Why has the big ten struggled so much in bcs bowl games?

  • Why is it that the big ten has struggled in the mnc championship game? I was thinking about this when I was watching the 2006 michigan @ Ohio state game. Here you have two teams that were #1 and #2; both were viewed as almost unbeatable in the media. And then they both get absolutely blown out in their bowl games. Ohio state were blown out in pretty much all of their bcs bowl games throughout the 00s, where in many cases they were #1 in the country before the game. The same can be said about psu in the rose bowl. Why is it that the big ten seems to get harrased in these big bowl games? Is it because Of the oversigning rule? The gap between the big ten and other conferences weren't even noticeable throughout the 90s and early 00s so whats the deal? Does that mean that the big ten overrated? Is there a lack of talent in big ten recruiting? Is the gap closing between the sec and the big ten? I look at michigan and ohio states recruiting classes and a large part of there classes are filled with 4 and 5 stars from the midwest. It almost looks as if the big ten is filled with these talented players yet when these players have faced the teams from down south that are 4 and 5 stars they get embarrassed. What do you guys think of all of this?

  • The Big10 had an absolutely brutal BCS bowl schedule from 2007-2009. 2010-2011 the B1G went 3-1, against run of the mill BCS teams, but the reputation for BCS futility was forged the previous 3 years when the B1G went 0-6. Their six opponents

2007: Florida and USC. Florida won the title, and if it wasn't for the typical Pete Carroll USC screwup, USC would have been playing OSU for that title. USC probably was the most talented team in the country and no one would have been favored against them except maybe OSU.

2008: LSU and USC. LSU was the best team by a country mile but injuries lead to their 2 losses. Same story with USC. They were the only team that could compete with a healthy LSU but through this era they kept stepping on their crank against a crap PAC10 team or 2 only to play up their full potential decimating a B1G team in the Rose Bowl. This year it was Illinois' turn to match Rob Zook's talent against the Trojans. Yikes.

2009: Texas and USC. This was the Texas team that everyone thought "deserved" to play in the BCS champion game b/c they beat Oklahoma and finished with one loss. Just like 05, OSU lost by the narrowest of margins to the longhorns. Incidently, if OSU had pulled of an early season game against those Vince Young lead 05 'horns, PSU would have played USC for the championship. USC would have run the table and 3 teams would have finished with 1 loss. PSU who had beaten OSU, OSU who WOULD have beaten Texas, and Texas. The other team in 2009 was of course another almost NFL USC squad who took advantage of a few timely mistakes to slap Penn State around a bit. The mantra after that game was that the USC defense let up and let D Clark and company put up some 2nd half points which is why that game was respectible. However, going into that game, pundits were talking about USC being the best defense in college football ever. With that talk going on, I don't think they gave PSU one free yard and in the 2nd half, Penn State showed what kind of game it COULD have been if the mistakes hadn't put them in a big 1st half hole. All the best defense ever talk promptly ended after that game.

Because f*ck Ohio State that's why...

Actually thefonz nailed it on the head. They just played some downright beastly teams. USC's defense that played against us in the Rose Bowl was stacked. All 3 linebackers are NFL starters, 2 of them are pro bowlers, 1 of them juiced and never got caught.

Mark Sanchez carved up our secondary (thanks to the old staff's refusal to use anything but the cover 3). Not to mention we had a lot of blunders out of the gate.

I remember going to the blue white game before that season and thinking the entire team looked great except our secondary. USC perfectly exploited our weakness. They were just a great team.

What's Ohio State's record in BCS games?

Honestly couldn't tell ya. I know they won the NC in 2002, lost like 2 NC's in a row against Florida and LSU, and then vacated that one BCS win... Beyond that I don't know an exact number for BCS bowls. Could probably look it up but I'm too lazy to right now. I know for total bowl games they have a losing record.

  • Because most B1G teams are overrated.

We play a more traditional type of football in the B1G, both offensively and defensively, and it's easier to prepare for than the 3-4 speed blitzes of the SEC or Big 12.

Easiest answer is they've been overrated. B1G champs haven't been as good as other conference champs.

  • Great post thefonz. I would also add that until 2010, the Big Ten season ended the weekend before Thanksgiving while other conferences played into the first weekend of Decemeber. Two extra weeks of rust is significant.

In 2010, a bye week was added to push the schedule to Thanksgiving weekend, and in 2011, the B1G finally added a conference championship game.

OSU is 5-3 in BCS games not including the Sugar Bowl vs Arkansas, 20-23 all-time in bowl games.

  • Anyone also consider the coaching disparagement? Saban, miles, and Meyer are all probably better head coaches than the big tens best during that time in tressel.. Then you've got richt, spurrier, Petrino, etc. Next best in the big ten were beliema, ferentz, and joe..
