PSU gave him a huge extension with no pressure whatsoever. No need to renegotiate. nine or 10 years at whatever he is making here is much better than XXX for three years at Tennessee before he gets canned.

PSU didn't extend the contract as a "gift" to BOB. The 4-year extension was in his contract and automatically kicked in should Penn State be sanctioned by the NCAA. At the time Penn State felt they were not going to be sanctioned, let alone the near-death (worse than death) sentence that Emmert and his goons (read, Erickson and PUS BOT) inflicted upon us.

Ok so if that would all play out like you suspect it would, wouldn't that directly affect Penn State for the next 5-6 years? How would those events translate to a major BCS football program being hindered for close to two decades?

And what if PSU used the buyout money and replaced O'Brien with some big name coach? Don't you think that could help stabilize the program and draw interest from recruits?

What big time coach would touch Penn State with these sanctions, the answer is none.

You seem to underestimate the power of the almighty dollar. If PSU offers enough money, they can bring in a big name.

So ya your answer is wrong.

Posting a link as a source should be mandatory for these types of threads. They don't even include him as a candidate in this article. I don't see anything else of Yahoo Sports about this.

  • Penn State will not spend big money, they let the NCAA sh!t on them. They are not going to pony up the 7-8 million per year that it would take to get a coach to leave a top 40 program to come to Penn State.

Instead of paying a big name they just need to pay the name we have. That's all that needs done, unless BOB is hell-bent on leaving.

Not even a mention in the comments. :)

So, just to recap for anyone, this does not appear to be mentioned anywhere on Yahoo! Sports. I have no clue where the OP is pulling this info from. It certainly doesn't seem to be Yahoo! Sports.

Well. We already have that coach. Pay him now.

Also, most big coaches are still playing. Having to wait till mid-January would be awful.

Fine by me. With that being said, I think this is all a moot point because I highly doubt there is any truth to this rumors. If O'Brien does leave Penn State, IMO it would only be for an NFL head coaching job and that's it.

  • I have a great idea - the next person to bring up an unfounded rumor gets banned for two months. No need to talk about him going anywhere UNLESS HE INTERVIEWS SOMEWHERE. A bunch of you people have no clue and love to jump to conclusions that are quite a bit ridiculous in nature. Still laughing at the Auburn and Tennessee rumors though. It's funny. What next - Nick Saban to Boston College once Spaz gets canned?

To be fair, OP did say 'supposably'. I don't know what that means, but maybe it means 'just kidding' or maybe a 6 year old told him.

  • From cruising their boards...the Tennessee community believes that it is in a battle with Arkansas for Jon Gruden. After I settled down from laughter, the next name on their list was Jimbo Fisher from FSU...who will be heavily pursued by Auburn. After I settled down from a second bout of laughter, the more realistic names included Charlie Strong and Al Golden. There was no mention of BOB whatsoever. It should also be mentioned that they're not using a search firm, so they're likely to go with someone whom already possesses familiarity with the University. So naturally, the Phil Fulmer comeback patrol has also gone into full swing. It's a lot of chaos that has little to do with BOB.

  • We are going to hear this every year, just like Boise State hears it every year. Sanctions or no sanctions do you think BOB would just up and bail? Did you ever think abbé he is happy in State College? I don't see this guy going anywhere until he finishes the job he started. BOB states he is inspired by the kids on the team that stayed and stuck it out. What kind of message do you think that would send to this senior class? BOB is not Kiffen or Fortt or Redd. I think we need to worry when he brings us back from the ashes and makes us a national power once again. Then he is off to NE.

I think Garry Patterson gets a true look at Tennessee. They wanted him after Kiffen kicked UT to the curb for Watts. Kirby Smart might also be an interesting name for Tennessee. It's not UGA, but a very nice first head coaching job and he is the hot commodity of assistants.

  • Funny months ago we were on the other side of this. Rumors are just as entertaining. This week will have a Auburn Sekrah tweet BOB is interviewing in Alabama while he's conducting practice for Wisconsin.

Ah ... the old I saw David Shaw getting off the plane in State College for an interview, meanwhile in Palo Alto, he was leading Stanford into practice for its bowl game.

  • I guess after BOB leaves for Auburn or TN, he can sell his Boalsburg house back to whom he bought it from: Jon Gruden who bought it from Mike Munchak, who bought it from Chris Petersen, who bought it from Urban Meyer, who bought it from ???

  • Do you remember how many names came up as the next PSU coach? Every hot name in america was rumored to have been on campus for an interview or in NY to meet with Joyner for an interview. Rumors are rumors for a reason.

Would I be surprised if those schools reached out to BOB? No. But would I be shocked if he listened? Yes.

Tennessee is a dumpster fire with no hope for success in at least the next 2-3 years.

Auburn is Alabama's little sister, and as long as Saban in T-Town (Tuscaloosa), Aurburn will be going through coaches like wildfire because they will never compete with Bama.

  • If O'Brien were to leave after this season - WHICH I DO NOT BELIEVE WILL HAPPEN - it would be worse than the sanctions as it would completely destroy the 2013 class and all efforts made for the 2014 class. Moving forward, recruits would be EXTREMELY wary of us.

One thing many on this board are TOTALLY forgetting about Tennessee and Auburn coaching searches. Absent John Gruden, it will be important for these coaches to have recruiting ties to the south and have success recruiting high level players in the south. 247 has a list of about 20 possible candidates for Tennessee ranking from Gruden, Smart, Fisher - you name it. Even Pat Fitz is on the list and he isn't going anywhere. The main negative they put on someone with no ties to the south or SEC is questionable ability to recruit high end southern talent to these schools. BOB doesn't have that. Sorry.

Whoever gets these two jobs along with Arkansas will get one free pass year. On year two, you better show significant improvement and be in contention for something. If not, you will be on the hot seat in year three. This is becoming the norm in that league.

It also wouldn't hurt if O'Brien could definitively state that he's not interested in any other coaching jobs instead of letting this rumors continue to stockpile and drive the PSU fanbase nuts.

This endless speculation is getting ridiculous. No one knows for sure what their circumstances are going to be a year from now, but if you read the transcript from OBriens post game press conference, he states that he is the head football, coach at Penn State and that he loves coaching at Penn State. To me that doesn't sound like a guy planning to leave. Even if he said he is definitely staying, that is no guarantee. Nick Saban said he wasn't leaving Miami, then did.
