Waters eyeing visit dates

Council Bluffs (Iowa) Iowa Western quarterback Jake Waters has gone from zero offers to being one of the most sought-after JUCO quarterbacks in the country.

  • Well, if he decides to come to Penn State, there's a zero percent chance he redshirts year one. IMO. He might not beat out Bench, or even Hack. But he might. Either way, I don't see the scanrio where he redshirts.

QB1 = Bench, then Waters is #2 while Hack RS.
QB2 = Waters, then maybe both Bench and Hack RS, with one ready to play if an injury happens
QB3 = Hack, then Waters #2 and Bench RS

It would be interesting to see the competition in the spring between Waters/Bench, without Mr Spring (Paul Jones) around.

  • Sure sounds like PSU is a good opportunity for him with Bench and Hack (if they both stick) being his only competition.

  • Kid will have a golden opportunity to start at either PSU or KSU next year based on what is returning. I think its all about system now.

  • I think the biggest plus we have over ksu is that we offered his teammate

You mean, the one that is committed to Iowa State? I don't think that will have any impact.

  • Promising article, which I'm happy for. Just makes me wonder, even a little bit, how/if at all does it affect Hack?!

We've talked about this before, it doesn't. Mainly because Hack wants to RS year one, he isn't afraid to compete, knows that they need a new QB, doesn't change his situation he committed to AT ALL, and of course OB likely has kept him abreast as the situation has gone on.

  • The recruiting pitch is pretty straight forward... "Mr Water's, would you like to play in a bowl game or the NFL?... Take a quick look at the before and after with McGloin... We can do a lot for you and you only have one kid to beat out. Give me two years and I'll give you your best shot at the next level."

  • 2 years ago I didn't think I would ever hear, "It's definitely appealing to a quarterback" about Penn State.

Hack is a true blue chip QB, and still has a relatively clear path to playing time.

  • People might overlook it, but if he is truly interested in academics, safe to say we're ahead of Kansas State.

Also he basically replaces PJ in eligibility. PJ would have had two years left and so does Waters. Hack committed with PJ on the team, so I don't think it will matter him at all.

    The essence of it imo

Correct, its what I meant when I said it doesn't change the situation he committed to at all.

  • Isn't the KSU qbs basically the same as Nebraska? Primarily a running option quarterback sprinkled in with some throws? Seems everytime I see a highlight KSU qb Klein is running an option down the sideline. Haven't watched Waters tape but would that be his strength or would coming here to throw more benefit him?

  • The biggest concern I think, whoever is the #2 guy (assuming Waters comes here) may have a high probability of transfering out of the program follow the announcement of the starter. Would O'brien wait as long as he could to do this? Would he potentially be "undecided" through all of Spring and even play them both early so they have to stick and not transfer? Should be interesting because we need to keep both so Hack can RS.

bingo, i have thought the same thing.....but if he names Bench a starter i don't think the JUCO could transfer b/c he signed in 2013 class and they aren't eligibile to transfer without penalty

You don't announce a starting QB after Spring. You wait as long as you can. No sense naming a starter after Spring. It's rather simple.

Alot of paranoid people on this board IMO.

Except BOB named McGloin starter after spring. He talked about the value of having one, known starter that is taking the majority of reps.

I do think people are paranoid. It's because every time a QB loses out at PSU, they transfer. If Waters is the one losing out, I could see him transferring. If Bench loses out, would he really transfer? I would doubt that. And frankly, I'd expect Waters to be the starter.

  • Check this article out, with the following quote:

"On the recruiting front, quarterback’s coach Charlie Fisher relayed the message of NFL exposure to junior college quarterback Jake Waters when Penn State offered him a scholarship last week.

'It’s definitely the top thing I’ve thought about and it interested me more I guess you could say,' Waters said. 'That’s a big selling point for him and rightfully so too. That’s a big pitch to have and it definitely made me more interested.'"

Nittany Lions adjusting to NFL scouts sizing them up weekly at practice

Having NFL scouts at practice is something new for the Nittany Lions, but they're taking a liking to the exposure.

McGloin was announced early because he was clear cut the leader. Did you expect Bench to come in and become the starter as a true frosh? Did you expect Jones to understand the play-book considering he couldn't figure out the play-book of the last regime? I didn't.

I didn't expect much from Bench this year, but he did name the starter before Bench even arrived on campus. Who said that Jones struggled with the last regime's playbook? Struggling with academics is different than having trouble with the playbook. Believe it or not, it was somewhat expected that Jones would pick up more of the playbook when he put his mind to it. The fact that he didn't is not a big surprise, but he was still in contention early on.

BOB has still expounded the benefits of naming a QB starter early. If he was ever afraid of someone transferring, why would he name McGloin the starter this past spring? Even if McGloin was ahead, should keep it quiet in case Jones looked to transfer.

I just see BOB doing what he thinks is right and not worrying too much about if players will transfer. And frankly, I'm not worried about the situation. Because I think Waters would earn the starting position over Bench, and I don't think bench would transfer.
