Will the Loss of Dorian Johnson Start a Domino Effect?

  • white_out said...

the road map to recruiting will be as follows (if my understanding is correct):

Bowl ban: 2012-2015 (Bowl season 2013-2016)

February 2013: It'll be a tough crop IMO. Holding onto the kids we have will be tough. Very important to get numbers though (15 limit). They will be on the roster 2013-2016 for non redshirted kids. 2017 for red-shirted kids. Non redshirts get no bowls, redshirted kids 1 bowl, if eligible.

February 2014: Another tough year, 15 limit. Very important to get all 15 kids on the line. 2014-2017 for non redshirts; 2018 for redshirts. Non redshirted kids able to play in 1 bowl (Redshirted kids will play in 2 bowls, if eligible)

February 2015: IMO, this is where things will start picking up. 15 limit. Kids will be on roster 2015-2018 for non redshirts, 2019 for redshirts. Non redshirts will have a chance for 2 bowls, redshirts 3 bowls. I suspect this is where we'll see opportunity for better recruiting.

February 2016: Still under the 15 scholarship rule, 65 scholarship roster. Kids will be on roster from 2016-2019 for non redshirts, 2020 for redshirts. Non redshirts will have a chance at 3 bowls, redshirts 4 bowls. Should be a solid class.

Keep in mind the 65 schollie roster goes from 2014-2017, so while the 15 scholarship limit ends with the kids who sign in Feb 2016, we're still under a 20 scholarshiip penalty until February 2018, then we'll have a full slate of 25 scholarships to hand out, and probably will be able to oversign to 28 scholarships.

The limit of 15 starts with the signed class in feb 2014.

25 limit for this year (signing feb 2013)

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • No offense but if you didn't see Bradshaw and Johnson decommiting then you haven't been paying attention. Issah's next. Hack, AB, Sickels, Nelson and Mahon aren't going anywhere else, even if they're the only five in this class. While this is all just my opinion I feel strongly about it. We'll see I guess.

Following psu recruiting for the next 5 years is just going to lead to heart ache. I still can't believe what those in power at psu have done to this program. It may never recover.

I would'nt go that far, but this yr. and maybe next yr. is going to be hard to recruit top talent here to PSU,if these top recruits want to go somewhere else let them go it's there loss, they are not looking at the big picutre, and thats is the NFL,we have the best coaches to get them there, and you would be a fool not to see that.

Are you sure about that? Most internet sources are saying its the 2013 class.

and White_out the guys that sign February 2013 would have 1 bowl game without redshirting, its the new freshmen that just came in who won't see a bowl game w/o redshirting.

  • Just chiming in with an outsiders POV.. I sincerely hope that Hack sticks with you guys. I know he re-confirmed his commitment and whatnot but there is obviously a lot of time for that to change, and I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that. He is going to be a great college QB and IMO is the only piece that can keep you guys at a competitive level during the sanctions. As Peyton showed in Indy, a great QB can cover up a number of deficiencies in an offense. If Hack pans out the way I (and, like, all the recruiting services) expect him to, he has the potential to take some 3* WR recruits and make them household names. He will also draw some higher quality recruits to your program who otherwise wouldn't be, yada yada yada.

Point is, I do not want you guys to be a cakewalk. I want to see how successful Hack can be under BoB's offense, and I want you guys to be a threat every saturday.

I'm very afraid that the loss of Dorian Johnson will have an effect on guys like Hack, AB and others. This was one kid I felt we couldn't afford to lose.

    Thoughts?

Pretty sure, my source was our very own Andrew dzurita from twitter.

    D. Smith is a potential 1st round pick in a few years, and we have some good looking prospects still around. Both lines are places where transfers did not hurt us that bad (not sure about Nowicki's potential) yet.

  • It is my understanding in reviewing the language from the NCAA that the scholarship limit goes into effect with the 2013 class.

"Four-year reduction of grants-in-aid. For a period of four years commencing with the 2013-2014 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 academic year, the NCAA imposes a limit of 15 initial grants-in-aid (from a maximum of 25 allowed) and for a period of four years commencing with the 2014-2015 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2017-2018 academic year a limit of 65 total grants-in-aid (from a maximum of 85 allowed) for football during each of those specified years. In the event the total number of grants-in-aid drops below 65, the University may award grants-in-aid to non-scholarship student-athletes who have been members of the football program as allowed under Bylaw 15.5.6.3.6."

The 2013-2014 academic year represents AB's class. So this coming class' limit would be 15.

Additionally, the bowl ban begins at the end of this season and expires when AB (if not redshirted) is a senior.

"Four-year postseason ban. The NCAA imposes a four-year postseason ban on participation in postseason play in the sport of football, beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2015-2016 academic year. Therefore, the University's football team shall end its 2012 season and each season through 2015 with the playing if its last regularly scheduled, in-season contest and shall not be eligible to participate in any postseason competition, including a conference championship, any bowl game, or any postseason playoff competition."

I'm the opposite. I think linemen are top priority in college ball. And although they are the toughest position to predict from high school to college(see your example of Shrive), you can never have enough quality ones on your team.

This is so true. People started to write Stanford off after Luck left, but after the haul they brought in on the O-Line, they are far from off the radar. And plus, right after Josh Garnett committed, BArry Sanders Jr committed. The O-Line classes put together at Michigan and Notre Dame in this class are along the same lines. Opening holes and protecting the QB are equally if not more important than those running through those holes or standing in the pocket of them. If forced to chose, I'll take a 5-star O-LIneman over a 5-Star RB anyday.

  • I hate to see see your program going through these rough times. I am a buckeyes fan but have always loved Joe Pa and the type of program he ran. In my book you guys still have the cleanist programs ever and I don't think a sick man like Sandusky has any barring on Joe Pa and Penn State Pride. Penn State will rise and make the Big Ten whole once again! If I wasn't wearing scarlet and grey on saturdays id have no problems wearing the Blue and white of THEE STATE COLLEGE

  • Recruiting scholarship limit is in effect for Class of 2013. It impacts those who start to receive aid for 2013-14 Academic year, hence the staff's attempts to tack on late 2012 guys and EE's.

Cue the ESPN scroll & headline... "5 Star Recruit Dorian Johnson DE-COMMITS from Penn State!", with no mention of Brandon Bell reaffirming his commitment today.

Never expected D.J. to stick. What's ironic is if he goes to Pitt, he'll be playing in front of less fans and no guarantee he'll go bowling there either.

Sadly I feel like this kid ends up in Columbus. Meyer will sell him and his family some bullshit about "a family environment" or "high academics".

And that is EXACTLY what I just read on espn... Don't know why I even look on that page... You would think I would have learned by now.

    banghead

Not one word about Brandon Bell. At least as I skimmed over it... Didn't feel like reading it all...
