What's the best craft beer you've ever had?

  • PSU2001 said...

I live in Pittsburgh, but have never been to this place just over the state line in Boardman, OH.

    http://vewinebeer.com/

Supposed to be the best retailer in the country. Does anyone have any reviews/visits they wish to share? It looks like it would be worth taking a drive for. TIA.

I'm in Pittsburgh, too, but have not yet taken that trip.

I've been visiting their website for the better part of 2 years now, and they've always claimed they were close to an "online inventory" of their beers, besides a list of the brewers.

You've inspired me. Maybe I'll go during the long weekend.

Glad i could be of help roughneck. Let me know how it goes if you make the trip. Do they carry cases also, or is it strictly a mix & match bottle shop?

Not sure, but I think it's a bottle shop.

I've actually gone away from the bottle shops recently because the beer sections at Giant Eagle have been awesome. If you haven't checked it out, the new GE in Glenshaw rules.

I agree - the G.E.'s are doing a good job with their varieties.

As a side note, I fetched a case of Harpoon's Summer variety last weekend....needless to say that only got me until Monday. There will be one lucky distributor in the area tonight who be selling me 2 or 3 cases of who knows what.

What's your fav. local brew roughneck? I like the Penn Dark, but am always looking for a different brew try.

  • On the subject of awesome bottle shops, if you're in northern Baltimore County, Shawan Liquors is stellar. Since leaving the Philly beer zone 9 years ago, Shawan has been a local savior.

Back on the topic of the best beers, I hadn't been on BeerAdvocate.com in a long while but its no surprise that Pliny the Younger is the #1 rated beer. While scanning the list, I saw one that I haven't had in a long while that's absolutely excellent -- Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel's Peche Mortel. If you like espresso...and of course beer...and you think it might sound good to have a beer with a strong espresso character, this is a home run.

    Good one. Delirium Nocturnum....even better!

The Peche Mortel is excellent. I'll take Founders Breakfast Stout over it... But a great complex brew.

  • I asked this earlier in the thread and nobody responded, so I'll throw it out there again.

Anybody else brew their own beer? There has to be some fellow homebrewers on the board, right?

I do not brew at my apartment because of space concerns, but used to have a nice set up when I lived in PA. I have a friend that I help brew full grain every few months.

I love brewing... especially with friends and we are determined to attempt to brew the biggest barleywine that either of us has ever brewed (try to go above 12 abv.) - formulating recipe/grain bill as we speak.

Do you brew full grain or extract?

Just did my first all grain batch last month. Going to bottle it on Saturday. Just an awesome fun hobby. Having a big bash on Monday with BBQ and homebrew. Can't wait!

What kind of styles do you like to brew?

I'm all over the board as are my tastes in beer. I really enjoy playing with different layers and textures of malts so I would guess my favorites to brew would be bigger maltier porters, stouts, and bocks. Used to rack to bottle, but going with kegs now-a-days. My buddy and I have really got a good system down now... it's just a matter of trying to make whatever pops into our heads. Favorite beer I recently brewed was actually an imperial IPA brewed with local honey... called it Lupulin Stinger... got it up to about 8%abv.

BBQ and beer (but especially Home brew) were made for each other. Enjoy the fruits of your labors. What kind of beer did you brew?

Going on a Cruise (Western Carribbean) this coming week and the only thing that would make it better is if the little islands and Cayes we stopped at each had small batch brewhouses where we could drink quality local suds instead of Caribe, Red Stripe, and Corona... not that there is too much to complain about when you are on vacation.

I brew all kinds of stuff. I used to brew amber ales that had a nice balance of malt and hops. Then I went on an IPA kick where that was all I brewed. Right now I have a Black IPA in the fridge that is absolutely delicious. Got an American Amber Ale I'm going to bottle this weekend. Right now in the fridge I have a few bottles of Irish Red Ale, Belgium Saison, Raspberry Wheat, and Chinook IPA from previous batches. I expect that will all get drank up on Monday.

Next weekend I'm going to brew an Oktoberfest. I might have missed my window, though. May be more like a Novemberfest when it's done. Then I'm going to brew a Stout or two for the winter months. Just tried some Yeti Stout while I was out in Denver. I may have to try to find a clone recipe for that sweet nectar.

I'm going to get into kegging eventually. I just sank about $500 into going all grain and upgrading my fermentation chamber, so I have to cool it for a while. I'm hoping to make the jump to kegging maybe next spring.

I'm a bit of a beer snob and thankfully NC has quite the selection available. Just curious to see what everyone would list as the #1 beer they ever had? I love stouts and IPA's and have a lot that I enjoy... but I finally found my soul mate.

Epic Brewing- Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout... Highly recommend, unless you live in NC (then back away from my reserve) weights

I'm en route to Asheville Beer Week. I'll get back to you.

No one beer stuck out above the rest, but every beer I tried from Pisgah Brewing was fantastic. Asheville has a ton of breweries and all of them were solid. Great place to go for a weekend if you like mountains and craft beer.

I home brewed a good bit several years ago, but it away from it being busy. I ordered grains today for two 10 gallon batches. My first brew session in a long time starts this week.

That's awesome. Way to get back into it in style with two 10 gallon brew sessions. Sounds like an awesome weekend. I'm going to pick out a recipe and gather the ingredients to brew an Oktoberfest this weekend. Hope I didn't miss my window. May be more like a Novemberfest until it's actually ready.

What's the ABV on something like that? Might be too much for me.
