Two 2014 defensemen on board

Continuing to build his program for the future, Guy Gadowsky has received verbal pledges from a pair of 2014 blueliners, Kevin Kerr and Bo Pellah.

  • No video available on Kerr, but here's Pellah scoring his first ever BCHL goal, if you skip to 1:19.

  • I know very little to nothing about hockey, but it is nice to see PSU moving up in the hockey world. How competitive should we be next year as we enter the big boy's league?

  • Thanks much for the update. Yet another PSU coach gettin' it done!!! The Big Ten hockey league is going to be mad. That's why the NHLers were ecstatic when Pegs stepped up.

I'm sure the team will take some lumps the next couple of seasons as all scholarship level players will be only Freshman or Sophomores. The one thing that did help them is that 4 players who played Division 1 hockey last year transferred to the team and they won't lose a year of eligibility because this year's team is club level and not an NCAA sport. Gaining 4 guys who have played a full year Division 1 schedule and are all a little older will help give the team a little extra experience then they would otherwise have.

But still, I think we should all be excited. Guy has a track record as a good coach and he is getting some good players committed.

Depends on what the schedule looks like, it won't officially be released for another few months. There are some big boys on there - 2 games at both Wisconsin and Michigan State have been confirmed. It could take some time for everyone to get on the same page, but once they are it should be a competitive bunch. Don't see them getting run night in and night out.

Next year there will be 5 guys who had played Division I, Max Gardiner will be coming in after playing for Minnesota back in 2010-11. But you're right, getting the transfers will help out.

Totally forgot about adding him to the mix. Good call!

He has the potential to be the best of the bunch too.

In addition to the D-1 transfers, I would also note that most of the projected third and fourth liners that Guy has signed are older (19 and 20 year old) junior players, so we're going to have some grit on the ice and not get pushed around as if we were trotting out a team of 18 year old freshmen.

  • Very happy for the ice hockey team. I volunteered/worked for the Icers for a couple of years back in the 90's when I was a student helping with ticket sales and advertising....it was a good time!

  • For those new to the site, I've got a couple ways to keep track of all the hockey recruits. First there is the Google Map (similar to the football offers one) with all of the commits hometowns: PSU Hockey Map

Then there is an eligibility matrix to see how many guys are committed by year, and includes links to stories about each player: PSU Hockey Matrix

For those asking re: the matrix - Penn State has 18 scholarships available for hockey and can spread them out how they see fit. There's no real insight on the actual distribution because they keep it confidential between player and coach.

  • Building a nice program, picking up dmen playing in good leagues against older guys will be huge for PSU when starting to compete against the big boys. Don't expect these young guys that have been playing against 19, 20 yr old jr hockey players up north at 15 and 16 yrs old to get pushed around much by the time they get to the NCAA. And the US jr development program put out some great ofensive Dmen. Really like what GG is doing with the program!

  • Andrew, if that eligibility matrix is your own, is it possible to add the positions those guys will be playing at psu?

It is my own. I was trying to but with the hyperlinks I was having a hard time making it look good and have the positions there. I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Alright take a look now and let me know what you think: PSU Hockey Matrix

About as clean as I can make it. Appreciate the feedback regardless, as it is the only way I can improve the information.

  • based on this breakdown, i'm guessing the typical college lines run 4 offensive, 3 defensive with about 6-7 redshirts? hopefully the btn starts showing hockey games now that the big ten has a conference when psu starts play..

Every game there will be 4 offensive lines (12 forwards), 3 defensive lines (6 defenseman) and 2 goalies dressed. With 2 game series every weekend, the number of redshirts will likely be much lower, as Guy will want to be able to rotate players into various situations. The top players will see action in most, if not all of the games, but you will see the third and fourth offensive lines and d-pairings jumbled up a bit throughout the course of the season.

  • Don't know much about hockey but I am impressed with the new coaches recruiting efforts - appears he is getting some pretty good talent for this young program..
