What teams in college besides Penn St do you enjoyt to follow?

  • Just curious to what your opinons are and why you like certain other teams as well.

As you know, I am a diehard Bama fan and graduate by the way, so they are my team of course, but I enjoy so much about college football that there are other teams that I pull for as well, for numerous reasons.

Of course, there is Penn St and I am not going to go into anymore details there.

I got my Master's at Wisconsin and enjoyed them while Alvarez was there, but am not a fan of the new crybaby on the block and he has turned me off completely to their program, although I do like Bo Ryan and the basketball team.

My dad went to USC, so I cheer for them as much as anyone can cheer for Lane Kiffin. I do think Lane is going to be a great coach. He got a bad rep while at Tennessee, but he had them heading in the right direction before USC came calling. He got called out for the bad publicity, but I can tell you that Tennessee would kill for any publicity of any kind right now.

I know this might not be popular here, but I like Michigan as well. Soured on them for a while, but I was a big Bo fan. Didn't like Carr and RRod, but I really like what Hoke has done there and would like to see them do well. Being such a football fan, the pageantry of tOSU and Michigan is something that I love, when both teams are good, although my hate for tOSU will never let me cheer for them.

Although I am a Bama fan, I am do like LSU as well. Have a lot of great friends down there that have made many trips to Baton Rouge very special, so I do cheer for them as well. When you guys played them on that attrocity of a playing surface in Orlando a few years ago, I wish I could have been there.

I guess that's about it. Don't like anything to do with the Big12, although I cheer for OU out of that conference when possible. I spent some time in Austin, Texas, and although it is probably the nicest city to live in that I have ever been, the Longhorn fans were not what I was hoping for. I am sure I was just around a bad group though, as we all have those kind as well.

And, I am a season ticket holder at Auburn as well as Bama. They are tickets that were passed down through my wife's family (she is a Bama grad as well, but does have some Auburn blood in previous generations) that I just refuse to let go for some reason. We use them every other year for the Iron Bowl and give them to our LSU friends for their game there, but the rest are donated to a charity that a company that I used to work for is partners with.

I think that I am going to like Nebraska from everything I have heard, as I am going to Lincoln for a game this year and I have heard great things. I wish I would have planned for it to be the Penn St game, but that would break one of our rules. We have to cheer for the home team and we get dressed up in their team colors, except for my Bama hat.

  • Whoever is playing Notre Dame, Ohio State or Michigan. I'd throw Pitt in there, but who cares at this point with them?

  • I follow VT, UVA, and 'Bama.

VT and UVA just because they are seemingly in our back yard in the mid-atlantic region and we recruit fairly well from the state of VA.

'Bama for obvious reasons. They have a rich tradition just like PSU, much richer, IMO. Love the classic look of the uniforms.

If you look back at things, Alabama has been rewarded for being in a major conference more throughout the years than Penn St. I do think that Alabama was at a higher level from the late 1800's until the early 70's than Penn St, but since then, no one has been any better over the long run than Penn St. They are right there with USC, Nebraska, Bama, Notre Dame, Ohio St, and the Oklahomas. Have to add FSU and Miami as well I suppose.

Not being in the B1G until '94 has an affect on the number of chances Penn St had to actually win the big prize, IMO. I think you could have probably given JoePa another 2 or 3 chances for a title if he had been in a major conference, IMO. Not saying they would have won them, but the chances would have been greater.

I agree. It's ashame those undefeated teams from 1968/69 never got a chance at a National Title. They probably could've competed with anybody in the country and would've been given that chance had they been in a conference at that time. We will never know now though.

  • I like to follow teams in each conference. I like Bama in the SEC (Saban is the best coach in the country), Oklahoma in the big 12 (always liked stoops), Virginia in the ACC (the campus is beautiful) and Stanford in the Pac12 (similar to PSU).

Central Florida (UCF). My son is a graduate.
U of Buffalo. My wife and I are alumni (me after a year at Penn State).

Conversely, being in a conference hurt PSU's chance at a national championship in 1994.

  • I follow the following college teams, but I don't necessarily like them:

GeorgiaTech - I work right across the street in the AT&T tower on the 41st floor and have a great view of the football stadium, also have many colleagues that attended there.

UGA - not because I like them, but I have no choice living in Atlanta.

Auburn - have some friends here in Atlanta that attended. I swear there's as many Auburn alumni in Atlanta as there are UGA alumni.

tOSU - I love their uniforms, their band, and their stadium, not so much their players or coaches.

Northwestern - love Fitzgerald, respect what he's building there. Always root for the underdog.

Pitt - even though there's much disdain for them from fellow Penn Staters, I do root for them just because their in the state of PA.

BAMA - I think Saban is the best coach in the country. Since I'm a huge Chiefs fan, I recall watching Derrick Thomas take over a game against Auburn when he was a senior at BAMA. I was hoping the Chiefs would draft him and they did. My wife became good friends with Derrick when he played at KC and she had nothing but nice things to say about him. Love the history between PSU and BAMA.

That was a travesty. Not to take anything away from that Nebraska team, as that was a really good team as well, but they should have split that tilte that year. You had 2 truly dominant teams that would have won the championship in 80-90% of the time had they not been in the same year.

That still might have been one of the most impressive offenses ever put on the field. The balance was amazing and is exactly what an offense should strive for. You hear about a defense trying to take away what an offense does best, but that offense took away whatever the opposing defense did best.

It's a shame Carter had such a severe injury. He had a Marshall Faulk type career written all over him, IMO.

The view inside Dodd Stadium from the outside in downtown (kind of midtown actually) Atlanta is priceless. Such an intimate stadium as well. No bad seat in the house. It is kind of odd to drive up on the stadium for the first time though with it kind of sunken into the ground admidst the city. I know that tower well and you have a great view.

Fitzgerald is the closest thing to a Paterno that is left today. I would love to have him replace Coach Saban at Bama one day, but I am also hoping that he decides to stay at Northwestern because is really seems like a school and area that he and his family truly love. He could easily have a 30 year career there and possibly even throw in a few B1G Championships. Northwestern has shown the ability to compete at the highest level when things go their way.

Derrick Thomas was a true gem. My dad was a coach and teacher of a LBer at Bama that came in the same year as DT and he used to come to our hometown for some holidays with him since DT was from Miami. I was not living there at the time and missed him the first time, but was able to meet him one weekend. He was only 19 or 20 at the time, but just lit up the room. Such a passionate person and it showed on the field. The game I remember the most was the Texas A&M game in 1988 when he had 5 sacks and 7 TFL. Here is a quote that Bill Curry (Bama's coach) told Marty Schottenheimer (Chiefs coach) when he was debating whether he was big enough and worth drafting so high: "You put him on the field day one, and he will be your best player and he will be the best player you will have on the Kansas City Chiefs every time he steps on the field."

Here are the records he still hold at Bama:

Blocked Kicks, Game: 2, at Kentucky, 1988 (tied for first)

    Blocked Kicks, Career: 5

    Sacks, Game: 5, at Texas A&M, 1988

    Sacks, Season: 27, 1988

    Sacks, Career: 52

Tackles for Losses, Game: 7, at Texas A&M, 1988

Tackles for Losses, Season: 39, 1988

    Tackles for Losses, Career: 74

Quarterback Hurries, Game: 9, vs. Penn State, 1988

    Quarterback Hurries, Season: 44, 1988

    Fumbles Forced, Season: 7, 1987

Fumbles Forced, Career: 10 (tied for first)

  • My dad was a Pitt/Penn State fan (he went to IUP), and tried to get me to like both by taking me to games to both schools. I just fell in love with PSU and did not mind Pitt until I got into HS where a majority of those around me are Pitt "fans" if you want to call them that. Now my disdain has grown stronger as a lot of these people went through college at schools like Pitt-Johnstown and Pitt-Main.

I say I root for Stanford/Navy/Boston College, but it is just to hard to care or root for another school other than PSU. All my passion and dedication can only be given to one school and that is PSU.

  • Good Topic.

Penn. My Dad went there, I've been to few of their basketball games. I always root for them in the ivy's.

Temple. Literally all of my friends in high school went to Temple. I got a scholarship and into their honors program when i applied, but wanted to come to psu instead. Still a great school, and it's fun rooting for a traditional Philly underdog.

Alabama. Me and my roommates came pretty close to ordering Alabama t-shirts last December because we are pretty big fans. By far my favorite SEC team.

Teams I kind of like for no particular reason: South Florida, BYU, Cal, Hawaii.

  • BOOMER SOONER.

Although outside of my top two I go conference by conference.
    PAC12: UCLA
    SEC: USCe
    Big East: West Virginia
ACC: VT and Miami, and I've always liked GaTech, especially now that they're running the flexbone.

I also root for OkiState when they're not playing OU.

  • Villanova basketball. Been a fan of theirs since 68-69. Just as much of a die hard for them in basketball as I am for us in football. A guy I went to school with went their to play basketball (Clarence Smith) and been a fan since then. When VU and PSU play basketball I root for the team that it means the most for to win. I hate those games:)

  • I'd say Bama (tradition) & Oklahoma (in-laws) are the two teams I can pull for when I flip onto their games against almost anyone else.

Loved seeing Todd Graham at Pitt... was hoping "high octane" was going to stick around for at least a few more years as I enjoyed the pain it was causing my Pitt buddies. smoke

  • Alabama is by far the team that comes 2nd after PSU to me. Never really had an opinion for or against them until this year when Bama played us in Happy Valley. You guys were the only fan base to actually interact with us at Paternoville & were delightful to talk with. In doing so I realized how similar the two programs are & in the months since Bama has really grown on me.

Beyond that LSU b/c they have a live tiger mascot! ...kinda hard to beat that. Plus I feel Death Valley is about the closest stadium experience you can get to that of Happy Valley- sounds a little weird but both are very hostile environments for opposing teams... got to appreciate how loud that place can get.

I always find myself rooting for UGA because I like Mark Richt... same with Northwestern & Pat Fitzgerald

You would think as a PSU fan I would despise Michigan, and I do for the most part when they play PSU, but against anyone else I will probably root for Michigan... Idk why I guess their traditions & the Big House always appealed to me, and Ann Arbor is a beautiful town (in the warmer months). Their fans are actually pretty nice for the most part. They also happen to be the arch rival of one of my most hated teams: OSU ...the enemy of my enemy is my friend i guess

The Air Force Academy because their campus is the most beautiful college campus on earth...

Anyone who is playing Ohio State, Iowa, Notre Dame, USC, or Pitt, or worst of all Texas.
-OSU for obvious reasons (could write a whole book on it)
-Iowa because they dealt PSU the most devastating loss of my my life back in 2008 (seriously, after that game I didn't leave the house for 2 days)
-Notre Dame because of the whole "we're better than you because we're Notre Dame" superiority complex
-USC because they cheat (see Reggie Bush & payments, or Brian Cushing & steroids)
-Pitt because I live just outside of Pittsburgh (though at university park now) & had to deal with the whole "what's so great about PSU, State College is in the middle of nowhere/you're just jealous because of our 9 national titles" ...seriously, they have a worse superiority problem than Notre Dame fans, only they have never been relevant in my lifetime
-Texas because of the whole Richard Nixon declaring Texas the national champs over PSU in1969, essentially screwing us out of a national title just so he could gain the Southern vote (never forgetting that!)... plus they have a superiority complex that is almost worse than Notre Dame's & Pitt's combined, you know... the whole "don't mess with texas" thing
