Tuesday Scrimmage Report

  • Not a whole lot exciting from the Nittany Lions' second scrimmage today, but there were quality reps on both sides of the ball.

    - The one's and two's got most of the work during the scrimmage, which featured a number of different simulated situations. The offense got work backed up against their own end zone, between the 30's and also got in some goal line work.

    - All four quarterbacks got work with the first team once again. Was told it wasn't a great day overall for the quarterbacks, but was also told that the quarterbacks didn't have much time to throw today. None was able to do much to distinguish themselves in the race for starter.

After a very good scrimmage on Saturday, I was told that Robert Bolden had a bit of an off day on Tuesday.

    - The biggest play of the scrimmage was an approximately 60-yard catch and run touchdown to true freshman Alex Kenney from Paul Jones. On the play, Jones got outside the pocket and hit Kenney about 10 yards downfield. Kenney then outran the defense for the score.

Though the play happened with the third team offense on the field, Kenney has been getting reps along with Devon Smith at Curtis Drake's 'R' receiver spot.

    - Freshman Silas Redd also found the end zone for a short touchdown. A few of the folks I've spoken to about Redd are very excited to see him in real game action.

    - Sounds like it was a very good day for the defensive line. They spent quite a bit of time in the backfield and they really got after it today.

I've been hearing some very good reviews on Jack Crawford. One onlooker described him as 'unblockable.' He and Eric Latimore have firmly entrenched themselves as the starting ends, with Kevin Latham getting some reps there as well.

    - The first team linebackers today were Michael Mauti and Bani Gbadyu on the outside and Chris Colasanti in the middle. The unit did a lot of rotating so a lot of guys got action. Gbadyu appears to be past a concussion that kept him out a few days. Gerald Hodges also continues to draw praise.

    - Cornerback is a spot that has been depleted due to a few guys being banged up. Starters D'Anton Lynn and Stephon Morris both took a seat, as well as backup Derrick Thomas. All three should be fine fairly soon. In their absence, Chaz Powell and Shelton McCullough were the first team corners.

  • Nice update. Thanks!

  • Good report. Oline and inconsistent play from the QB will haunt this team all year. Really worried about our OL.

  • Nice update. I can't remember the last camp that had so much competition and depth at all positions.

  • paul jones back in the drivers seat?

may come down to which one of the three can keep himself under control when they see the field and not try to do too much and let the game come to them

No kool-aid here, but I'm not feeling to bad about the team right now.

  • if we can find some tackles, consistentQBL play and non-white safeties this team could be really good

  • Our DL might challenge OSU and IOWA as top in the conference. Thanks like always for the info Sean. Looks like Mauti has gotten his spot back.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • Good update as always. It sounds like Kenney is going to be the player that could see some reverses this year, but I really hope the staff finds ways to get Redd the ball within this crowded backfield. The running back positional battle is going to get real interesting next year without Royster.

Funny because the thing that jumped out at me was how scary thin we are at CB. Similar situation at OT. We definitely need to keep everyone healthy at those positions this year.

I do agree with you about OT but not the corners. We have 4 good athletes at corner which is better than most years. I remember cringing entering seasons knowing that we were one injury away from Gio Vandemia or Parretta starting. I don't think any team could lose their top three corners. At any level.

What's often more interesting is what is not stated - Brett Brackett listed first on depth chart. How is he coming along? He's had a case of the oopsies so far- are his hands getting any better? Any chance we will see him move to TE? He's a kid we a want to see succeed. I would love to get more updates on him.

Though they're listed at the same spot on the depth chart, the positions aren't exactly the same. Brackett is used more as a flex and motion TE that is usually kept in for blocking purposes, while Drake/Kenney/D. Smith are used more as traditional slot guys who can get the ball in a number of ways. I don't see him being moved down to a traditional tight end, but I think we'll see a good bit of him this year. I actually think they're grooming Christian Kuntz for the same role after Brackett leaves.

Thanks for the reply, Sean. Sounds like we shouldn't expect to see much yardage production out of Brackett. But his contributions to blocking in screens and option plays will be invaluable. I would love to see that height of his be used in redzone plays... Without giving away too much, Is he getting any passes in the endzone with redone drills?

That's not something I've asked about, but I'll see what I can dig up.
