  • I will admit I am a bit of a dreamer, I am ready to be peppered by downvotes and I guess there are 100 NCAA rules against it but ....

    Rather than having the regular intra-squad spring scrimmage for the BW game, why dont univeristies invite other local universities who they will not play the following season for a controlled scrimmage for the spring game? Kind of like the pros do early on in their training camps. No clock, no scoreboard thus no game.

    It sure would be more fun than the intra-squad game, the players, coaches, fans and TV would love it. It would be a great way to welcome Maryland or Rutgers to the B1G. Heck even Pitt would get more exposure than having their spring game at a high school stadium.

    A school could even have the controlled scrimmage in the middle of their spring practices so they could return the favor the following weekend if it wanted to.

  • I just don't think you can control the kids competitive nature in a game like that, even if its a scrimmage, it'd be tough to avoid a gameday atmosphere with our fan base.

    Main reason I'm against it though is due to injuries while we're still trying to put our team together in the spring. In the pros, those guys still go half speed in their preseason scrimmages. In college, you can't control guys in a competitive setting like that.

    Injuries was one of my thoughts.

    Another is that the purpose of the B/W game is primarily evaluation for the coaches. The less they can control, the less evaluation they can do. For example, if they want to see how well the defense reacts to certain offensive plays, but the other team doesn't run any of those plays, they've wasted time. If BOB is calling plays, though, he can call what he wants to see how both the offense and/or the defense handles things.

    The kinds of scrimmages you describe, Prad, would be fun for the fans, but much less helpful for the coaches IMO.

  • Another problem would be the $. They would most likely have to charge for a scrimmage like this to cover travel, etc. Imagine if we play someone like Pitt, who can barely break into the thousands in attendance for a regular season game. It just wouldn't make any sense.

  • I think this is a great idea and I'd be all for it. I don't buy the injury or not being able to evaluate players argument. High school and pro teams do this every year and it works out for them. I think most fans would love to see PSU scrimmage a team like Pitt every year. It would be great for everyone involved.

  • My former high school no longer has scrimmages because about 8 years ago, the varsity squad lost their top two QBs on the first two plays of the scrimmage to broken collarbones. That was in a controlled high school scrimmage and kids were going full steam competing for positions. You can't turn off the passion in high school and college kids.

  • Imho It's impossible to keep it from turning into a real game. Kids will get injured.

    Going off what Bills said, OB knows what he's got in his team and can control the sets. We don't know what the other team has in terms of personnel.

    Ok one high school out if the 1000s that have per-season scrimmages. Yes injuries can happen but the chances aren't that much greater than in an intra-squad scrimmage. Also as far as evaluating players, if we go off of a B/W game Paul Jones would have been the starting QB this year. If the NFL can do it no reason college can't either.

    Paul jones would've been the named starter based off of what the fans wanted, not what the coaches saw in specific plays and sets they called. They knew what they were looking for in certain situations. Most likely they probably already knew McGloin was the starter.

    You also have to take into account, that it was also their first BW game in a new system, offense was barely 1/10 of what we saw in the fall probably because OB was trying to protect his players in their first showcase post JS. In the end, he knew what he was doing and he saw something he could work with from the spring and BW game from McGloin.

    As for the NFL, have you ever seen a preseason game? Now imagine how much more irrelevant NFL starters are in scrimmages. The scrimmages are probably more for the off the roster guys to see what they got to offer, if they get injured in those scrimmages they just go on IR, if not they make the team or get cut.

    Either way, the fanfare and level of competitive nature in college is much more different than the pros.

  • I also think that if you control both the offense and the defense you are able to see a lot more. For example, If the DC is concerned about a defensive backs ability to cover a certain route, he can ask BoB to run a certain pass play that has the WR running said route. Same on offense if you want to see how a certain lineman deals with a double team. Just my opinon

    2. A scrimmage wouldn't generate revenue but would cost a pretty penny.
    3. Not a ton of practice time so it would be sloppy.
    4. Spring is a learning experience, players chnging positions, etc...

  • I always wanted a preseason game... a 1AA cupcake instead of playing the game in the regular season bump it back in August. Pay the team, preferably a semi local team, a bucknell, duquesne, robert morris, villinova, towson, lehigh ect. Pay them 150-300K. Charge 20.00 per ticket for good seats, 5 or 10 for bad. Get 70,000 people(at least), make a million plus in tickets, plus concessions and parking (lower the price on that as well) and have yourself a nice little kickoff weekend. I know there probably are NCAA rules against it but I think it's a hell of an idea.
