Urban Meyer

  • Listening to Bill King this morning...Matt Hayes from Sporting News just mentioned that he thinks Penn State is the job that Urban Meyer really wants and that discussions in the coaching community indicate this is very possible.

    Say it ain't so!

If OSU wasn't about to get nailed by the NCAA, I would have thought he was going to Columbus.

Really, really hope not. He's a snake. I'd rather Joe coaches until 2020 than Meyer coaches one game here.

Officially nominated for 2011 Pridey Award for Douche Post of the Year.

BTW, Joe would be 93 in 2020.

That would be a great hire. It is not like our kids haven't had off the field issues as well if that is what all the negativity is about, The difference is that Urban Meyer's teams are way more consistent and he has recent National Championships to his name.

The era of throw away scholarships would be over.

Yes, and he would still have twenty times the moral fiber of Urban Meyer--in his big toe alone.

Instead of going back and forth with others on why it shouldn't be Urban, let's switch it up.

Tell us who would be your top choices to replace Joe?

  • I heard it and it's far from the first time I've heard Meyer and PSU as apparently he thinks he won't have to deal with the boosters as much and really can back to coaching without all the dirt of the SEC or an OSU.

Couple of other interesting things...the Gene Smith interview. Hayes basically said OSU is on crack for thinking that is all they get. He expects them to get hammered. After listening to it, Smith really is clueless. Not only did they fire JT after they said they weren't...now they granted him his reitrement instead. So basically he resigned with benefits and still gets what he wants from OSU. They went from I hope he doesn't fire us. Then it was he resigned and then it was a forced resgination. Now it's a retirement....they are all over the place and Smith may be the biggest idiot around.

The other funny thing is on the Orgeon is Hayes call Lyles a scumbag who has been made out to be a saint that helps the kids. He basically called it like it is...the dude is a pimp and there are hundreds just like him. If you don't play ball with guys like him...most kids won't even sniff your school. Again this is where a ton of PSU fans have their head in the clouds. Joe not visiting and not playing the pimp game (7v7 teams too) will impact PSU's ability to land certain kids. If you don't think so...you really are out of touch with college football today.

One other thing Devon...PSU would be lucky as hell to get Meyer. He left the game because he hated the snake part of it and that is apparently why PSU is high on his list.

I liked the idea from many months back about Tony Dungy...but I guess that's not happening.

You have no utter clue what you're talking about. Meyer isn't perfect. He's made some odd sales pitches in his day. So has Joe. Is it moral for an 84 yr old man to tell recruits that he will NEVER retire or die? It's sales...in which BS is a most effective weapon. If you don't think Joe has shot around some BS to land a recruit in his day, youre living in a parallel universe. BS isn't against the rules, and PSU does it too. Red telling a recruit that NFL prospects are judged against the "Penn State athlete.". That would be BS.

BTW, opposing fan bases would've made the same comments about Joe in the 80's. Your game is weak.

    Guys I would want interviewed...

    - Urban Meyer
    - Bob Stoops
    - Mike Munchak
    - Darren Perry
    - Al Golden
    - Dan Mullen

Pat Fitzgerald isn't leaving NW or he'd be on the list.

  • I'd be really torn. I don't know that there is a better coach/recruiter out there...but there are some issues at Florida. That's the one school that I've heard first hand testimony about boosters paying the football players. I am loyal to Joe, sometimes to a fault, and I always point to his character and the respect that Penn State commands because of it... supporting Meyer makes me feel like I'm compromising.

In a perfect world? Pat Fitzgerald, and there's nobody else even close.

    Devon2012

  • Beyond his questionable recruiting tactics, I'd want less than nothing to do with that offense of his.

For me, if Penn State wants experience it's Tom Bradley. Outside of the program I'd like to see Pat Fitzgerald, the current Georgia coach, Al Golden, or perhaps take a flyer at young, former player.

  • Maybe I'm just under-informed, but I never really heard of any problem directly related to Meyer at either Utah or Florida. I mean, yes Florida recruited some questionable kids that did questionable things during his watch in Gainesville, but wasn't that happening at UF long before Meyer got there?

I mean, Tressel you just knew was dirty. If there's character issues with Meyer, I'd just like to see some reasonable evidence before I string the guy up. From a football perspective, I don't think I'd mind him being considered for the PSU job. You really can't argue with the results of what would be an impressive, though short coaching career.

    Gary Patterson from TCU

p.s. I don't understand the dislike for Urban. He won at UTAH! I feel pretty confident that he did it "the right way" there. Then he proved he could do it in a big boy conference. Never been accused of cheating. Rumors that he left because of the rampant problems in the SEC. Finally, even Joe has gone out of his way to praise Meyer and apparently would support his hire.

I don't believe urban meyer cheated. He just tells recruits whatever they want to great. There are far worse people on the game than urban meyer, and honestly my major issue with him is that offense.

The other thing - whoever the next coach is has to continue with the Penn state way. Success with honor & The Grand Experiment.

Well, he wasn't going to suspend Carlos Dunlap for a DUI until after the media found out about it. And that's just the first thing that comes to my head.

You also don't know if that was him or pressure from others around him. He left Fl pretty quickly, so before you go tossing those stones...make sure that glass house is pretty secure.

He left FL pretty quickly, only to change his mind a week later. And we thought JoePa was an unstable situation?

  • Didn't Urban Meyer say something in his book like Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame are the only schools his wife does not have veto power over? I hope she likes central Pennsylvania.

  • Last time I checked, Joe has recruited some questionable kids who have done questionable things under his watch.

    Also, UFs recent grad rates...
    2005: 80%
    2006: 80%
    2007: 72%
    2008: 68%
    2009: 69%
    2010: 67%

    Penn State:
    2005: 84%
    2006: 83%
    2007: 76%
    2008: 78%
    2009: 85%
    2010: 84%

Prior to Meyers arrival in Gainesville in 2005, UFs grad rates for the preceding 4 yr period were 46, 48, 44, and 42 respectively. While not as high as PSUs, Meyer raised the grad rate of the team by roughly 30%, and the change was almost immediate. Florida consistently finished 2nd behind Vandy in GR...as we do behind NW. Again, he's not perfect, but the guy is far from a scoundrel either. He graduated over 70% of his players while winning a few NCs and sending a bunch of them to the NFL in the process. Not too shabby. I don't think it's ridiculous to believe he could run a highly competitive program with a 80% GR here.

Finally...if he's so morally repugnant, why does Joe hang out with and like him so much?
