Welcome to the Terps!

  • I am happy to have an away game that is a day trip. I am happy to have a school where we can be true regional rivals. I am happy to have a right coast partner in this conference that is really North Central. I am happy to chat football with UMd alumni that still live in this area (I am in York) rather than hearing from bonehead ND, OSU, and Michigan "fans" that have never stepped foot on those campuses but boast they are part of that clan....

  • I know some people will only look at this from a football perspective and say meh, but I'm excited about the addition in terms of basketball and lacrosse. Adds to a B1G conference that's arguably already the best bball league currently.

  • Living in the DC area, I look forward to seeing PSU play in Maryland. I have a feeling there will be a lot of Penn State fans in the crowd.

I know I definitely plan on making the trips!

  • If anything, this will allow for drivable road trips every so often! I like it.

  • As a 9-year Maryland resident, I approve. In a unique turn, Under Armour may be my next employer.

  • Welcome, Terps!!!

I really like this move. And we get a close game!

I look forward to playing them in football. I do NOT look forward to playing them in basketball.

  • Two things ...

    1) MD is a great fit for the entire sports program. They have fantastic traditional non-revenue sports (like soccer, lacrosse, field hockey) that will up the ante in the conference.

Not that anyone notices, but lacrosse (both mens and womens) is booming, and this really adds strength. Hopefully MD can get back some of the sports they recently dropped due to $$.

    2) Byrd Stadium is not very big, and the pre-game and game experience there is lacking. PSU can sell out something big like Redskin Stadium for a nothing game against Indiana, but we'll be lucky to get many tickets for Byrd. Unless the Terp alumni want to go scalp for profit. It will be a tough ticket. And I refuse to tailgate in a parking garage.

But it will be so refreshing to drive 45 minutes to the game, rather than fight the six hour drive home this past Saturday.

Kerry probably has some mixed feelings about Maryland wrestling entering the Big Ten. His passion to build UMD and the ACC's national standing in wrestling will have to be redirected. However, the lifeline for cash-strapped programs at UMD may now be in place. Selfishly, it'll be fantastic to see PSU and UMD for a dual.

My guess is that they will play the PSU/MD game in Redskins or Ravens Stadium. Danny Boy Snyder and Steve Biscotti (big MD fan) will be drooling over the fact of having PSU and MD playing at their stadium like the old days at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.

any ideas on what this may do to divisional alignment?

My guess is one of our football weaklings but strong basketball programs...Purdue, Indiana or Illinois gets moved over to the other Dungeons and Dragons division.

any chance they use this as an excuse to completely redo it again? They were obviously criticized for the names, and they were also criticized for splitting Michigan and OSU. I was wondering if they use this as an excuse to completely scrap and correct their mistakes.

I used to tailgate in the front lawn of one of the churches on ? Campus Drive.

I'd bet they don't do that. Its a payday, but you are basically giving up your home field edge. It would turn into a PSU home field. For the once in a while game, like if PSU rotated on the schedule, or a ND tour, maybe. But not for a routine every other year game. You may think it sells out every time, but I get sick at the thought of Snyder cashing in all the time.

It stays at Byrd. No info, just a guess, but i'd be willing to bet tickets on it.

I think if UMD can make money on it they would do it, that's the only reason they're in the big 10. If an Indiana/PSU game in DC can draw an announced attendance of 78,000 and make money imagine what UMD/PSU can do.

  • I hope we can take over the stadium on gameday. Same with Rutgers. Sort of 2 extra home games biggrin MD/DC/VA is prob. our largest alumni base outside of Philly/Pittsburgh (maybe even more than Pittsburgh).

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

  • Steve Jones just said Under Armour will prob. be a big part of paying the $50 million exit fee for Maryland.

Thought the same 2 close games we can travel to. Went to Byrd Stadium few years back for a game got a program and looked at the top 10 attendances all time and I believe 4-6 were Penn State games in the past thought that was hilarious. I am a big Terp basketball fan and look forward to seek them play at the BJC.

Penn State 7x National Champs, home of the winningest college football coach to ever grace a sideline.

  • Welcome to Maryland fans.

  • Also, I hope we dont have to deal with many UMD fans on here. At least the ones in that cesspool on their 247 site. Those guys honestly are grade A looney tooney. They were near as bad as Pitt and OSU fans the past year with regards to PSU, and we really have no affiliation to them except we tend to take their best recruits from time to time.

However, I do encourage UMD fans from that 247 to come over if they can reasonably discuss athletics, and not throw backhanded compliments or try and be nice and then run back to their board with what we say like a little girl (see robobuckeye).
