Watching PSU Day on the Big Ten Network...

  • Just watched the Orange Bowl against FSU. Now I'm watching the 2005 OSU game. That was a special team in 2005, filled with great players like Poz, Hali, and Robinson. And Justin King was electric whenever he got the ball in his hands.

Question: how many players from this year's team would start on the 2005 team? I honestly think that only three projected starters on this year's roster that would have started on the 2005 team are (1) Silas Redd over Tony Hunt, (2) Anthony Fera over Kevin Kelly as placekicker (but not over Jeremy Kapinos as punter), and (3) Jordan Hill over Scott Paxson at DT. You could argue that Stephon Morris could've started over Anwar Philips. But I wouldn't take Gerald Hodges or Mike Mauti over Paul Poz or Dan Connor, and I also wouldn't take Justin Brown over Deon Butler. And the rest are mostly no brainers.

I'm not sure if this is sobering to see how much less talent we have now than then, or if it is simply a tribute to how great of a team we had in 2005.

  • Hodges over Tim Shaw. Lewis as the Fake FG kicker.

I would keep Anwar over Morris.

I would keep Anwar over Morris.

Hodges plays weakside OLB, which is the same spot Poz played. Tim Shaw played middle LB, so you would need to repalce him with Glenn Carson. I guess you could argue that is a push.

A healthy Mauti over Shaw, then.

    POV

  • Redd would start over Hunt or at least should.

  • Either Mauti in the middle or shift Connor/Poz into the middle and let Hodges start. Beyond that I agree with your changes. I'd probably put Zordich over Snow.

  • Amos over Chris Harrell.
Donovan Smith at RT I would guess.

Didn't Shaw move to DE that year? Thought I remember him moving to the line for some reason.

He played stand-up DE in 2006. The LBs in 2005 were Poz-Sales-Shaw to start the season when Connor was suspended for the prank calls, and when Connor returned, Shaw moved back inside and the LBs were Poz-Shaw-Connor. The DEs in 2005 were Rice and Hali. The LBs in 2006 were Connor-Poz-Lee.
