  • HS grades and "how they turned out" in college ball? What does that have to do with locking up the homegrown talent????

Hamilton - I absolutely agree with you. We NEED at least one quality back and probably 2. The "we don't need a stud RB" worked for the 2011 class and why we just let Huggins go without a fight. For 2012? THat doesn't work.

In fact, I don't care WHAT position we're talking about, NOT getting a high-quality player at LEAST every other year (and probalby should be every year) is not a good idea at the college level.

If people want to bring up HS Grades and how they turned out , we might as well bring up Derrick Williams with his sub 3.0 GPA and 810 that he got on the SATS (old scale out of 1600).

PSU isn't bringing in a roster of Rhodes Scholars here. This isn't Stanford.

yes it would be interesting, because penn state never takes players who had to take the ACT 7 times to qualify.

but in case you were wondering about some of penn state's recruits....

    Williams carries a 2.8 GPA and 810 SAT. http://pennstate.scout.com/a.z?s=157&p=8&c=1&nid=963487

    Hayes reports a 2.8 GPA and a 840 SAT. http://pennstate.scout.com/a.z?s=157&p=8&c=1&nid=1200843

Notice how people only vote you down and can't refute those statements.

I think that's how you win an argument!

Harris from Downingtown PA......hmmmmm. Is he related to one of my favorite running backs Aaron Harris?(was never the same after his injury)

I say this all the damn time too. Harris was one of the best I've seen at PSU, just nasty. But he was NEVER the same after the knee. Damn shame

Bottom line is that your premise, while interesting, doesn't necessarily translate into a meaningful discussion.

Top three is arbitrary, first of all. Recruiting is done for need, not for style points. So, if the best prospect (skills, grades, character, etc) is number four, is that REALLY a failure?

Too much emphasis on rankings and not nearly enough on "fit". Would you really be happy if we were, by some weird quirk, to get a class of ALL five star kids whose egos wouldn't allow them to actually put the team ahead of their own agenda?

While I'm not happy with the apparent disarray in our recruiting efforts, rating stars (or state rankings) do not guarantee success. So, inferring that PSU is a failure because they haven't recruited enough Top Three PA athletes is, IMHO, is flawed.

yes, i could expand it to top 5 or top 10 in order to encompass more positions, thereby minimizing the "fit" or "need" aspect...but i didn't feel like doing that much work.

HOWEVAH (read that in your stephen a smith voice)...the "fit" or "need" aspect is moot when you look at ohio and oklahoma and texas. they recruit THE BEST PLAYERS. period. and those players, despite their 4 and 5-star status, seem to check their egos at the door, play as a team, and win a heckuva lot of games.

i never said anything about PSU being a failure, but it's a troubling sign that there is talent in PA and the surrounding states (which is supposed to be our breadbasket), and that talent seems to go elsewhere at a far higher rate than in other states/regions.

i'm not really big on the star ratings, but they do have a certain degree of merit. so, i admit, my data is flawed, but i think that in a general sense it shows that PSU is not fulfilling its potential in the recruiting dept.
