Trouble on the team

Oh the stories I could tell about our college locker rooms and dorms on this topic.

I am not at all surprised to hear that. Its like something off a HBO show. Lol

It was. The sad thing is that my one roommate was a 300lb athlete. This kid could do it all. Was an outstanding basketball player and football player and was "training" for the draft and had an agent. I say "training" lightly because he had all the talent but did not want to put in the work except sitting around smoking. He went undrafted but was invited to the Lions training camp but never made it.

Prob. lots of stories like him and drugs. I don't have a real problem with marijuana but when it is taking away from things you should be doing, then thats not good. If you wanna enjoy a smoke at the end of the day or whatever, have at it.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

I guess you missed the part about scales. I doubt they were using the scales to study for a physics or chemistry exam.

If they were distributing, there's an easy solution. My comment was directed toward those who naively think that college football would even exist with such behavioral standards.

If we only recruited kids that actually belonged in college

If the rest of the BCS did the same

    Well you get the idea

    Well that's true too.

Meh, if they were just smoking weed...I'd suspend them. I'm a big believe in using bad experiences to turn you into a better man, as well as not going overboard with punishments as well. You want to teach them a lesson, but you also want to give them a path forward. Just having zero tolerance, IMO, doesn't really help. Well, it probably helps your program image, but I don't know that it helps the students-athletes.

Agreed. But like you have even said, those scales changed everything.

If there was always zero tolerance I wouldnt have competed all four years lol

If there was zero tolerance for college students, there would be a lot of empty class rooms in America.

And Yea, unless it's an extreme case, like you're trying to save your starving family or something crazy, I have zero tolerance for drug dealers. The collateral damage they cause at the beginning of that supply chain is just monumental.

You can't can't claim "oh we were just having some fun and didn't know any better!" with that crime either.

  • Wow, some pretty strong reactions for the amount of facts out there.
1st of all, usually kids don't deal drugs in groups. This isn't a gang...most likely one of the kids who lived in the apartment was dealing and the other needs to do a better job picking roommates.
2nd, are we sure they live alone and don't have other roomies?

Some of you are suggesting consequences without hearing the entire story...Sound familiar? You guys should start writing for ESPN.

Pretty sure we all know there is more to come. But we also understand that this is a near zero tolerance time with what has happened recently.

I wish i could write for ESPN. That'd be an awesome job.

I never cared for Devon. I never liked how he shows up the QB's when they miss a pass to him. He did it VERY often last year with his hands flying up in the air. See ya kid.

I also hated that about him too. But they never showed him up when he dropped a pass layed into him or when we tripped with nothing but green grass in front of him. And if we had any leaders on the team they would have yoked him up the first time and told him to cut it out.

  • Yeah, this one doesn't pass the sniff test yet, fellas (and ladies). The info is a little sketchy. Why were the police there? Why was the stuff sitting out? This all may well be true but I think we can offer these two at least 24 hours before we hang em. I don't want to mention a certain other situation that people jumped the gun on.

If it is true then it's a tragic choice and the two of these guys are going to have to deal with the punishment. No excuses! A lost scholarship might be the least of their worries when it's all said and done.

  • How much is their stipend these days. How much of this type of thing would be avoided with more liberal rules on getting a job? Can they get a job for money to live on?

Yes they can get jobs. And more money wont stop this stuff, they'll just want even more. D1 athletes, specifically those on full scholarship in revenue sports, are more than financially compensated.

don't let the door hit you on the way out, if true, Devon. To be frank...we could use the scholly on better receivers in this class imo.

He is a senior so they were already going to use his ship on this class.

No, I guess I should have done that!

On the other hand and aside from why the cops were there, it still seems a little fishy. I'm going to stick with my first post excluding the question you enlightened me on.

  • Might not be popular comment, but we have other options here for Devon Smith. To be honest, I wasn't a fan. He seemed to complain alot on the field.

It's entitlement and not money that's the issue.

These kids are pampered and given the world from such an early age. They get excused from class, have assemblies in their honor, TV specials to show where they are going to college.

They are the kings of their highschools and are taught to believe the rules don't apply. Can't break an 800 on your SATS? Who cares as long as you can run a 4.40 40. Late for class? Who cares as long as you can beat your rival highschool and win states.

This will never change as long as we let these types of kids into college

  • Looking forward to see others step up in Moo Moo's absence assuming he is let go - He never impressed me. Crawford underachieved as well. They can go "relax" their minds now!

Not to mention WR is our deepest position and one where true freshmen likely can step up and get some reps..

Crawford was sort of like Mo Evans ... one HUGE year and you expected him to go from there and become more dominant. Both regressed big time after those huge seasons.

I tend to agree. Police were alerted to a burglary at the apartment. What I find odd is the "raid" occurred on Mar. 14, 12 days later this story pops up. Why in nearly two weeks have they not been charged by police. There's a lot more to this story than meets the eye.
