What are we doing???

  • Let me first say that I want the whole truth in the Sandusky scandal but I don't want to shoot ourselves in the foot anymore than we have to.

So why in God's name are we investigating judicial affairs? Why would the BOT ever allow that? Freeh works for them. Do they want NCAA violations? It makes no sense. Do we have a suicide wish? I would never allow Freeh to investigate that if it was up to me. Why are we taking chances with that?

You can find the truth in the Sandusky case and not probe into other areas.

If he came up to me and said "well I'm pushing the investigation towards preferential treatment to football players in judicial affairs", I'd say "Why the h*ll are you doing that?" "Stick to Sandusky".

God help the BOT if we weren't going to get sanctions based off of Sandusky but get them due to judicial affairs. Thanks a lot geniuses. Let's find out about Sandusky period.

Just my opinion. Do you agree/disagree?

  • I'm not so sure the leaks are coming from the Freeh investigation. I think there are a lot of people in Judicial Affairs with axes to grind after years of feeling like they were getting bossed around by the athletic department. This is a convenient opportunity to leak things and not get caught or have to worry about the repercussions.

My guess is that this has to do with keeping the promise of complete openness.

To date, the PSU administration and BoT have earned the reputation of being very secretive.

That's my guess in answer to your question.

My question is; Why wouldn't you want to be able to go forward without ANY questions about PSU, the program or anything to do with the brand?

My word to describe much of what the BOT has done is deflection. I see this as attempting to choose where the focus is with things. That is just an opinion though

We're not talking payments here. We're talking about suspending a kid one game or 2.

See how strong our foundation is after the beating we've taken PLUS devastating penalties. We wouldn't have a shot.

This is more of a CYA school by the new admin. They are playing nice and bending over backwards for the sake of the media/national opinion. Guess what...that ship has sailed. They may as well say they want to kill football and will melt Joe's statue as football allowed all of this to occur. It's much easier than stating we had some people that made horrible choices and may need to go to jail because of it. Media wants blood and a big name to sell hits/advertisements. People up there are running around scared.

They are allowing leaks or leaking this info themselves. Jerry's actions were awful, but schools lack of reaction back in November and prior has not gotten any better. You would think the new president would be speaking out how furious he is over these "leaks". Hasn't happened. If you investiage the JA now, maybe you can turn up more dirt on Joe and further deflect the situation from the school towards one man. If Joe was up there covering it all up and influencing the JA...so be it. I just don't care for the witchhunt for Joe that has been fairly constant. He was a human, he made mistakes, but they are pretty much steering it clearly at Joe. We'll see how much of it is actually warranted in time.

If sanctions are deserved, self imposing them will be a start in rebuilding our credibility...which is currently at ground zero. Everyone deserves to know exactly what happened. PSU deserves to be completely opened up. If we don't like the results, so what? We need to deal with them, admit ALL the errors, and be held accountable. If it means our football team misses out on a few mid-tier bowl appearances, we lose a few recruits, and we have a few less schollies for the next 3 years...then so be it. "Having a shot" is the exact type of distorted thinking which got us into this mess.

The Sandusky issue and Judicial Affairs have no relation to each other. I'm all for the truth getting out in regards to Sandusky, but I could care less about Judicial Affairs. If I thought there were major problems then I might have a different take. The university and the football program were not in disarray when this news broke, in fact quite the opposite. There's no reason to be subjected to a full investigation of the university as a whole. There are skeletons in the closet of every school in this country.

Well said. We need to expose everything and take our lumps. The public needs to trust us. This is not about football, this is about having people trust Penn State as an institution.

It all starts with having an internal investigation that trumps any kind of investigation that any other organization could do to us. Freeh finding out about things is a lot better than him passing them by and the government discovering them.

Find everything you can, self sanction, implement new guidelines and train the staff relentlessly to carry out the policies. That is what you need to do when the whole school set off a self inflicted stink bomb.

  • I'm not about taking sanctions for any "noble" purposes. No "so be it" with all due respect to tdiddy (not being disrespectful at all).

I wouldn't bend over and take it with regards to judicial affairs. Again, jmo

  • I think if we get anything, it will be probation. Which is essentially meaningless for our program.

sanctions are basically a side effect to this. the goal is to air out everything. after an event like this it has to be done.

what's more annoying is how it's getting leaked. release it all at once.

Doubtful. IMO...stress IMO...the preparation has already begun in respect to clearing the scholarship decks.

PSU currently has 78 scholarship players. We have 13 seniors and 16 fourth year Juniors, as many as 9 of whom will not be returning for their 5th years IMO. That means we could lose as many as 22 players from a 78 man roster. That leaves only 56 kids on scholarship heading into 2013. Are we currently building a recruiting class of 30? No...more like a class of 20. Do the math. It's being done for a reason...again IMO. The numbers rarely lie in respect to these types of things, and the PSU staff is building cautiously in relation to the possibility of upcoming restrictions.

Frankly, as awful as it sounds, PSU football is in an advantageous position to 'handle' scholarship reductions and bowl restrictions. The scholarship roster will be thinned out of a lot of dormant spots after this year, and we're not in a position to seriously compete for premiere bowls for at least 2-3 years. If appropriate, I think it's in the program's best interest to impose punishment ASAP when the full report surfaces. Based on the numbers, I have a feeling that such conversations may have already occurred.

    Interesting thought.

However, that would be assuming that all 9 of those 4th year juniors don't return. Right now, I could see a class of 23-24 (considering how many offers we have out there), which would mean losing 3-4 of those 4th year juniors. That's somewhat conservative, but I think that's how you generally plan a class.

Certainly something to keep in mind during the year as we watch both departures and commitments. I could see Brandon Moseby-Felder being the next to leave, considering where he was on the depth chart. JMO.

100% agree. If clear NCAA violations were uncovered by Freeh, take the hit now. Even if you take a 3 year self imposed postseason ban (which I think is the max that they would go), that only affects two years for the class of 2013 and one year for the class of 2014. Then, you can impose a 5 scholarship per year reduction for those three years since the vast majority of our roster is JR and SR.

The current team with undoubtly be pissed... but you have to do it immediately because uncertainty in the future is way worse than sanctions today. Way, way worse.
