  • Are we going to see any lineup changes? Who will get more game time this week?

    springbok

  • any update on how long hodges will be out? Did he have a break, sprain, bruise?

    pennstatedavem

  • Kent State apparently has a good rushing defense. Do you see us improving our yards/carry? Do you think we'll see more of Redd?

I don't believe we'll see anything drastic. Johnnie Troutman will start at left guard this week, I think he's outright won the spot. I expect to see a little more of Khairi Fortt this week behind Bani Gbadyu as well.

On offense, I've heard the coaches have liked what they have seen out of Silas Redd and he could see some time before the fourth quarter.

  • Sean -do you think Zanellato gets an offer this weekend? He has had a strong start to his senior season but there seem to be some questions about his speed.
    Thanks

The word I've gotten on Hodges is that there's a crack in the bone, after the game the other night it was thought to be just a bruise. I haven't heard of a timetable to be back but I expect about 4-6 for that type of injury.

  • Sean, any visitors this weekend that you've heard from?

    PSUGrad91

  • Do you think one of the main reasons our OL/ RB's has struggled is because Bama and YSU loaded the box against us to put the pressure on the QB?

Think the staff has moved on from Wasonga and focusing on only Mason?

Off the top of your head, how many ships available for next year?

Which of the OL has been the most impressive out of Cadogan, Shrive and Gress this year?

Also I heard that Luke Graham is playing DT. Any verification.

    Thanks like always Sean.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

Good. Those are the 2 I'd like to see more of too. Esp. Redd, early.
Is Eric Shrive going to live up to his recruitment ratings? Is he even making progress?

I actually expect Penn State to struggle running the ball again early, personally. I also expect Penn State to try to continue to plug away and try to get something going on the ground throughout the first half. It could cause for some frustration in the stands but I think this line really needs that sort of thing to get going.

Kent State isn't going to plug up the running game in a typical fashion, they don't have 330-pound space eaters inside, they just get to the ball quickly and that's pretty impressive.

I think the total yards will be there, but the yards per/carry will be about the same as we've seen unless the offensive line plays a little tougher.

    1) I agree that both teams loaded up to stop the run and make Rob Bolden pass the ball, but I'm not convinced that's the reason why the run gain has stalled. The offensive line just hasn't been very physical at the point of attack. It's almost like they hit and dig in instead of hit and drive. The holes just aren't there.

    2) I don't believe the staff has completely moved on, but they're not ready to take Wasonga. There are some concerns about him off the field that they want to see about before moving forward. Also, I've heard that with the limited ships available that there is going to be more of an emphasis on adding to both lines than will be on skill players.

    3) Next year should be a fairly full class, maybe right around 21-23.

    4) Shrive and Gress have both worked with the second team at times, but I'm really not sure which one I would consider to be having the better year. They're both working with the scout team now so I'll see what I can find as far as who has been more consistent. All three are at least a year away.

    5) Yes, Luke Graham is at defensive tackle (as of last week). I reported that here a week or two ago.

I think Penn State is going to hold off on offering Zanellato as long as they can. Right now there is no rush to get him on board, because there isn't much competition for him. If he were to get an offer, I don't believe it would take long for him to hop on board and I think the staff knows this. He's not a burner, but he's a pretty darn good wideout who knows how to play the game and he's a better athlete than most give him credit for. I'm very surprised that he does not have an offer from somewhere yet.

Right now Crowell, Zanellato and Kyle Carter are the three 2011 kids that I have down as coming. I've literally gotten no other 'yes' answers from prospects about this weekend. I'm hoping that changes tomorrow.

Shrive is making progress, he just wasn't as ready to come in and play as some thought. He needed work in the weight room and needed to improve his footwork and technique. He got by in high school by being bigger and stronger than everyone and that just doesn't cut it in college. Give him some time, he's just a redshirt freshman.

There are a few guys I've heard of but I like to touch base with them before I report on them just to make sure things are legit. You can bet that I'll post updates here when I do make contact with these guys.

    Awesome news?

Sean, you think Stanley or Massaro will take Lattimore's job before Iowa? He hasn't done anything to date this year.

    That would be great news.

Sean - without getting into specifics, do you know if the issues with Wasonga are a recent development? There have been reports of troubles last year, but supposedly nothing new.

  • Sean,

Thanks for the chat. Do you see an increased role for Justin Brown? Every time I see him, he's impressed me, and I'd love to see him take over as a relatively dominant possession receiver along with Moye as the deep threat.

It's pretty much just been described to me as I said it, there are a few issues there. Also, I'm not sure there's room for two running backs in this class any longer.

I don't see any drastic shift in Justin Brown's role any time soon. I expect him to get about the same amount of work this week. I actually expect Penn State to try to get Graham Zug a little more involved this week. Yes, he dropped that pass last week, but for this offense to get going he's going to have to be a bigger part of the equation, in my personal opinion.

I agree that Eric Latimore has been a disappointment thus far, but I don't see him outright losing his starting job. I have been impressed with both of the backups, they've just been more active than Latimore. I can see him losing time, but I think he'll be the starter by Iowa.
