Like the mediocre 11-win, Big Ten Champion/Rose Bowl season of 2008? Like the 11-win, Capital One Bowl season of 2009? Another mediocre recruiting class like the top 10 group last year?

This year was disappointing, and the recruiting has been poor. But if "mediocre" is 11 wins, 9 wins, 9 wins, 11 wins, 11 wins, and one fluke year of 7 wins, I'll take it.

Nine wins in what amounts to a 13 game season is putrid, when 3-4 of the wins are against pure dogs, and 3-4 more are against bad big 10 teams. That ain't the Penn State I have known all my life.

With Joe or with anyone else we'll be a contender for the Big Ten championship next year. The schedule is among the hardest in the country, so anything less than 2 losses would be an absolute shocker. But is 10-2 within reach? As long as the offensive line develops enough. It'll be an experienced team and hopefully one that will let Joe ride off into the sunset after another Big Ten Championship.

Your crazy and yes 9 win seasons are mediocre. PSU has had at least 4 losses 8 of the last 11 season. Penn State did not have a top 10 class and has only had one and that was 2006.

If the Oline develops and that is a big if I don't see happening. They are losing their best player in Wiz and the elderly Oline coaches PSU has have shown over and over again they are not up for the job. I will put $1000 up that PSU will not win a Big Ten Championship and I will put up $500 that PSU will not have a consensus Top 10 recruiting class with Joe has the HC.

  • Back to the thread topic. I think Joe and Sue pushed management's hand. So, Spanier orders Curley to make a nice nice statement.
These politic moves are making me a little sick to the stomach.

It's amazing... there are 98 Putrid teams in college football this year.

Seriously, some of you need to take a step back and relax. If Paterno gets another extension beyond 2011, then you can bitch, but the guy is signed through next year... anyone who really thought that he would be gone after the bowl game was just getting their hopes up. We'll be fine next year, then we will get a new coach and be fine after that.

I completely disagree, another bad recruiting class and it will take 4 years till PSU will compete for a Big Ten Championship and maybe a NC.

We ain't one of the 98...we are a big dog, that should be hunting big game with the best of them, year after year.

Nine wins is for the Sparty's, Badgers, Wildcats, Boilermakers, etc.

This team had an automatic 8 wins built into the schedule, yet only managed 7. "WE ARE" underperforming consistently.

Find me a program that hasn't had at least two 9-or-fewer win seasons in the past 5. That's an absolute select few, and it's the kind of program (USC, Ohio State, etc) that I hope we never become. I'd rather go 10-3 every year with Joe's ethics of "success with honors" than win the Big Ten every year but compromise our morals to do it.

Consistently? Upsets happen, man. In that Illinois game, we were playing with our 4th string guys on defense due to a ridiculous number of injuries. We had a bad year--they happen! Florida was 7-5, too, and they were ranked #4 in the country at one point. Upsets happen. Fluky losses happen. With old man river at the helm, this team was one bad call away from an undefeated seasion in 2008.

I almost hope that after Joe retires, we bring in a big name that would make all the haters happy, whether it's Cowher or Mullen or Petersen. And I hope he just shits the bed. Misses a bowl game, recruits poorly, gets mired in NCAA investigation and scandals. I won't, because I love Penn State more than I want to spite some of these schmucks, but the idea that we're all of a sudden a crappy program is pure hogwash. We're not in the top 5, maybe, of the past 6 years, but we've been as consistent as just about any team outside of an elite few.

  • Mediocre=Rather poor, inferior

9 wins seasons are not "rather poor", and we are not a mediocre football program. We are at least Top 10 in wins the last 6 seasons.

If you aren't happy with 9 win seasons/If you aren't happy with PSU the past 5 years...that is different. That's your own opinion. But saying we are mediocre doesn't make any sense considering what mediocre actually means.

Guessing the USC reference was in regards to their bowl game they are playing in this year. And the Ohio State reference was in regards to who is going to be their starting QB, LT, RB, WR for the first 5 games next season.

we're mediocre compared to what we should be

In the last six seasons, we've won the Big Ten twice. We've won 11 games thrice. We were one play away from an undefeated season twice, and we've played in six bowl games. Pending this coming Outback Bowl, we're 4-1 in those Bowl Games, and 5 of the six were New Years' Day games.

We've also led the nation in Academic All-Americans, led the conference in Academic All-Big Ten honorees. We haven't been the center of a single NCAA investigation. We've been both successful and honorable.

I'm not sure what more you want us to be, if that's considered mediocre.

What we should be? Try, what we were. This isn't 1994 anymore.

Still, saying we are a mediocre football program doesn't make any sense. We averaged 10 wins the past 6 years, won 2 Big Ten titles, and are 4-1 in Bowl Games. Yeah, we suck big time. Right there with Purdue.

Don't get me wrong either...I'm not content with where we are. I want to be better, I want to be playing for NCs, I want to be Top 5 in recruiting every year. But to say we are mediocre right now...crazy IMO.

USC has been the poster boy for a program gone wild. They took the hardest hit from the NCAA since SMU. Their great seasons, officially, never happened.
Ohio State is just starting to get nailed for the scandals they're embroiled in. I'm sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. And even if it isn't, they've still compromised self-respect for short term glory.
Texas is a program I respect, but they just went 5-7, and lost most of their coaching staff.
Oklahoma is one of those programs that seems clean, but probably isn't, and hasn't been all too successful in their big games.
Auburn paid $250,000 for Newton and only by NCAA hypocrisy are they allowed to get off scot-free And they've only managed 11 wins twice since 2005.
Oregon gets millions from Nike, but this is also their first 11-win season since 2001.

Yeah, I'm good with where we are right now.

Texas isn't even going to a bowl this year. Oklahoma, with "Big Game Bob", are 2-5 in their last 7 bowl games. Auburn is one of the dirtiest programs in CFB, being on probation or having sanctions placed on the team in every decade from the 50's thru the 2000's (not to mention the Cam Newton situation). Oregon was an absolutely shit team until their Rose Bowl run in 1994. Even after that, they never won a National Championship (maybe this year).

I just think that you are taking the "grass is greener" approach to this whole thing.

Gee too bad you weren't a fan in 2008 and 2009 -- those were pretty good years, But if you think it's a good idea to throw the staff under the bus after this season which included a ton of injuries, well, I'm just glad you're not the AD.

Losing to the only good teams we play does not make it a good year. We haven't played to win in a big game since 1999.

and in 2008 we played USC and got exposed as the mediocre program we were. Again, I've posted the record many times, what is our record against ranked teams, ranked teams on the road and against the other top teams in our conference? I don't care about 11 wins if we get them against BS teams. How are we when we play real teams? Answer is mediocre at best. We can pencil in certain losses at the beginning of every season. Again, 8 of the last 11 seasons had at least 4 losses. How is that anything other then mediocre?

Does the term average make you feel better? Penn State will continue to be a laughing stock of college football until Joe is gone. No team is afraid to play us, mainly because they know we haven't beaten an elite team since 2005 and before that 98 or 99. Our coach doesn't know what's going on, our coaches don't know who to follow or if their jobs are secure. Our recruiting is so chaotic it seems at times the coaches don't even know what direction we're going in. It sad, and he's ruining his legacy.

like last year is a perfect example, there were 2 games at the beginning of the season that were the only 2 games we could lose the entire year, and we lost both of them, who cares if we beat cuse and temple etc. etc.
