Things you're looking to see this spring

  • What are some key things you are looking to see this spring to take our team to the 9-10 win season many are predicting?

    1. Leadership - we lost a tremendous senior class and the leadership those guys brought with them. We had extremely vocal leaders like Morris, Mauti, Zordich, and McGloin and we had the lead by example guys like Hill and Hodges. Our defense lost a crushing amount of experience and leadership from that unit. Our offense just needs one leader to step up and get that offense on the right track when the going gets tough. Doesn't have to be a QB either imo.
    2. The third LB. I don't know how much Ben Kline will be able to participate this spring, but I'd really like to see a guy step up at the other outside spot and take command....whether it be Kline or Wartman.
    3. Young DB's - We've brought in the bodies (although some won't arrive till the fall) but I want some young corners to step up. If we can get a couple other good, quick corners....Amos may be able to become the amazing safety most think he can be in the future (although he's a darn good CB in his own right).
    4. QB - this could have gone unsaid with how important it is to our season. Give me a guy that can manage this offense and make just enough plays to pick up a few key first downs. We've got all the parts for whoever the guy is to be successful.
    5. Second DT - We're not replacing Jordan Hill....but who's gonna take his position? Time for Baublitz/Johnson/Dowrey to show me something.
    6. Schemes - Does the playbook change with a QB with a completely different tool set than McGloin and not as experienced? Interested to see what BOB has in store for 2013 with a new guy running the show.
    7. Second RB - We won't be able to ride ZZ down the stretch like we did those last few B1G games....yes, he's a horse but somebody else needs to step up to shoulder some of the load back there. What, didn't he have 38 carries against Wisky?

  • Good post. For me, leadership definitely.

  • The disappearance of Mark Emmert. Also flowers and baseball.

How Fergie and Bench stack up for starters.

  • Looking to see the emergence of Double D.

I am also interested in seeing the weight gains from fall to spring.flex

  • 1. Absolutely. However, I feel like we'll see a different type of leadership this year. John Urschel has already been mentioned as someone who is stepping up, and I think Glenn Carson has been as well. This year shouldn't require guys like Mauti and Zordich who spontaneously organize a "rally" and speak to the press in a time of crisis. This year should require much more stable, much more normal type of on-field and off-field leadership.

    2. The third LB will be interesting. Hopefully Wooten inserts his name into the conversation as well. We should have a clearer picture on this after spring.

    3. I personally like DaQuan Davis. I think he did well for a freshman last year. Yeah, he got beat, but he's young and will improve. Taking a lesson from the NFL - rookie CB's RARELY play well. It's always their second year when they start coming into their own. Given the way Stephon Morris improved with coaching, and now that we essentially have two DB coaches, I'm confident we'll see a solid secondary, even from the young guys.

    4. QB. Will be an interesting battle. Hopefully both Bench and Ferguson perform well.

    5. Second DT - I'm concerned about this as well. Someone will obviously fill in here, but how good will they be? If Baublitz isn't playing up to snuff, I could see Dowrey or Johnson playing here. I think Cadogan was moved to DL too. Not sure if he'll find his niche here yet. Personally, I hope Gaia doesn't get lost in the shuffle and he shows something.

    6. Change completely? No. But even in the brief time when Bench played, I saw a coach who was willing to change the play calls for a younger, inexperienced QB who might be talented in different ways. How many zone reads did we see with Bench in? Something like 6-7 straight, I believe. I think the overall offense will stay the same, but things will be changed/added.

I'd like to note that something Bill O'Brien did very well was run the same plays from different formations and different setups. I have a feeling he can do something similar - run the same plays, but utilize Bench and Ferguson's mobility, maybe adding roll-outs, among other things.

    7. LYNCH! I'm excited to see him play.

  • Two words: AKEEL LYNCH! I think I saw that he is up to 217 pounds.

DT: Interested in seeing how Cadogan fits in and of course how Johnson performs.

LB: Really want to see Wartman have a strong spring and hopefully a guy like Wooten shows some promise.

Secondary: We have an experienced corps back there except for the other corner position. Want to see how Golden makes the transition over to safety and how far some of the young guys like Kiley and Lucas have come.

  • I like all your points, and leadership is definitely number one. The second thing I am really hoping for though is a better running game, like a dominant run game. If that happens, it takes the pressure off our potential weak areas next year (qb passing and defensive depth)

  • Ferguson or Bench stepping up and making solid decisions. Key to the season right there IMO.

Wartman, Hull, Carson continuing LBU tradition.

Zettel and Barnes becoming a force that needs to be reckoned with.

Finding someone to step in alongside Jones that makes their presence felt.

    A PUNTER!!!!!!

  • Im interested in Daquan Davis and his weight this spring. I Realize the potential and like his instincts but he missed far too many tackles last year. Losing morris that will be a huge concern because if our secondary was great at anything last year it was coming through and being able to make an open field tackle. the best example of this on display was the Purdue game.

Go back and watch the Wisconsin game. ZZ and the o-line were dominant. Just watched the game again and realized that Z Z was roughly our entire first touchdown drive.

Im excited to see Lynch but think that ZZ is being looked over a bit here. If had around 38 carries in that game and was still running guys over in overtime. That was dominant.

    The Heel

  • Zero injuries.

Everything else is far and away less important and interesting.

new-era said... Psu doesnt have enough to beat the conferences better teams and wiscy is one of them.

  • Yeah that was awesome. Now if we could repeat that kind of run game performance 11 more times next year and (gasp) maybe even be better than we were against Wisky, look out. Even if that happens though, I still dont see BOB rynning the ball any more than he did last year, he will keep it balanced. But a nice ypc increase would be huge.

Zwinak is a very good back. If he weren't white, that wouldn't even be a question. There is a lot of subtle racism in this sport when it comes to players who play certain atypical positions (black QBs, white RBs, white DBs, white WR).

ZZ is bigtime. So glad we have two more years with him.

  • QB race obviously.

    LB depth chart.

    DL depth chart.

Gilliam vs the 5th year whities.

    Third WR.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

Here are a few reasons i think we can be a better running team right off the bat.

Another year under fitz and mac.

Day won't be getting any carries. We know what we have we don't have to find the talent. We wasted three games last year before we realized who our best back was.

Smith and co are a year older and don't forget how young we were up front last year. i think dif and mang and smiths best years are ahead of them.

I feel really good with our talent even if it is thin.

    The Heel

  • Depth on defense and maybe for a superstar or two to emerge on that side of the ball. The quarterbacks will figure it out and we should be fine on offense but this is Penn State where we're only going to go as far as the D will take us. Would like to see another option at punter emerge as well.

    SickOLBs

  • Looking to see who emerges as the starting QB. Should be a good little starting QB battle making both Bench and Ferguson better QBs.

Looking forward to Lynch as well. 10 lbs sounds like a very reasonable "good weight" gain. Just don't wanna see the Royster Effect occur. That was some lousy weight... I have great faith in Fitz.

  • We will have answers to every one of your questions. And although we have lost a lot (leadership, Hill, LBers) I think we will be more than ok in those areas. The senior class was special, and one area their legacy will pay dividends is the lessons they have given the returning players. We WILL see players step up and take the baton from the seniors. No doubt in my mind. It's always tough to lose great players, but we do have kids that will step in and do a great job. I am excited about Wartman and Lynch particularly and hope that the competition at QB will really push one of them into being prepared to pick up where the offense let off last season.
