Wisconsin Coaching Search

  • Al Golden declined the job/bowed out/was not offered.... not sure why is is not, but he is not the man.

Riley is saying he is not interested.

Jag's assitant is possible, perhaps likely.

Barry kicked around idea on staying full time. I could see that only if he strikes out with other guys. And his staff would have been mostly the old staff, but they are all bolting.

I really hope they get a mediocre head coach. We don't need a stronger Wisconsin in the division. Personally I would be pleased if it was Barry. He was always a respectful and kind guy, IMO. And while I think he would coach well, I don't see recruits falling over him to go to Wisconsin like we might lose recruits to Urban.

Sounds like it's time for Barry to start work on the wording of a Chyrst-to-Wisconsin press release. Will be interesting to see him tiptoe around his previous statements that it was too soon to hire Paul.

  • It looks like Mel Tucker might be the choice. Some of the chatter on their board seems to be leaning that way.

  • I hope they hire a great coach. We want the conference to be as good as possible. I'd rather us have to step our game up to beat the best rather than play a bunch of mediocre teams. The better the B1G the more high profile games we have... The better.

I dont agree. I hear this a lot and understand the reasoning, but I hope the B1G sucks. The more the B1G sucks the better the chance we will have a better record through these BS sanction years. Its not like the B1G had our back... so the last thing I want is Purdue and the likes growing stronger and making it harder for Penn State to be successful.

Dont get me wrong. Before these sanctions I cheered for B1G teams in bowls etc and completely agreed with wanting the B1G as stong as possible. But that seems like 500 years ago.

Personally, Wisconsin getting thrashed in the Rose Bowl sounds good along with the beat down I expect to give Nebraska... I happily could see the B1G losing every bowl this year. And that makes me happy happy happy.

Your rationale doesn't work at all. You should want psu to manage decent records during the sanctions because we developed players and stepped our game up, not because the B1G sucks and we beat a bunch of terrible teams. Kids want to play in big games against big opponents... This is why they come to the B1G. The second that this stops more kids from our area will head to the sec, the quality of football will drop, less people will go see games, and psu football will never be the same.

And if the answer is more high profile television games... well the B1G sucked this year and that didnt seem to stop us at all.

The B1G is the B1G. Its not like we're the Big East or something. People want to watch Penn State play football so its going to be readily available regardless of if the B1G sucks or not.

Did you see what our average rating was this year? It wasn't good at all. We had like the 27th best average rating.

Look. I'm dealing with the situation that PSU football is in and attempting to look at it through the most selfish blue lenses possible.

BOB is gonna develop players whether Wisconsin blows or not. Kids want to play in front of 100,000 people in Beaver Stadium and the better record we have the better chance we have of that happening. I actually think the stronger the B1G is, the worse record PSU has, and the worse crowds we will see.

Success is key for Penn State right now.

Kids are coming to PSU right now because they either love Penn State, or they love Bill Obrien and what he can do for them. A kid like Hack isnt going to NOT make the pros because Wisconsin hired a crappy coach and now they blow.

The SEC basically gets what it wants the way it is. Wisconsin getting a good coach aint gonna change that in the slightest.

  • Alvarez made a huge mistake by limiting himself on Chyrst. Being politically correct and doing what's right for a program can be two completely different things.

  • And trust me I know how bitter this comes off because I feel that bitter about the situation and I dont give a crap. Yeah I'm petty. So what.

Every year during the sanctions that we have an upper teir team in the B1G... it will jack up the bowls for the B1G. It will send 7-5 teams to the Rose Bowl and I will laugh at Emmert and Delaney. Its a small victory... but for a bunch of kids and people that did actually nothing wrong... I'll take the ones I can get.

The rest of you guys can be politically correct enough for me. I'm the old guy waving my cane around.

Ok, I'm done venting and thread jacking.

I've been scoping the Wisconsin board and reading what I can for the past couple weeks and everyone over there keeps saying they HAD to wait 14 day to hire a new coach. WTF does that mean.? Something about a law where if a university job is posted they have to wait 2 weeks to fill it. I call BS on that but does anyone have any insight on if it's true and why? That said I think Mel Tucker would be a Wisconsin fit but not necessarily a tremendous hire, but I don't think Chyrst would have been either.

  • I honestly don't get the people who want a division/conference rival to hire a good coach and get stronger. That's like me saying I'm a Giants fan, so I hope the Eagles hire Jon Gruden instead of Norv Turner. By the time we are postseason eligible again, there will be a playoff. If we get to that level, the strength of Wisconsin's coach shouldn't be a determining factor.

Since football coaches are state employees, they fall under the same laws as other positions. Many states and the federal government require non-appointed jobs to be posted to the public for a select time frame. It is suppose to spot patronage and political favors.

I don't mind UM at tO$U. It's beneficial to have at least one other division foe to be strong. Will keep us sharp, force us to keep up, and provide motivation. It's a great help to have someone push you to improve.

But I have no desire to see UW join them. It makes no sense. I'm starting to think we will very much keep up with this conference during probation.... with UM & OSU being the only programs definitely a step ahead of PSU. NU, MSU & UW are not going to run away from us.

With the way its going, if they don't get this guy from the Jags or the NDSU coach, I wouldn't be shocked to see BA come back to Chryst.

That's a stupid rule. I know it has it's place in certain situations but If Beleima left to take an NFL Job in late January they wouldn't have two weeks to spare before signing day. In this situation I think it's a cop out. But I'm probably wrong.
