Timeline product close to launch

  • Here's a note from 247Sports CEO, Shannon Terry, regarding our timeline product which he posted within the last hour on BamaOnLine, hence the BOL references.

Please note that we are about to launch our first version of the 247Sports Player Timeline. The Timeline currently resides on the Front Page of BamaOnLine (and all 247Sports sites) and on each Player Page (current players and recruits). (it is currently in test mode)

If all goes well, we will have the final bugs worked out and the first version launched within the next 24 hours.

The purpose of the Timeline is to create a chronological update/entry for all significant events for all current players and recruits.

The Timeline data is currently being entered by the various team site reporters, editors and staff at the 247Sports headquarters. In the future, we will build permissions so that trusted moderators and users can also enter updates for free subscriptions, merchandise and site cred.

Our goal is to build a history for everything on a player from preps to pros and along with the other components of the Player Page, the Timeline is a key piece of the equation.

Timeline entries will also serve as a Ticker type feed so that you can keep up with everything regarding your favorite team, with integration into Twitter (and other social platforms) and links back to updates that contain more information.

While the technology is almost complete it will take us a couple weeks to get the staff (about 100 of us) trained on updating protocol. By the end of the month, this should be a really good product for you guys to check out for updates.

Team sites like BamaOnLine and news feeds like Twitter are great for news and updates "in the moment", but products like Timeline will allow us to create a chronology of events so that we can more accurately paint the picture.

There's so much news and information available now and with this comes noise. We are trying to help you cull through everything so that you have access to the most accurate information, whether we (BOL/247) are the news originators or not. We obviously don't and can't break all the news; therefore, we will do our best to assist in curating the news you need to see.

The Tiimeline product is just one of many new enhancements we are making to the network so that you can make us a part of your daily routine.

    We greatly appreciate your support!

    Shannon

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

    Same.

And you just want to be a mod or "trusted user" that has the power to update the timeline lol

You, my friend, have a career in politics if you want to pursue it!

A nice place for any of us to be. (dear God, please remember that #s of posts do not qualify)

  • Amazing that a site already way better than its competitors is still taking huge steps like this to improve. Pretty sure I've found my home.

It's even better now because we made the change this afternoon to only show events starting with the current date and working back in chronological order.

  • The timeline feature is awesome. Now I don't have to go through every one of our targets' profiles to see if any news has popped up.

Just curious, though, why should I care if Dillon Lee is working with the inside linebackers? It looks like we offered him, but he's at Alabama now. Is there a point when it stops following kids who we recruited but they committed elsewhere?
