Why is PSU targeting academic school coaches?

  • So most of the names coming up are all linked to high end academic programs. Guys like Tim Murphy(Harvard), Greg Roman(Former Stanford OC), Bill O'Brian(Former Duke OC), David Shaw (Stanford)... Why is this the case? I know they current Administration wants to emphasis Academics but Stanford(a much higher Academic University) hired a guy, Jim Harbaugh, that went to Michigan and coached at San Diego. This really frustrates me. I think PSU is worrying more about being applauded for hiring an academic guy then hiring an elite football coach. Does this frustrate anyone else?

  • Because all these guys are ONLY rumors and nothing more. I don't believe PSU has targeted any of these guys, outside of MAYBE Shaw.

    The only thing connecting Murphy is that he expressed interest early on. No reported interest from PSU. Roman and O'Brien have simply been rumors of the day. Shaw was a rumor at one point.

    There has been zero legitimate corroboration that these guys are actual candidates from PSU's point of view.

    Do we know PSU is targeting all of these guys? Agents of Assistant NFL coaches are taking liberties right now involving PSU's search. They are throwing their names out there to the media, knowing PSU won't come back and say anything. Who really knows who PSU has targeted.

    Some of, ahem, most of the media is FOS. Adam Shefter is usually pretty credible though

    The thing is, when this is all over, all we will have is the name and face of the head coach and NOT the names of the finalists or targets.

  • My point is it seems like all the names tied to this job weather they're rumors or not seem to be "academic" types. What other elite job in the country would some of these names be tied too, rightly or wrongly.

    Only problem is that O'Brien's agent said that there has been no contact or negotiations between him and PSU..
