Went to a Carnival tonight in Wilmington...

  • they had a silent auction of some really nice stuff. One was a Masters flag signed by Jack and Tiger, another was an autographed framed picture of Jack, and all of his Master's scorecards. They also had a Joe paterno signed football.

We got there, and the flag had a bid of $500. The Fooball had a bid of $1000. My wife thought it was ridiculous, but I said, there isn't many of these out there.

Thought it interesting that the football was going for twice what the flag and the picture combined were going for.

Had a pair of front row Phillies tickets, but the high bid was $50.

Damn. Tell her that ball is going to be worth a fortune... Not to mention the sentimental value... But 1000 is a small price to pay for a long term heirloom and probably a very valuable piece of memorabilia.

  • I recently won a nice piece for my sports room in a silent auction. It was 2 pictures nicely framed in one frame. One picture of cal autographed by him and the top pic was the complete national championship wrestling team on the podium autographed by the entire team and cal. Some of these charity auctions have some nice finds.

Joe was pretty good about signing things. I don't think anything with his signature will be worth a fortune due to the sheer volume of signed items out there. I have a signed Sports Illustrated from 2005, for example.

Most of joes stuff in the last 20 years was signed by Spyder, secretary and auto pen. Very little was actually signed by him.

So he only signed a lot of stuff until he was 60 years old? A lot of stuff out there, but I don't know how much is authenticated.

The older he got and more popular he became the less he signed. My mom worked in annual givings and even in the 80's most of the stuff was being signed by auto pens and secretary. Not saying he did not personally sign your item or other stuff but vast majority he did not. Psu would get sent a lot of things for him to sign and he would as long as you provided a return postage paid envelope.

  • My wife knew one of the student managers and got a signed football for my birthday a few years ago. I would like to think that it is signed by him but who knows. I would never tell my wife that I question it.

One item that I know was signed by Joe is the mini helmet that I gave to my dad 2 years ago. I got Joe to sign the helmet after the coaches clinic scrimmage in 2009. It was a poor scrimmage. Joe wasn't very happy and stormed out of there. I tracked him down and he grumbled about signing it. At the time, I figured I should take the chance to get it signed while I still could. Turned out that was probably a good decision....

  • Glad I have one already :-)

  • We have a charity golf tournament every year for my nephews who suffer from San Fillippo Syndrome. I run the silent auction because of my job and its ability for me to "get stuff." Each year I got a fresh autograph football from Joe, both years it sold for $750. I already have one or I would have paid that in a heartbeat. Not sure how I'll fill the void this year, but I have an idea...

  • We had a football signed by Joe at one of his 'Night with Joe' events some years ago. Very thankful for that.

  • I have one of the actual game balls that Joe signed from the 2009 rose bowl when we played USC and lost 38-24. Got it through the Penn St university auction. I've thought about getting rid of it. I always felt I paid too much for it but now it seems priceless.
