Waters eyeing visit dates

  • I'd expect Waters or another top juco qb to start, Hack to redshirt, and Bench to be the back-up. (But, maybe Hack or Bench will surprise.) Assuming the juco qb plays well, he'd likely keep the job in 2014. In 2015, have Hack, Bench, and future qb prospects compete for the job. I could see the loser in the Hack and Bench competition transferring, which is normal, but at that point Penn State should have the qbs from the 2014 and 2015 classes for depth.

Sadly, the plot rarely plays out as planned.

  • Whether or not Bench starts, he will see time next year. With Hack redshirting, he and Hack will be two years apart. Even if Waters plays lights out, it's possible Bench starts his senior year and Hack takes over for his last two years. Any program that wants to attract big-time QB's is going to have similar issues.

Exactly what went through my mind. Hack redshirts to learn playbook and Waters/Bench battle through spring for #1.

  • With BOB putting so much responsibility in the hands of the QB, it's better to have too much talent and risk losing a guy than having too little talent and not being able to run the system.

The recruiting pitch is pretty straight forward... "Mr Water's, would you like to play in a bowl game or the NFL?... Take a quick look at the before and after with McGloin... We can do a lot for you and you only have one kid to beat out. Give me two years and I'll give you your best shot at the next level."

The biggest concern I think, whoever is the #2 guy (assuming Waters comes here) may have a high probability of transfering out of the program follow the announcement of the starter. Would O'brien wait as long as he could to do this? Would he potentially be "undecided" through all of Spring and even play them both early so they have to stick and not transfer? Should be interesting because we need to keep both so Hack can RS.

I don't agree with the notion that whomever loses out is a major threat to transfer. Why and to where? If you are a QB, you are going to have to compete no matter where you play. Whether its to be 3rd string or the starter there will always be another guy who wants the job. Consider what Penn ST has to offer a QB now: 1)An offensive minded HC who worked with Tom Brady. 2)A QB Coach who tutored Jay Cutler. 3)A true pro style offense w/an emphasis on throwing the football. 4)Major exposure, and a big time college atmosphere. 5)A Penn St. Degree.

Lets say Waters wins out. Is Bench going to immediately transfer? Why would he? This staff believed enough in him to offer him a scholarship to Penn St. when his next best offer was Rice. Don't you think that means something to him? As for Waters it would be borderline nuts to enroll in a school in Jan, and be looking for a new team in August. Who would want a guy like that on their team? A lot of people are hung up by what went on in the past with QB's and they need to let it go. Yes we brought in a number of highly regarded QBs and yes most of them left us hanging. That said consider the circumstances and the former offensive coaching staff.

Devlin- Clearly screwed over at Iowa and realized the writing was on the wall. Made the most of his opportunity at UD.

Newsome- Great athlete but minimal QB skills. Struggled with the playbook, and lacked the coaching to see any development. Currently playing WR? at Temple.

Bolden- Unbelievably overrated out of HS. ZERO feel for the game, and ZERO pocket presence. Currently languishing on LSU's Bench.

Jones- A big strong athlete who was incredibly raw at the position. Inability to grasp the playbook, allowed a True Frosh to jump him. Showed legit promise at TE, but apparently wants to still chase the QB Dream.
