What's the best craft beer you've ever had?

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I live in CT and my friend lives in Somerville, MA which is just north of the city. I plan on staying at his place all weekend and I'm sure we will be fully prepared by eating earlier. I heard pre-gaming is definitely a bad idea. LOL! Nice to know its a good time though. I am sure we will probably head out somewhere after as our session is from 6-930... I think the pretzel necklace is a MUST!

Any from the northeast brewies (that you remember) that are worth trying? I've had quite a few from DFH... Any good stouts you can think of?

I just took a peak at the brewer lineup and beer listing and the names of the NE breweries sound familiar but honestly I can't recall what was good and what wasn't... After we left the festival the night didn't end but my memory did :). Lots of the beers mentioned in this thread will be there so I'd write a few down if you can.

One's I know locally though are Duck Rabbit (from NC) will be there and they have a good stout and Porter. Big Boss from Raleigh looks like they'll be there too and they have a good brown ale (bad penny). A must must have though is Left Hand's Milk Stout... It's pretty smooth and one of my favorite stouts.

One other thing I would note about that festival though is that if there is something you want to try you should do it as soon as you get there. There were a few on the list I wanted to try but I waited too long and they sold out pretty quickly. I also remember that Stouts and Porters weren't all that prevalent, so do a little scouting to find them first if that's what you want.

    Ahh good times!

  • A couple of my friends and I have considered going to a Belgian Beer Fest here and there, but each time we discuss it, we realize how much it will cost, and we then decide to spend a lot less and go to a local bottle shop, buy a bunch of different beers we have never tried, and sit and have our own beer fest while watching football or NASCAR. Still a lot of fun!

Have you been before Sean? I sooo want to get out there... I hear it's the promised land for beer junkies.

Have never been because I'm usually kinda busy that time of year. The wife surprised me with a birthday trip out there for the weekend though.

Really looking forward to it, love Denver, Boulder and that whole area.

  • Certainly not a craft beer, but I was a big fan of Zima.
Dropping a Jolly Rancher in there added a nice flavor too.

Was in Boulder for a good friend's wedding a couple years ago and we hit up the Avery Brewery (strange location, but whatever). It was both a good and bad idea. It was a good idea because we made nice with owner and he ended up letting us sample everything (and most of it was great). Bad idea because the three of us who went were in interesting shape by the time the wedding started.

Anyhow, I recommend popping in if you have a chance. And yes, Boulder/Denver is absolutely beautiful, would love to live out there.

You might want to clarify that you're joking, otherwise you're about to have 100 beer snobs all ripping you at the same time.

Love their Lawnmower and Weedwacker on a hot summer day.

Love Great Lakes. Went to "beer school" there last summer. Just picked up some Holy Moses. Do you have a favorite?

    Of course, the Christmas Ale.

The Dortmunder is a solid drinking beer, and the Burning River is a nice ale.

The Conway's Irish (seasonal) is pretty damn good, too.

Stay away from the spring beer, however (Glockenspiel?). Not a fan...

I kind of feel silly now, but I wasn't joking.
I know it's not a craft beer, but it's something different.

Sometimes my friends and I would drop several different jolly ranchers into a Zima. We called it a "Rainbow", it was yummy and enchanting!

Avery White Rascal is a solid solid White. Enjoyed the hell out of at least 6 of those at Union Jacks/Manatanwy Inn last summer. Not sure exact count cheers

  • I think there are too many good beers to narrow it down to a favorite, even within a particular style. I drink different styles during different times of year, am moving away from stouts and barleywines and into pale ales and wheat beers. I do like Belgians of all types, anytime.

I am going to Ommegang's Belgium Comes to Cooperstown festival this year and am already excited.

Founders just came to my area in the last week and I am happy, had to drive to PA for it before. Hopefully Bell's is next, their 2 Hearted Ale is pretty awesome stuff.

A partial list of (domestic) brewers I think do a great job- always subject to change

    Ommegang
    Southern Tier
    Victory
    Founders
    Bell's
    Great Lakes
    Dogfish Head
    Jolly Pumpkin
    Cigar City
    Westbrook (my current favorite)
    Russian River
    Lost Abbey
Anchor is a sentimental fave, their 2011 Christmas Ale was outstanding.

Also, I recently had a Captain Lawrence Reserve DIPA, right up there with the best IPAs I've had, including Pliny and DFH 90.

  • Nice. Looks like the distributer in Hatboro. Love to try new beers. What are some of Russianriverbrewing's best beers? They have the Supplication, Replication and Damnation. First year I missed the AC beer fest in some time.

  • I don't have time to mess around with fluid that has less proof than my every day blood stream. I have the stuff now they make mint juleps with at the Derby. It turns out it's cheap and currently on sale. :)

Nice. Looks like the distributer in Philly has a Wegman's in Warrington as a client. Love to try new beers. What are some of Russianriverbrewing's best beers? First year I missed the AC beer fest in some time.

Just get what you can. It's not cheap, though.

Pliny the Elder is their signature beer, a West Coast IPA. They do a lot with aged sours as well if you're into that kind of thing. Damnation is probably their most common, it's an excellent strong Belgian. My wife brought me back a few bottles of RR from the Foodery downtown a couple weeks ago, I've also gotten Supplication at the Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting.

Justin Hopkins, our West Coast guy, always taunts me about being able to get it out in Oregon. I hate him for that.

I have gotten Damnation at Capone's in East Norriton. The Iron Abbey in Horsham gets Pliny the Elder on tap from time to time. It goes quickly.

  • All the RR beers are great, but I do think Pliny the Elder is a bit overrated. Blind Pig is better. The wild ales are pretty good across the board. I'm pretty lucky to live relatively close to the brewery and have easy access to their beers. If you can find them, definitely try them.

Pliny the Younger, it's worth the hype and I think this years batch was better than any other they've produced. It was fantastic.

  • Sly Fox. Am craving a Rte 113 IPA and it just occurred to me I'd be slamming one fresh out of the tap at this very moment if I wasn't working on the road in Harrisonburg, VA. DAMMIT!!!!!

  • Dogfish Punkin Ale was my first real beer, so that's always going to be near the top of the list. It's like the Final Fantasy VII of beers for me. Is it the best, probably not, but it was my first so I'll always hold it in high regard.

Firestone Double Barrel Ale is one of my favorites, but I haven't been able to find it on the east coast.

    Same with Anchor Bock.

    PureRockFury

  • Stone Russian Imperial Stout
    Oskar Blues Ten Fidy
Bear Republic Racer 5 (on tap as well)
    Troegs Nugget Nectar
    Dogfish 60
Pliny the Younger (had it at the Oregon Brewers Festival in 07)
    Stone Ruination
    Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
    Victory Storm King Stout
    St Bernardus Abt 12

    There are many.

  • Maybe not my favorite (hard to choose)... but I really enjoy Long Trail especially when I get up to the brewery. The tour is underwhelming and self-guided but the location is awesome the food is awesome and I really enjoy the IPA, double bag , and the Hibernator (Scottish Ale). I recommend checking it out if you are up through Vermont. It is within striking distance from ski areas like Okemo and Killington. On a similar note, if you are in northern VT, hit up the Magic Hat Brewery. Awesome Brewery to visit. Harpoon is fun and tasty as well if you are in Boston. OK, enough from me before I go on forever.
