Who's vetting the assistants?

  • Does anyone else find this strange? A search committee spends 2 months on due diligence and background checking every possible HC candidate under the veil of total secrecy. Then when BOB is officially hired, he puts together a complete staff of 9 coaches of his own choosing in 2-3 days. Did the search committee's job end when they hired BOB? They didn't know who he was going to choose before hand...Being that Sandusky was an assistant (as well as Bernie Fine), the PSU and the BOT looks a bit hypocritical here. It takes more than a few days to vett a guy, let alone 7 guys we had no prior knowledge on (assuming LJ and Van were already cleared).

    hoping someone asks this at the alumni meetings this week....

    A background check (including criminal and credit history) can be done within 24 hours if you are willing to pay a little extra. Also, I am sure each had to provide several character witnesses that someone in HR contacted. BOB probably had these guys ready for clearances to be checked last Friday.

    ...and if you're not down with that, then I got 2 words for ya.."suck it!!"

    Exactly. You can cover yourself legally when they go to sign the paperwork. You make it clear a full background will be done and the hire is temporary until the background check is completed. If they have nothing to hide, they don't blink.

  • do you really think the 2 months went towards background checking? joyner had a top candidate, adn when that fell through, he fell back on his plan b.. Let's just be grateful they hired a coach that knows how to put together a staff quickly while also having the ability to handle PR, recruiting and coaching/preparing a playoff team..

  • I'd be willing to bet each coach that interviewed provided a preliminary list of people they'd look at for their coaching staff.

  • They hired O'Brien to be the head coach. I assume they then leave it to him to pick and check out the assistants.

  • In most cases you as a prospective employee to a school district or University, have to have this done before you apply for any position. You also are required to have this updated on a scheduled basis. I have a son that is in education and at his expense he must have both a STATE and FEDERAL background check done and ready to supply to any potential school that we applies too.

    I would guess that this was in their hands before they ever applied or were asked.

  • I'm just thinking in light of the various scandals, it's been shown the bad apple on the tree and not the man at the top that can bring the house down. Those 2 months went into to talking with HC candidates at length on various subjects and getting to know each one candidly and personally, along with talking to many outside references about character traits. I'm sure BOB spoke then about various possible assistants, but there was no guarantee at that time any of them would have joined. I'm thinking not one member of the committee had talked to any of the newly hired assistants in advance. A background check can be done quickly, but you need to talk to these people in person to see if their character fits with what PSU is trying to mold to.

    This is something you have the luxury of time to do if you make the HC hire in December. It's a rush job now.
    Just seems like a major omission in the process to me.

    I vetted them and they all got their shots and got wormed. All noses are cool and wet, so we are ready to go....
