Total Allowable Football Roster

  • Are you allowed 105 or a 110 man roster? I know we took a good amount of run ons last year and have a fair amount of run ons returning, my question is if we have around 75 kids on scholarship this year that leaves room for 35 run ons (assuming we are allowed 110). How many run ons are we planning on taking this year?

  • I'm quite sure it is 105. I believe it was Steve who said the staff was looking to take a lot of run-ons this year.

It came to mind today how the sanctions will affect run-ons. People have done the calculations about maintaining 65 scholarship players, then when we get back to taking 25 scholarship players each year, how we could possibly jump back up to 85 relatively quickly.

However, nobody really talks about - what's going to happen to the run-ons? Unless the staff takes a LOT this year, who then graduate around the time when we're getting back up to 85, we need to go from 40 run-ons to 20 in a very short period of time. I think that's why the staff is looking to get a bunch this year. If they take 20-30 run-ons in, for example, 2016, we'd still have them on the roster in 2018 when we're allowed 85 scholarship players.

Just want to say I'm glad that I don't have to plan for this. Could end up being a logistical nightmare - or, if you prefer the more gritty approach, might have to just kick some of them off the team after convincing them a year or two ago to join as a walk-on over other scholarships.

  • I know we say PA as a state doesn't stack up to others which is normally true either talking 5* players or just overall depth, but it will be interesting to see if the run ons who predominantly come from within the state can bridge the gap over the scholarship reduction years.

  • Roster is 105 players max.. Psu is allowed 85 scholarships this year but will probably have less 4 year scholarship spots in order to drop to 65 next year meaning that some run ons may receive a conditional scholarship for this year only. I would imagine this would be the case on the back end as well when the coaches are trying to build back up to 85 which should be a selling point to players looking to run on at psu.

Limit on Number of Participants—Bowl Subdivision. [FBS] In bowl subdivision football, there shall be a limit of 105 student-athletes who may engage in practice activities prior to the institution’s first day of classes or the institution’s first contest, whichever occurs earlier.

Exception—National Service Academies. [FBS] There is no limit on the number of student-athletes who will be attending a national service academy and who may engage in practice activities prior to the institution’s first day of classes or the institution’s first contest, whichever occurs earlier.

The KEY phrase is "prior to the institutions first day of classes"..... After the first day of classes in the fall semester, there is NO limit to the size of the roster. PSU could have 200 kids on the team for the first game who remain on the roster until the seasons end. The reality is that most teams have about 100 kids of which 85 are on scholarship during this time. A larger number is simply unruly and inefficient to coach.

So for practical purposes, only 105 players total ( scholarship and walk ons) can participate in off season work outs. There is NO limit for during the season.

Note....conferences can set limits on traveling squads.

  • Right now I have us at 66 players recruited to be on scholarship. No doubt the staff will give scholarships to several walk-ons who contributed & that would push the scholarship total higher (ex. Lehman), but it wouldnt affect the total # of players.

It is my understanding that we get 105 players total, & we are over the limit right now unless run-ons from last year dont return or scholarship players leave or some run-ons dont practice with the team before the 1st day of school in August.

the 105 limit is for the 1st day of school. So if we have players who dont practice before school starts & then start practicing after the 1st day, they wolud not count against the 105# and could be unlimited.
