What's the best craft beer you've ever had?

  • If your close to Silva, NC check out Heinzelmannchen Brewery. I really enjoyed their selection. Their slogan is "fresh hearty ales made with wholesome grains, fresh hops & no preservatives.

  • Russian River Supplication is going to be mine. We had a mini vertical tasting, my friend aged one for 2 years and we had a new one also. The aged Supplication was on another level of amazing. I'm a sucker for the sours.

  • I could never answer this question. So many to choose from. My favorite breweries are Victory, Odell's, Descutes, DFH, Weyerbacher, Rogue.

  • I don't know if I really have a 'favorite' as there are lots of great beers out there. I really like stouts, ales, and am a pretty big fan of IPAs as well.

    However, if anyone is on the northeast coast, I just purchased my ticket to the 'American Craft Beer Fest' in Boston on June 1-2. I am going with some friends to the June 2nd evening session. 125 vendors with 500 or so different beer selections. It's one of the largest on the East coast from what I hear. I would post the link (shows all vendors/beers plus event times) but I'm at work. Going to be a fantastic time!

  • No love for Dogfish Head? Burton Baton is my favorite brew from DFH, and for the NC folks, it can be found occasionally at Fresh Market.

  • Loving this thread. I was out in Denver a few weeks ago and made a point to stop by the Great Divide Brewery and try the Oak Aged Imperial Yeti Stout. Awesome stuff.

    I'm also loving a lot of stuff from Widmer Brothers these days. Love the Nelson Imperial IPA and their Pitch Black IPA.

    Anybody into homebrewing? I've been doing it for about three years and having a blast. I mixed up an American Amber Ale a couple weeks ago that's going to be a great summer session beer. Got a Black IPA that just came out of conditioning that is just awesome. Also in the fridge I have an Irish Red Ale, Chinook IPA, Raspberry Wheat, and a Petite Saison D'Ete. Thinking about doing a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone next.

    We went to this last year in Boston and had a great time. The vendor turnout was great, but there was a ton of Northeast Breweries there... which were pretty good beers, but at the same time disappointing because I'll probably never be able to get some of them again.

    We did the early show that started @ 1pm and after a few hours of drinking high alcohol beers it started to set in on the whole place, lol. The lines to almost every brewer were insance... but DFH set the bar pretty high as that line was out of control.

    Have a great time though Jack, we really enjoyed it. The food there though was a little underwhelming so get a good base before you go and make yourself a pretzel necklace and you'll be straight.

  • I agree with many of the suggestions listed, will throw out Lagunitas as a relatively new and excellent brewer. I like all beer. The more flavor the better. Nothing better than visiting the brewer and trying out the special stuff on tap.

  • I've been a member for quite a few months and it took a topic about craft beers to make me come out of my shell.

    Depending on my mood I have a few favorites:

    Deschutes--The Abyss
    Russian River--Pliny or Blind Pig
    3 Floyds--Zombie Dust, in my opinion, the best hot weather beer, period.
    Troeg's Nugget Nectar
    Bourbon County Stout..
    Lastly, I have Racer 5 on tap at home

    Living in Northern CA, I have to trade for 3 Floyd's, Bell's and Goose Island, so I don't get to drink them as much as the RR beers.

    I love beer if you haven't noticed...

    Actually, they had it on tap at a brew pub in Denver. But, it's very hard to find. I live in Arizona and no distributors carry it. I will probably road-trip to Cali this year and load up.

    Strangely, I just noticed on their website, only one distributor east of Denver carries it, and it's in Philadelphia:

    Rogue - enjoy the Chipotle Ale

    Oskaar Blue's - Dales Pale Ale is solid

    For some reason many people and friends that I have down here in NC hate Victory. I think they make great beer... from Prima Pils (which is a truly amazing and distinct Pils), to Storm King, Golden Monkey (Great triple, although for some reason I like Stoudt's better), and Hop Devil (Used to be my go to - most bang for your buck - craft brew). I miss all the great breweries that were in Pennsylvania when I lived there. Probably the place (as opposed to actual beers) that I miss the most is Selinsgrove Brewery. That place is everything that a little hidden gem of a brewpub should be without any of the over-the-top bells and whistles of a lot of the new brew-pubs that bounce up all over the place. Hope that place is still kicking out tasty small batches of beer.

    They have so many outlandish and creative beers that I sometimes forget how much I actually enjoy stuff like their Indian Brown Ale and 60 minute IPA. Old School Barleywine is one of my favorites of their's... watchout if you can cellar it for at least 8 months.

    It is, but it's also running the risk of getting TOO big. They're starting to limit the number of tickets to try to keep it small. As you can imagine, it's becoming a really hot ticket. (Pro Tip: Members of the American Home Brewers Association get opportunities for advanced ticket sales and VIP passes to special events. Annual membership is $44 I believe.)

    These days it's not hard to find a good beer festival going on somewhere near wherever you live.

    I definitely want to get out to the GABF some day. Have to wait until the kids get a little older though. I'm at that stage where life revolves around school, soccer practice, swimming lessons, etc.

    Dogfish Head - I highly recommend their Vodka's as well.

    I am good friends with quite a few people in the industry. I got a chuckle when I saw several people list them as a favorite. I can tell you this much, they take GREAT PASSION in their trade.

    It is Crazy how little money some of them make but yet they get up everyday loving to go to their job. My buddy won a gold medal at GABF and he is making half of what you think he would.

    By the way, I haven't seen anybody mention this brewer but try anything from Sixpoint Brewing. I don't know anybody there but when my friends said it is good I listened and I wholeheartedly agree. Righteous Ale is outstanding in my opinion.

    Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I live in CT and my friend lives in Somerville, MA which is just north of the city. I plan on staying at his place all weekend and I'm sure we will be fully prepared by eating earlier. I heard pre-gaming is definitely a bad idea. LOL! Nice to know its a good time though. I am sure we will probably head out somewhere after as our session is from 6-930... I think the pretzel necklace is a MUST!

    Any from the northeast brewies (that you remember) that are worth trying? I've had quite a few from DFH... Any good stouts you can think of?
