Zaire and Foster

  • Lots of kids talk about a package, but few actually work out that way

I'd be very happy with Burns/Hackenberg, Breneman, and maybe a Delando Johnson(Calvert Hall). We have lots of WR depth, although no one with the potential skills as Foster. I agree with the opinions to get the QB highest on your board first and the rest of the class will fall in place. I wouldn't offer Zaire just to get Foster interested...

If Zaire and Foster are a package deal to OSU, I'd much rather have a QB that fits O'Brien's system.

There are always WRs to go around so I'm not worried about Foster being obsessed with Meyer. Get the QB and an OLine and everything else will fall in place, defensively.

That said, it's defensively that I'm most worried about. In football, your defense is the foundation - and the foundation is the DLine. We haven't done a great job of building depth there - and we need to hit that position and CB HARD. If I had to rank my positions of need it would go like this:

    1. DT
    2. QB
    3. CB
    4. G/T
    5. WR
    6. RB

    I don't follow at all.

How can you not have LB on the list when we will only have 6 on the roster next year?

Unless you project most or all of the OL/DL kids from the 2012 class to offense, I don't see DT as a huge need in this class whatsoever.

FWIW, my top three would be:

    1. QB (not numbers, but getting "the" guy)
    2. LB - need three in this class
    3. DB - only 10 scholarship players on the roster after this season

I like those top 3 need areas. The only change I would make is putting DB ahead of LB. We desperately need to get some game changing athletes in the secondary with the new scheme. Looks like 3 is a good number to take at LB but in recent years, with Vandy, i worry little about recruiting that position. I'm confident we sign a good LB class next year.

The premise here is...good QBs and WRs want to play together. However, QB is far more important to land first. If we get a stud QB early, I won't be concerned about WR/TE. Ditto on OL and RB. You start w a QB and the OL...accessorize from there.

Agree. Also, if we get a high profile pro style qb to commit to us, then if foster has any interest, you bring him in, sit him down, and show him highlights of Brady and Welker. Ask him if he'd like to play in a system that makes a qb and wr look like that together.

I'm not worried about WHO we will get, but the fact that we need three means that it is a high priority, IMO.

Of that three, two should be 4/5-star studs. Only Wartman and Kline in the last two classes.

  • ESPN: What were your top needs in this class, and how did you do in addressing them?

Larry Johnson: We got some really great wideouts. The wideout need we met very well. We needed a running back, and we thought we got a great one in Akeel Lynch. We got some secondary players we wanted, more guys, and we got a couple corners there. We would like to have gotten another corner, but we didn't. Defensive line, I thought we met our needs there. Offensive line is probably one of the only places we came up short in getting the numbers we need to have, but you don't want to take a guy late. You might want to roll it over into next year, and that was our mind-set. When we didn't get the few guys we really wanted to get, we didn't want to move anywhere else. We said, 'Let's wait and see next year, we'll get a couple great guys.' We wanted to get four [offensive linemen] and we got two.

O lineman probably tops besides a top notch QB recruit.

Don't disagree with that. My rationale is that IMO the staff will have to put in more effort recruiting the DB position to get a good haul than they will at the LB position. Thus making it a slightly higher priority in my mind but I know that's splitting hairs.

    Old staff = yes.

    New staff = not necessarily.

We won't be playing the soft Cover 3 as a rule any longer.

Sounds like were gunna be playing more man than anything. That attracts top DB's.

    Hopefully that happens.

    Sloepoke20

  • Why?

There's a reason the vast majority of teams in the nation run a predominantly zone-based defense. The last great DC that ran a predominantly man-coverage defense was the DC under Bobby Bowden. Now that he's gone, there's not many teams that do it.

Man is risky, and usually means much, much more big plays.

It attracts good cover corners, but that doesn't mean it results in good defenses.

another problem with man coverage is that you MUST get those CBs who can play it but there really aren't many of them and everybody wants them. And since there are a lot of factors which go into a kid's decision, the defensive scheme can actually be way down on the list of priorities -- he could go somewhere else because there's a Chick-fil-A nearby or something else equally important to him.

  • I'd say the needs are

    1. QB (of course)
2a. DE, very little elite pass rushers on our roster. We need one in the high pressure scheme that roof wants. We want to play fast and pressure the QB. Think Giants D
2b. OT. TRUE OT's. No More Guards playing LT. Donovan Smith is pretty much all we have at this point...
    3. CB, again we need to cover
    4. S, again we need to cover
5a. RB, Lynch is a great one, and Belton may move, but we still need 1-2 in the class.
5b. LB, we are LBU, there are many in our traditional stomping areas, and we will be fine here, but we still need 2-3 in this class.
5c. Brenneman to commit semi-early. He says he wants to take visits all spring, but if we can get him to commit early, it will do wonders for this class.

Need some offensive lineman as well. 4 was the target in 2012 and we ended up with 2.

Ah, forgot! good pick up... I say we take 3 OT. TRUE OT's. Maybe one guard. We have PLENTY of interior linemen... Very few edge protectors... Donovan Smith and not much else.

  • FWIW most on OSU's site consider Zaire a OSU lock, and likely an early committ. Not nearly as clear cut with Foster, he says he's in no hurry. These two as a package deal isn't very realistic, they aren't even from the same state and have no long term or familial bonds.
