Welcome Coach O

Well the patriots didnt care to renegotiate with him. His name hasnt really been seriously considered anywhere else. The Jaguars are interviewing everybody. I doubt he would get that job. Who knows though. How is McDaniels a hot name. Sure Orton threw for a pile of yards but the Broncos were flat out pathetic under him. Bradford took a massive step back this year under him plus he made horrendous personel decisions in denver. Maybe he will get hired on as qb coach or he could end up back in NE. I dont think anybody would hire him as a head coach at this point.

At least Malzahn has a track record of good offenses with different talent. Do you really think Obrien has a better track record than him. The best thing on his resume is being Tom Brady's newest cheerleader.

You're right its impossible to know if he will work out better than the other names. I cant think of one example where the this type hire of worked in college.

Bradley,LJ, Golden, Schiano (who i dont like but more than Obrien) Mullen (who i dont think is worth the money but...)

The Patriots can't offer him what PSU or Jacksonville can as a Head Coach. Robert Kraft said as much this morning. McDaniels is not an analyst... he's got work. He will probably be sought out by the Patriots to replace O'Brien. Again I think it's silly to just write off a coach because other coaches in the same system have not lived up to fans expectations.

Malzahn has such a good track record that he had to take the Arkansas State job for his first D-1 coaching job. He was passed over in every other opportunity. O'brien has not proven much... but if he has proven anything he has proven on national television that he is not just a "Tom Brady cheerleader." Tom Brady has said the same thing.

Butch Davis's first head coaching job was at Miami. He came from the Cowboys. He did fairly well at Miami before he left for the Cleveland Browns.

Golden, Schiano, and Mullen all would have taken the job. There have been reports on all three to the contrary.
LJ has never been more than a D-Line coach. He may be retained by O'Brien, but he has no track record as even a coordinator, except against Wisconsin and Houston.

All I'm saying is that just because the guy is not a household name doesn't mean he can't coach and run a program the right way.

  • I know mcdaniels has work. But so far outside of New England he has sucked.

Do you really believe Golden, Schiano or Mullen had no interest?

Davis is a decent example . Although he was hired from a Cowboys staff that turned a 1-15 team into a super bowl winner. Also Miami was facing pretty severe sanctions at the time.

Obrien in contrast wasnt even promoted to offensive coordinator until this year. They basically went two years without one. That reeks of confidence in him. He basically inherited Tom Brady and the Pats have been the Pats w/o the playoff wins. I dont think anybody believes he is calling plays there but okay ill give him that.

I just think there are way more warning signs for him to fall flat on his face than there are signs he will suceed.

  • My only problem with O'Brien is that he's not 100% committed to his new job, as evidenced by his staying with the Pats until they are out of the playoffs. If he's not 100% committed, then he doesn't deserve the job here. If he's willing to leave the Pats and start giving the Penn State job 100% of his efforts, then I'm willing to give him a chance. The next three weeks are crucial to PSU's success, we need him out on the road recruiting and working twice as hard at it as the next guy to hopefully salvage this year's recruiting class. If he doesn't, then PSU will be paying for it for the next four years.
