help defend Joe and the football program against the NCAA

  • Hi folks, I'm interested in compiling a comprehensive list of all of the academic accomplishments of Joe Paterno's football program over the years. Everything. What I am thinking of is to produce a full page ad to place in national newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and the USA Today. The idea is to compile a comprehensive bulleted list of all the academic accomplishments of Joe Paterno's football program throughout the years, including rankings vs. the rest of division 1, and challenge all those who insist Penn State had a win-at-all-costs, football-is-king culture that completely subjugated the university's academic mission to explain how each individual bullet item supports that idea. I envision the challenge addressed to Mark Emmert personally but it would be open to all the haters out there There's some good stuff in last year's football game programs such as numbers of academic all-Americans and grad rates but I need help compiling a comprehensive list that will show overwhelming evidence to show that the idea of a win at all costs football-is-king culture existing at Penn State is a complete and total lie. I want a knockout punch thrown to that slanderous notion and I want it thrown to the chin of Mark Emmert. I have a vision for the design of that ad but will need help putting it together getting it out there an also obviously with funding and hope the PSU community can help with all that. We are at war and this war is a media war and we'll have to fight it on their terms in order to win.

    Some other things that we need to get straightened out is that I noticed that Joe's Wikipedia page still features some of Louis Freeh's lies like the notion that Joe orchestrated a cover up for Sandusky and also is still making the debunked claim that Joe lied to the Grand Jury about the 1998 incident. If there's anyone out there who knows Wikipedia it would be very helpful if they go clean that crap up.

    Also, does anyone have any idea how to put a stop to Vicky Triponey? Her fingerprints are all over this media onslaught. She was all over the Freeh Report. She was all over Emmert (perhaps literally) and now she'll be all over ESPN. How can we put a stop to her nonsense? I need ideas.

    We're at war and we're fighting it without allies. Even our own leadership might have strayed beyond incompetence, ineffectiveness and fecklessness and might be actively working for the other side in direct opposition to PSU's best interests. We need to get organized and start formulating and enacting a coherent resistance and I want to contribute my ideas.

  • IMHO, if you make it about Joe it will fall on deaf ears. It would need to be about the University as a whole and the players achievements past & present to get any traction. And even then most people will just blow it off most likely. It's an uphill battle to repair our University's image.

  • You need to let go so that you can move forward. Seriously. It doesn't matter what you say or do, you aren't going to change many people's minds.

    It's better to put our effort into making PSU's future bright than to dwell on the past.

    Joe was lazy at best and helped cover-up a horrible thing at worst. Either way, this is the stuff that makes it look like PSU has a cultural problem. Students flipping over a news van after Joe being fired didn't help...and this won't either

It's funny to see people blast Redd as a coward and saying tough times and situations define a man and his leadership and then support Joe and want to honor him.

I always liked psu and joepa up until all of this happened. Lost all respect for joepa. There is absolutely nothing he did or could have done that would make up for turning a blind eye 2 DOZENS of children being raped PERIOD!!!!! Please don't make me lose what little respect I still have for psu.

  • While I appreciate your gung ho millenial activist mentality, I'm sorry to be the one to inform you that petitions and full page ads in newspapers will not, in fact, change the world. People have made up their minds, and they think Joe Paterno is an evil man.

    What's done is done, folks. No amount of rallies or facebook likes is going to change it. It ain't coming back. Joe's legacy is tarnished for good. It's time we take our lumps. Keep our heads low and get back to work. It's an uphill climb, but it's not insurmountable. But the longer we waste on silly things like petitions and sending emails to power hungry people who don't care what you think, the longer we put off heading down the road to recovery.

    To be honest, no one here gives two sh*ts about what you think about PSU.

    Anyway, I'm all for putting this info in the paper. Mark Emmert was literally talking out of his butt when he said that PSU had lost the balance between football and academics.

    I would be the first to eat crow. I thought @ the beginning of this bs. Joepa reported a situation involving Sandusky and a kid in the showers? Was that not fact? So he knew it happened @ least once?

  • I just think you guys are going to make us look worse than we already are. No one wants to hear about these things right now. Just give it time and then post stats about our grad rates and university rankings. Right now, it will just lead to anger from the public and they will get tired of us trying to force something down their throats.

    We know that PSU is a great university, so let's continue to make it great. We didn't get our academic rankings and accolades from the football program. It will speak for itself in due time.
