Will the Loss of Dorian Johnson Start a Domino Effect?

  • Johnson was a flakey commit before the sanctions.

All of you panicking should know better and have expected this.

    IDK bono,
I didn't see it that way at all. I thought he really fell in love with the school, and all he needed to do was convince his family that we were the right fit for him both on and off the field.

I'm the opposite. I think linemen are top priority in college ball. And although they are the toughest position to predict from high school to college(see your example of Shrive), you can never have enough quality ones on your team.

Homer....definitely agree....this is where the sanctions are really going to hurt...normally it takes at least 2 years to develop (strength; technique) an O lineman who you can even consider playing...the lack of depth and potential inability to sign the highest caliber prospects means our O line is going to be very thin starting around 2014 and will likely take another 4 years after that to get back to a normal level...unless we get real lucky in spotting under-appreciated talent and developing it...

  • the road map to recruiting will be as follows (if my understanding is correct):

Bowl ban: 2012-2015 (Bowl season 2013-2016)

February 2013: It'll be a tough crop IMO. Holding onto the kids we have will be tough. Very important to get numbers though (15 limit). They will be on the roster 2013-2016 for non redshirted kids. 2017 for red-shirted kids. Non redshirts get no bowls, redshirted kids 1 bowl, if eligible.

February 2014: Another tough year, 15 limit. Very important to get all 15 kids on the line. 2014-2017 for non redshirts; 2018 for redshirts. Non redshirted kids able to play in 1 bowl (Redshirted kids will play in 2 bowls, if eligible)

February 2015: IMO, this is where things will start picking up. 15 limit. Kids will be on roster 2015-2018 for non redshirts, 2019 for redshirts. Non redshirts will have a chance for 2 bowls, redshirts 3 bowls. I suspect this is where we'll see opportunity for better recruiting.

February 2016: Still under the 15 scholarship rule, 65 scholarship roster. Kids will be on roster from 2016-2019 for non redshirts, 2020 for redshirts. Non redshirts will have a chance at 3 bowls, redshirts 4 bowls. Should be a solid class.

Keep in mind the 65 schollie roster goes from 2014-2017, so while the 15 scholarship limit ends with the kids who sign in Feb 2016, we're still under a 20 scholarshiip penalty until February 2018, then we'll have a full slate of 25 scholarships to hand out, and probably will be able to oversign to 28 scholarships.

  • Correct me if wrong but if the bowl ban starts this year, the redshirted guys from Feb. 2013 class will get two bowls?

  • Cue the ESPN scroll & headline... "5 Star Recruit Dorian Johnson DE-COMMITS from Penn State!", with no mention of Brandon Bell reaffirming his commitment today.

Never expected D.J. to stick. What's ironic is if he goes to Pitt, he'll be playing in front of less fans and no guarantee he'll go bowling there either.

Sadly I feel like this kid ends up in Columbus. Meyer will sell him and his family some bullshit about "a family environment" or "high academics".

    ^This. Couldn't agree more.

I'm usually optimistic with these things, but I just can't be with this one. DJ was No. 1 on my personal big board. This blows. I don't think it will start a domino effect, probably Issah and that's it. But I hate to lose such a quality o-line commit. Not sure if PSU is completely off his board or if he just opened things up again. Hopefully the latter and BOB can show him everything he committed for is still very much in place.

O-line commits are VERY important. I'm thoroughly convinced in any level of football the team with the better o-line will win. Hack won't be able to do much of anything if he's running for his life every play.

  • Finishing recruiting in 2013 will be difficult. The class will need to be filled with low 3 stars and 2 star recruits. Gotta hope to hang on to 8 or so and add a kid or two tat were already on the radar like Benton and Lemelle. The rest of the class will fill up with kids like Clay ad a couple JUCOs. 2014 will be the weakest class overall in my opinion. I think we may see oe or two four stars but TE rest of the class will fill with 3 star recruits. Gotta find some kids they can develop because these kids will need to play. I'm thinking we'll see a lot of kids on the level of Cothran and Nelson. Upside but in need of work. 2015 will be a pretty strong class because these kids only miss one bowl game and early playing time will be readily available.

Some are just way to dramatic. The only thing that could kill this program would be a ton of kids walking away after this season. If most stick then there's definitely a nice core of young players on this team with 3-4 years of eligibility remaining. And if Hack sticks by far the most important position in college football is filled with a potential star. Finally, the staff will find 8-10 high quality walkons given the huge opportunity to play at PSU.

  • No Offense to the OP. But Dorian Johnson is a result of the desertion and not a cause. Si Redd started the desertion en masse, and not DJ. I'm just hoping the bleeding stops already. fingergun

Lol @ Pitt. No better chance of making a bowl game than PSU. Idk about OSU, I thought he was also high on WVU... which is bogus because he said throughout his recruitment that getting a top-notch education was a high priority and "WVU" and "top-notch academics" don't really belong in the same sentence.

Yah, this could dictate BOB "adjusting to the personnel" and installing the run-and-shoot or some other quick passing scheme (like Houston) in the coming years.

  • I am so sad right now...that's my thoughts....

but we still got nelson, we have donovan for 4 years straight at left tackle, mahon, 3 yrs of mangiro (possibly 4 if he ends up winning a job this year), dieffenbach (sp)...i really wish that dorian was still on board, but, call me an optimist, I am not worried about him...

related question...are we still in the picture or is writing us off completely?
