Who steps up?

To fill Massaro's shoes this season. Big loss, but thats football and someone needs to step up.
Candidates:
Lattimore- Last year and maybe he finally can have a successful season.
Stanley- Disappointing season last year off and on the field... but can he be an everyday DE?
CJ- Up'd his weight by 20 lbs... time for him to come out. Certainly has the athletic ability as well as extremely long arms...maybe this is the year.
Baubitz- He's more of a SDE, but who knows. Interesting to see how practice is going so far.
Also, will either Oakman, Zettel or Barnes make the 3 deep now? Im sure we will see one on the field this year. Im going with Zettel or Barnes.

Not expecting much out of Lattimore at all. Stanley is a dow jonser - up and down. I'm expecting for someone like Olyanian to step up. I think he can be special. I just don't see guys like Oakman or Zettel making much of an impact as true frosh to help offset the loss of Massaro. JMO

Never said a frosh will offset the loss of Pete, im almost certain one of them will make the 3 deep this year and get some PT.

I never said you did. I just don't see a scenario playing out that they will have much impact as true freshmen.

Jordan Hill and DaQuan Jones made a decent impact as true Frosh. Its all about depth for them.

Still rehabbing his foot injury, but I expect Penn State's best defensive end during the 2011 season to be Jack Crawford. Hill and Jones are tackles, if they have to play end again this year the defense will be in trouble.

Olinayan is was my sleeper call already. Speeeeeeed off the edge... maybe even Royer. I like Baublitz too but I think CJ might be the winner out of this group.

I would really like to see Olaniyan and Baublitz step up and see some significant PT. To be honest, I've moved on from Latimore. Never was very impressed by him.

Any news on Royer? Hopefully he put quite a bit of weight on, but he has a motor that never stops. Would like to see him get a look this year.

Royer is up to 232, which is great since he only came in around 210 last year. Still, he needs another 15 lbs before he becomes a viable option at DE, even as just a specialist.
I agree with Itz, Stanley will be the guy. I would love to see what CJ-O could do there as well.
I also think that you could have Stupar playing some stand-up DE if needed. The only problem there is that he is our best pass coverage LB, but I think it is worth a shot.

I'd assum Stanley would be the go-to guy to step up here but we have some talent behind him with Olaniyan and Baublitz. With Pete done for the entire 2011 campaign, and Crawford and Latimore having issues just getting healthy, I'm wondering if this means Zettel can step up right away. I think he has the best opportunity out of all the freshman coming in.

I would like to see Fortt myself, they were talking about that last year before he started getting the stingers. If not fortt maybe try Glenn Carson he is 240 and can run and he kind of reminds me of Tim shaws build when he played that position

The only problem with Fortt is that he trimmed down to 225 (IIRC).

Keep Carson in the middle. Yanich maybe. Give him a specialized position for certain downs, getting him involved in the defense.

I think it would have to be Stanley as well as Baublitz and C.J. getting a very good shot. But I'm interested in seeing the 3 DEs from this year's class, Zettle, Barnes, and Oakman. I'm guessing after this year Zettle will be moved to the inside. But I'm very interested in seeing Oakman. Kid is 6'8, 6'9 250 and is an athlete. I think he will surprise some people.

Yeah your right there, I didn't realize fortt trimmed down to 225. That's to light for DE in the big ten.
I guess the real answer is not going to be anyone new, we just need latimore and Crawford to step it up, big time! Hopefully we can get better play from the OLB to help them out this year

Maybin crushed at about 230 lbs. Not that any of these kids have his first move, but to be a specialist they may not need to be 250.
