  • Well...as crushing as the Nebraska loss is right now (we could have locked in a championship game appearance with a win), what's done is done.

How do we beat Wisconsin? I'll be honest...I think Wisconsin is a very good team. And from what I saw today, I don't think we match up very well against their offense. They've got a power running game and better OL prospects than we've ever seen from them (yes, ever). OSU did very well running against us today. I trust PSU to make a game of it, but I'm not sure we can stop Ball and co.

I actually don't think Wilson is that athletic, especially compared to most of the guys we've played recently (Miller, Martinez, Persa). He's a good runner, but I have not been terribly impressed by him. Even so...we absolutely need to contain him in the pocket. From the little I've seen, he's dangerous when throwing outside of the pocket.

Again, I haven't seen a whole lot of Wisconsin, but my impression is that their defense is weak on the edges. Getting Redd and Green outside might give us an effective offense and hopefully keep theirs off the field.

    What do you guys think?

  • Still, Hill and Carson. If those 3 play well, we will shut down their run.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

We handle wisconsin power runners well. We struggle more with the shifty guys like Miller today.

Illinois had to give Wisconsin that game today, was not overly impressed. Granted, not going to be easy going to their house to win. But they also have to shut down our offense now.

  • Wilson is BY FAR the best QB we will have faced all year. He is as athletic as the guys you mentioned but can throw from the pocket and on the run. I just looked it up, he is #1 in passing efficiency in the country, not the Big 10. He only has 3 INT's all year.

  • does anyone else think, this is a game where we have to have success with passing like with northwestern? ohio state was shocked by the wild cat today it seemed.

The fact that OSU has that many ground yards should be a major cause for concern. Wisky's ground game is alot better and God knows Wilson is alot better than Miller right now.

They did, but how many of those yards came in traditional "running" sets. I think Herron had about 20 yards rushing at one point into the second half. Most of his yards came late in the game. Russell Wilson ran for -6 yards against an Illinois defense that is similar to ours across the board (though I'd say ours is a touch stronger). Ball is the worrisome one on the ground to me. I don't think Wisconsin scores 28 even on this defense. It will be up to our offense to score on their D. Can they do it? I think so, but it's by no means a certainty.

I'm sure he's a good passer. I'm just saying that what I see is not as athletic a guy as people seem to think he is. When I watched him, he looked fairly slow compared to a lot of these other QB's. Not saying he runs like Peyton Manning, but I definitely didn't see a guy who could destroy us with his legs. And I don't doubt he's doing well passing the ball. He's not bad at it, he's got decent receivers and he's got a dominant running game to help him out. Play-action has been deadly for Wisconsin.

  • My opinion of Wilson:
-Good, not great athlete. Not terribly fast, but knows when to pull it down and run the ball.
-Good, not great arm. I haven't watched many games, but the game I did watch he didn't flash a Flacco-type arm.
    -VERY, VERY high football IQ.
    -Unreal pocket awareness.
-Accurate on the run, even more accurate in the pocket.

IMO, he's been so outrageously successful because of Wisconsin's running game and the fact that he makes great decisions as to when to pull it down. Good, but not great athlete in general. Just good at every aspect of college quarterbacking, very balanced.

That being said, its extremely difficult to defend a smart QB, even harder when that smart QB has both a good arm and good feet. We need to shut Ball down IMO, Hill and Still need to take away that playaction if we are to have any chance whatsoever to stop that offense.

  • I would say regardless of the outcome of the game we should be extremely proud of these kids. Before this season started we didn't even see ourselves winning 8 games, then this scandal hit, and still...we now have 9. This team has far outperformed what I saw it achieving, and even if they lose this Saturday, my head will be held high.
