Who Are Your Top 5 That Need to Step Up?

  • Here is my list:

    1. Paul Jones..make it or break it season for him..he has to qualify academically or he has leave. He is the best true QB we have IMO.
    2. Zach Zwinak..#1 FB coming out of high school..could be a huge weapon coming out of the backfield.
    3. Kevin Haplea...TE in Bob's offense..need I say more.
    4. Daquan Jones..him and Jordan Hill can be dominant on the D-line.
    5. Stephon Morris..we need one shutdown CB to limit what the opponent can do.

    Getting a healthy Massaro and Mauti back will be huge as well.

    ...and if you're not down with that, then I got 2 words for ya.."suck it!!"

    1. Paul Jones - has a big opportunity to make impact IF he is eligible.
    2. Shawney Kersey - loss of Moye means a big void at WR and Kersey has the talent to make impact
    3. DaQuan Jones - loss of Still ... it's his time
    4. Kevin Haplea - We don't have a dominant TE on the roster, but the offense is TE friendly
    5. Derrick Thomas - putting all the bs and troubles aside, the kid has the talent to see plenty of action

    D. Jones - Would be a nice compliment to J.Hill
    P. Massaro - Hoping that injury doesn't set him back at all
    D. Thomas - Get your head on straight and see what you could be this year

    I'll also say SOA. Did a decent job on ST's this year, would like to see what he could do in the defensive backfield, it's wide open back there.

  • I'm not trying to start a debate, but I still think McGloin is going to be our guy just based on his ability to grasp the complexity of the playbook after just one offseason. I do believe that there will be a fair competition, but it took PJ 2 yrs to start getting Jay's playbook. And some of you guys know how much I love PJ. Just sayin.

    My list (sorry for being simplistic):
    1. Matt McGloin: QB is the most important position in football
    2. Sean Stanley: Pass rushing DE is the 2nd most important position in football
    3. Donovan Smith: LT is the 3rd most important position in football
    4. SOA: Will be a starter by default. Cannot be a complete liability
    5. Derrick Thomas: CB is the 4th most important position in football. Even if he's not starting, we need 3 solid CBs on the DC. Could also be useful in the return game

    I think McGloin will be the starter too, but if Jones is eligible maybe..just maybe..we can have a spirited competition.

  • Here's my top five

    1) Adrian Amos--He's going to be the shut down corner for Penn State and probably draw the opponent's top receiver. He's going to have to pick up this new defense very quickly and start making huge plays all by himself.

    2) Eric Shrive--No more excuses. I know the last regime was sort of toxic for offensive linemen, but it's a new day and there's no reason why he can't improve by leaps and bounds in a very short period of time. He was a 5* recruit. Time to become an All-American lineman.

    3) Justin Brown--He's the big target on offense now. He needs to develop into a dynamic threat which will draw double teams from each opponent on the schedule, especially Ohio State. This is more than possible under Stan Hixon's tutelage. Look what he did for Steve Johnson (7th round pick, 224th overall).

    4) Michael Mauti--He is the unquestioned leader of this defense and this team (a la Sean Lee 2009). He may have to will them to wins against opponents like Virginia, Indiana, Navy and Temple who can bite us in the ass if we take them lightly. Against Ohio State, Nebraska and Wisconsin, his legend will be written--we just don't know what it is yet.

    5) Silas Redd--(What? How can you pick Redd, LITW? He was the only good part of our offense last year?) Redd has been productive yes. 1,200+ yards last season. But this kid is capable of even more. He must strive for that rare legendary status. If the offensive line can create the holes this season, Redd could break LJ's record. I want to see him step up and do it.

    I don't understand why people are convinced Paul Jones is so great. I know he did well that one B&W game, but he hasn't done anything after that since he can't keep his grades up. I am not saying he can't be, but I just don't see why he is getting so much love when he hasn't been on the field in several years. shrug

    I don't think he needs to step up on the field, at this point he shouldn't even be eligible like lists for these. he first and foremost needs to think of getting his shit straight in the classroom for his degree. That degree is more important than the field.

    But otherwise I feel the same way about Shrive. Someone said time to step up and be an AA? Time to step up and make a depth chart. Kid's soft. Still has some of the best size on the roster and he can't make any sort of impact. He's my first Senior I go to and ask not to return for his 5th year, if history repeats itself this year and he does nothing again.

  • (1) Matt McGloin -- I know some people want Bolden, Jones, or Bench to start, but our best bet to win the Leaders Division is for McGloin to actually play like a fifth-year senior with two years of starting experience, to show more maturity and leadership, and to absorb every bit he can learn from O'Brien and Godsey's coaching.

    (2) Justin Brown -- even if we take the Pats' WR by committee approach, we still need someone to step up as our #1 WR. Brown is the best bet to do that.

    (3) Daquaun Jones -- DT is the most important position on defense in college football. If you have DTs that can collapse the pocket and draw double-teams, that frees up your DEs and LBs to make plays. Jones won't match Devon Still's productivity, but we need him to make plays from the 3-tech and to complement Jordan Hill at the 1-tech.

    (4) Derrick Thomas -- if he can stay out of the doghouse, our depth problems at CB are solved, and we'll have a nice trio in Thomas, Amos, and Morris to allow Roof to play his agressive schemes.

    (5) Stephen Obeng -- we know Malcom Willis can play, but the other safety spot is a mystery. If SOA can even be serviceable, that will go a long ways to shoring up the secondary.

    Im not convinced he is great.

    He needs to step-up and push the other two QB's. He CANNOT be any worse.

    This thread is for players that need to step up their game, not for players who we think are great.

    I'm not sure people think Jones is so great, but they are convinced he might be better than the other two options. Being away from playing the game for two years doesn't help, but one look at the way our QBs performed last year should give him motivation needed to be in the thick of things as far as starter - if his academics are in order.

    I don't know how Malcolm Willis will do in the new defense PSU runs. Pass coverage is not his strong suit - hope he proves me wrong.

  • 5 positions that need to step up

    QB, T, G, S, CB

    new positoin coach for all these positions.. I have the most faith in Mac to turn around the o-line, but with no qb coach right now and a secondary coach that is unproven, it could be a long season..

    I'll generalize it more ...

    1. Some of the young OL need to step up. Tackles and Guards needed.

    2. Someone needs to become a threat at DE. Newbie or vet. Need a rush.

    3. TE - its a brave new world. Not only because of the new offense, but because we finally have competition. For two years, we had NO competition once Gilliam went down, nor any production. Now we have Gilliam, Haplea, Kerner and Carter, plus whatever surprise we may see in the fall form the new class. The days of needing to play Cadogan at TE are over. Hopefully. Now lets see who can become a threat.

    4. QB - enough said. Don't care who it is, just find a guy, employ a system that maximizes the talents/limitations, and get moving into the new age.

    5. DBs - not that there's much competition, but someone needs to grab the open spots. And pray they stay healthy. I don't even want our safeties hitting anyone in the spring. Quick quiz ... name the starting safeties for each squad in the Blue-White game? Good luck.

    I guess great wasn't the best choice of words. I just don't see how a kid who can't learn well enough in the classroom to be eligible for 2 years straight can learn a whole new offense in one offseason. I'm sure he may be mechanically better than the others, but I just don't see him being able to handle a whole new playbook when he can't even get eligible. Obviously, I wish him the best and hope he steps up his game, but I just don't see it happening yet

    3. Mike Farrell - getting the other tackle position solidified would be huge
    4. Ryan Keiser- no idea if he can play, but I hope he is better than SOA, who I am not high on at all
    5. Kyle Baublitz - I think Stanley will do well on the other end, need Baublitz to be at least good against the run
