With all this talk about...

  • The coaching staff is a hot topic right now on a few threads. So, I want to ask all of you, 1. Who would you LIKE to see as the next head coach at PSU, who will be the right fit for the university , 2. Who do you honestly THINK it will be?
The thing that scares me most, is that we hire from within, and nothing changes. Not to discredit a Tom Bradley or LJ Sr, but I think if this program is to move, not just forward, but into the modern era, we HAVE to go outside this program to find the right guy. So, lets hear it....

  • I think we need a young coach who can bring some 21st century to the offense. I have had chris pederson in mind for a while. He turned a mediocre Boise St. team into a real BCS contender, all with leftover recruits. Yeah their schedule is always soft, but just imagine what he could do with a B10 team and higher caliber recruiting. That's who i would like to see us go after.

I really firmly believe that it will be an in house selection though. I see Bradley getting the job, LJ moves up to DC, not quite sure if Jay moves up to OC. Joe has been loyal for years and years and i think it has worn off on everyone at PSU to include Curley.

I do not want to see an in house selection either, but i fear it is inevitable.

IMO, your fear is unfounded. I believe it is far more likely that they look for a Penn State guy not currently in the program.

  • My only concern with Chris Petersen is he is a West coast guy and does not have recruiting connection on the East coast.

  • If I provided names it would just be a flavor of the year pick as I'm not an expert on HC's. I do know that strategically we don't have what it takes and self limit ourselves in many areas. So, staying in house probably perpetuates the situation. But that is not giving Bradley his fair shake. If he commits to revamping the staff and offensive and defensive philosophy I'd consider giving him a shot. If not, find a spot in the AD for him and find someone outside the program that can commit to our values without being stuck with our self imposed handicaps eg. excess loyalty for under performance, regional recruiting, half the staff sitting in SC, generally the same old offensive game plans, no press coverage, etc..

Joe was allowed to bring in one new coach to replace his position. I'd tell any new coach that they were allowed to KEEP ONE current coach and let them make a logical, statistically accurate and reasoned argument if they wanted to keep more. I know we would lose some good people with this scenario but that is inevitable with change. If we are going to change, let's change, not recycle a tired old retread.

  • My choices, in no particular order

Peterson, Love the aggressive play to win playcalling/gameplanning and the way he gets his kids to show up in big games.

    Ferentz, we all know why

    Fitzgerald, a young Joe Paterno

harbough, doing it the right way and a good coach

  • Unfortunatley, I fully believe it will be an in house hire. I fully believe that is a bad thing and that we can expect more of the same. I want a clean break from Paterno. I don't think any of our assistants have the fire or drive needed to be a HC. If they did, they wouldn't have stuck around for as long as they have as assistants IMO. They also seem to be yes men and I do not want a yes man as the next HC.

Read mine too but just for fun i will give a wish list.

    1. Harbaugh (Stan) Too much success to leave?
    2. Frenetz (Iowa) too Loyal?
    3. Bradley (PSU) Toooo Loyal?
    4. Peterson (Boise State) To western?
    5. Fitzgerlad? (NW) hard to get him away from his ala mater

Maybe put Golden as a tie for #3

I've heard ferentz would leave Iowa in a heartbeat for PSU.

  • Ferentz just signed a major extension with $2.5 mil/yr guaranteed. He's not going anywhere.

    My list:

    - Harbaugh
    - Golden
    - Bradley
    - Mike Stoops

I don't think Petersen comes here. I think he's a fantastic coach, but I just don't see a fit there. I also don't think Fitzgerald comes here...too attached to NW.

Harbaugh is not a great defensive coach, and may be setting his sights on the NFL. However, he's a stud national recruiter, great developer of QB's, and he runs an academically focused program.

Both Bradley and Golden are great defensive minds with strong ties to PSU and recruiting connections to the region. However, both would necessitate a stud O-Coordinator and quickly increased national profile for recruiting purposes.

I also like Stoops a lot. He's an intense guy, gets a lot out of his players, plays aggressive schemes on both sides of the ball, and recruits really well considering the status of his program. He also has extremely strong recruiting ties to the area...particularly Ohio. I think both he and Harbaugh would have a shot to break down the tOSU wall around the state...not so sure about Golden/Bradley with that challenge.

Bradley and Golden could return us to tier 2 status with very strong regional recruiting. A higher profile guy like Harbaugh or Stoops would make us nationally relevant again. I think the BOT stays conservative and goes with options 1 or 2.

As serious as I am about wanting Joe Paterno to retire as of 1995.

  • I've heard Ferentz will leave Iowa for 2 jobs, PSU being one. It all would hinge on being able to get the buyout worked out.

  • I feel like frenetz is stuck in Iowa especially if they go BCS this year. However mike stoops is a very interesting choice. The more I think about it the more i like stoops and harbaugh, they have both recruited players away from psu

  • I'm all for Harbaugh as he is the hot coach right now, but is everyone cool with a Michigan guy leading us out of the tunnel?

One thing he does have going for him is that he seems to hate Michigan right now.

I personally don't want Stoops (Oklahoma head coach). I'm just not comfortable with him @ PSU.

The Stoops they are refering to is Bob Stoops (Oklahoma HC) brother, Mike (Arizona HC).

Thanks Pete ... that being the case I'm feeling lukewarm to that idea. I guess if you can recruit you can probably do it anywhere, but I like the fact that Harbaugh has pulled gets off the east coast, Ferentz is a local boy, Golden is @ Temple ... all the others ... meh.

Yeah, I don't know much about Mike Stoops one way or the other so, who knows. I'm not on the Golden bandwagon (as you already know) that others are. maybe he is the real deal and would be good, I'm just not sold yet. I like Harbough, Peterson, Fitzgerald, Edsal and a few others, but, at this point I am ABP, Anbody But Paterno.

  • I'd love Harbaugh #1, Ferentz #2, Golden #3.

I really think it is going to be an outside guy, hence, the lack of announcing a succession plan. I think Bradley goes elsewhere when that happens. I'd like to retain LJ and defensive coordinator...

    PSUGrad91

  • I like...

    1. Pat Fitzgerald - Young, seems like he loves the college game, already recruits at a tough academic school, good coach as well that will take chances.
    2. Kirk Ferentz - One of the smartest coaches around, knows the games, very good defense, awesome O-Lines. Would have liked to see slightly better recruiting, but I understand it is Iowa. I have no doubt he could recruit veyr well at PSU.
    3. Jim Harbaugh - Very good coach, awesome recruiter...don't think he would be at PSU for a long time though. NFL will be calling him soon.
    4. Al Golden - Young, PSU is dream job, very good recruiter, etc.
    5. Tom Bradley - Already stated quite a few times

I wouldn't be opposed to Mike Stoops, though. Edsal too.

First two would be ecstatic with...second two with be very happy with. Bradley would change some things, recruit very well, but at the same time...has been molded by Joe Pa so some of those things would be instilled in him. Not sure though. Just kind of want to go outside the program, especially if those 4 others are interested.

LJ is the least likely guy to stay around, regardless of who succeeds Paterno. I don't think he'd stay under Bradley either.

  • You guys have been too long away from PSU or dont realize the politics of Old State. LJ or another minority will be the new head coach, Spanier wont care who it is so long as they get paid less than 2 Mil and he's a minority. That means LJ.
