe well before or well after the season.

    Much different situation in football than basketball for going overseas.

    I think that is more like ND playing Navy over in the UK or whatever. So I think we could do something as long as we are playing an opponent there?

  • What if, after the season, the team could play as a scout team to an NFL team preparing for an upcoming game? Not sure if this could even be allowed or whether an NFL team would ever go for it, but hell...as a player that would be off the charts exciting.

    It would probably be some sort of violation of amateurism rules. Frankly, Emmert and the NCAA aren't going to do anything to help at all. They might let USC or one of their sweethearts get away with some sort of reward trip, but not us.

    Not just basketball, other sports do it too (and PSU has done plenty of foreign tours with their teams). A team can do a foreign tour once every four years - and it has to be over the summer. You don't see it in football because if a team does it, they are not allowed to play in a bowl game. I suppose it's theoretically possible for PSU to schedule a tour (one difficulty would be finding opponents that play American football - best bet might be Armed Forces teams, or maybe another college team on probation could go on the tour with you) but given the bowl ban, it wouldn't surprise me if the NCAA stepped in and said "no deal".

    Note: Central Florida is appealing their one year bowl ban that was handed to them by the NCAA earlier this year and they are eligible until the NCAA makes the ruling on their appeal. If the NCAA doesn't rule on the ban in the next couple of weeks UCF's ban will be moved to 2013 so they theoretically could be a candidate to go on an exhibition foreign tour with PSU. But to be honest, given the $60M fine facing the athletic department, I'm not so sure that spending a million bucks to go on a foreign tour would be a wise idea.

    Don't believe that's allowed either. Regular season games have a certain timeframe if I remember correctly.

    Not unless we dropped some other team from the schedule. Then we'd probably have to petition the Big Ten since there could be a conflict with the B10 championship game.
