What's the best craft beer you've ever had?

    Yeah, might take a while longer to get my level up that high.

    When I first got into the craft beers it was around Christmas time, and my friend could not stop talking about the Mad Elf. I tried one and was barely able to choke it down.

  • I'm kegging 10 gallons of home brew, Penn State pale ale this weekend. I tasted the hydrometer sample and it was great even non carbonated. Brewing an Amercian pale ale this weekend.

    Many of the beers I have the most appreciation for are high alcohol ones....quads and barleywines. I had a better tolerance a couple of years ago when I was 40 lbs more than I am now, but I still tolerate them quite well.

    Mad Elf is good. The cherry can be a bit much, bit it has good flavor.

    Yeah, I think I'll give the Mad Elf another shot next season.

    I've just cracked my second Perpetual IPA and put Cowboys and Aliens in the DVD and the wife is watching tv in the other room. I'm happy.

    Agreed with ou on the high % beers being my favs too... It does take a little time to get your beers legs but once you do look out.

    DocAlan... Have you had either maredsous abbey or mother earth Tripel overhead? Both fantastic triples... I didn't read back if your mentioned those or not already.

    I am a big fan of Maredsous 8, which is their dubbel. I have not had the tripel, but would love to try it. I don't know Mother Earth at all. I'll put it on my list.

    Mother earth is here in nc but not sure how far they distribute, so it may be tough to get but if u are ever in the area please grab a bottle. Haven't had the Dubbel from maredsous but I'll definitely look or that now.... Love talking beer with everyone!

    Zero doubt, the higher the alcohol content the more complex the flavor (I have no idea why this is the case, but it is). That's why it's so much fun to visit some of these breweries. You can sample the good stuff they don't bottle much of.

    Don't forget the 120 (though not really like a beer, more like a barley wine). Best to split with a friend and sip.

    Awesome. Just racked an IPA into secondary and added some Centennial and Cascade hops. Can't wait to try it in a few more weeks.

  • A lot of great beers listed in this thread. I steer towards the hoppier ones and my recent favorite is White Rajah brewed in Strongsville Ohio. If you can find it I recommend it. I have never brewed my own yet but am growing my own hops right now. They make a great tea for insomnia. Full Pint out of Pittsburgh (North Versaille) has some worthwhile beers too with my favorite being Chinookie.

    I'm embarrassed to say that I live in Pittsburgh but have never tried any Full Pint beers. I always seem to find one that I want a little bit more. I will give them a try though.

    Also interested in the home brewing. Is it difficult and/or expensive?

  • I am definitely not a beer connoisseur, but I tried and really enjoyed Bell's Oarsmen Ale this past weekend. It's apparently from Kalamazoo but I had it outside Philly.

    I have never had it but have tasted other Brew Dog Beers and been impressed. The only reason I tend to stay away from beers of that gravity are because I remember having DFH's Worldwide Stout the year they released it at 23%ABV (I believe it's around 18% now) and enjoying the flavors and complexity but being turned off by the huge hot alcohol flavor that overwhelms beers when they get that big. It's almost as if they are no longer beers and are more along the lines of a Port, etc. Don't get me wrong... I love some big beers, but once you get above 18-19% you might as well get a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue.

    Best beer I had recently was in a little Coffee Shop with all kinds of outrageous Belgians and Craft Brews and they had one of my all-time favorites on tap: Schneider Aventinus Weizen Dopplebock (So much better on tap).

    Well this stuff is basically a liquor (32%), and a lot goes into making it.

    If I ever see it near me, I'd probably break down and get it just for novelty's sake, but I haven't seen it anywhere in Maryland. I do remember there was a big legal battle to get it into the US, which I think they finally won last year.

    Just had Full Pint for the 1st time this weekend. It wasnt bad -- something different to try. Has anyone ever been to the North Country Brewery in Slippery Rock? They dont sell wholesale but decent beer.

  • Never had one with that high of an ABV. I do like the high gravity ones I have had, though. Ever had Samichlaus? Strongest lager in the world at 14%. Good stuff.
