Update: O'Brien staying at Penn State

Just a couple things that would be on my mind if it was Urban.... I know I'd hate to go year to year wondering if this is the year he bolts...

Hahaahahah! Of all coaches to use as examples of "stability" you pick your boy Urban "I got health problems" Meyer?

I don't think B.O.B will go, this year. My question is since he evidently looked around this year, and was willing to "possibly" leave, after just one year, do you guys see it as he's gone when that "one job" comes along? Whether it's next year, or the next, etc...

Will it make recruits in the 2014 class have 2nd thoughts about if their coach will be at PSU their 4 years?

The problem with him leaving this year rather than next is the free transfer rule still being in effect this summer.

Yes, he could go from year to year. Same as every other coach in America really. less than 20% of current coaches have seen an entire recruiting class through from start to finish, and many of those guys are rumored to be looking around every year.

It is a business, and people are constantly looking for their best opportunities. BOB will almost certainly end up in the NFL if he continues having success. He could go this year and it could be 5 years from now. Who knows.

Gotcha....Didnt' know they could transfer out again this year....thought it was just last year once the sanctions were announced..

I don't think he'll leave. Honestly I'm very surprised he's interviewing really. Will be a little bit hard to explain to a group of young men that you preached dedication and resolve etc... why you were looking to leave after just one year.

Granted, he may be trying to get a better contract, but couldn't he go about that behind closed doors telling admin that he has been contacted for interviews and not really take part in interviews?

O'Brien just doesn't seem the type that would play games for a raise. He also doesn't seem like a guy that would screw over both the university or the recruits like Hack or Adam. I just don't get it and am very confused and frustrated!!

If its a bigger issue than money, there's only one supercilious arse running the AD to look toward...

Sources told ESPN last week that teams that have gauged his interest have been informed by a third-party representative that when O'Brien accepted the task of being the late Joe Paterno's successor, he was told by school officials the Jerry Sandusky scandal was a criminal matter, not an NCAA concern.

That proved to be bad information as Penn State was dealt a four-year bowl ban and scholarship reductions as part of its penalties.

The sources emphasized O'Brien would not leave Penn State for just any NFL job. He bypassed an opportunity to interview for the Jacksonville job last January.

    Source ESPN

This is a bunch of crap. BOB was given a contract addendum adding more years to his contract in case of sanctions. So he was aware of possible sanctions and even said so himself. Secondly everyone in the country, including former NCAA compliance members, thought this was not a NCAA matter because they had never involved themselves in anything criminal in its history.

Darren Rovell even disputed this Chris Mortensen claim.

You had to post this - to do otherwise is disingenuous and sticking your head in the sand and unfair to the subscribers of this site. Multiple sources are reporting on this and it needs to be addressed.

I meant I debated posting the reply, not the story.

    PENN STATE FOREVER

  • After reading a few of these posts I thought it was 12 - 21 - 12 all over again. He's recommitted. Isn't that what you wanted? I did, for sure. So he
used the situation to his advantage. Good. Bravo, Coach. So he interviewed. So what. He's a smart guy. If the result is it made him happier and want to be even more successful at Penn State. Good.

You've heard of the franchise QB; well welcome to the world of the franchise Head Coach. Now roll with it cause it may get bumpy at times but there will be thrills.

Agreed...we as long time Penn Stater's are not used to the NFL knocking on our coaches door. It is Big Business. We have been lucky and happy living in a very sheltered world. Please don't get me wrong, I grew up in State College and graduated from PSU...Joe is all I ever knew.
It is a very different world and we just had our first taste!

The free transfer rule is basically for a full calendar year, as PSU players have until the first day of 2013 fall camp to freely transfer. Once fall camp starts in August 2013, regular transfer rules apply.

One thing to remember with the transfer rule... teams no longer have the luxury of adding a player above the 85 limit as they did last year.

I don't like OSU "fans" either. That's why I don't hang out on their board.

Next 2-3 weeks may be biggest in PSU football history

If B.O.B stays, I think they weather this 4 year storm, if he goes to the NFL it could cripple them. I know many of you wish the worst on

You better not be joking about that.

We need any kind of entertainment we can get during these dead times now that today's circus is over.

True. I was just referring to the players ability to leave, not their ability to be accepted on another roster. Good point though.

Here you go. The twin part is on page 2. Might want to read the rest of the thread to find the context.

Why don't we have a nifty name?

Every website for college teams on here, Rivals and Scout have their own names. For example, sparty has spartan tailgate, ohio has bucknuts,
