  • Amen... I know some here like to give LO crap, however we have not nor ever will be in the business of contacting kids. These folks are crossing a line and at some point you can bank on it hurting PSU in one way or the other.

  • It's a pretty easy solution....fans just need to stop following the 'fanatics' on twitter like PSUJunny and especially TimTolley. It's an absolute joke that some of these individuals are posting updates as authorities on PSU recruiting. They're not professionals and need to step away. Everyone needs to stop posting their tweets and reading thier blogs/articles. It makes me cringe every time someone mentions that site TimT is on.

    How about a global ban for the next 5 people that post tweets from any of these tools? And since PSUJunny is clearly stealing premium information from this site and tweeting it as his own, maybe a straight out VIP ban for him as well?

  • However, Tolley is now writing for PennLive as well.

    I can see now why so many kids are "deciding" early to get all the reporters off their back. The coaches will continue to recruit them if they want to but the reporters will move on to other uncommitted kids. You have to imagine that a lot of big programs have similar sites to BSD and VBR, add all of those along with 247/Rivals/Scout and kids would get tired of the process pretty quickly.

  • I think this site has the best and most correct info, which is why i decided to give my money to 247 and not one of the other sites...that being said, i don't fully understand what makes certian sites more crediable then others. does sean have permission from PSU to talk to recruits and report on kids interest levels....or is it more that BSD and VBRings are free sites so the guys controlling it don't need to report the truth or care as much about what they say during interviews?

    sometimes posts can be misread...I am generally interested in how websites are considered "official"

    Ummm... no, they're not professional recruiting site owners. They're bloggers. Sure they may make a few bucks from ads, but this is not their profession. Most of these guys are recent alums and presumably season ticket holders, which also makes them Nittany Lion Club members (aka program boosters). Boosters are not allowed to be contacting recruits. This has nothing to do with limiting competition; it has everything to do with damaging the program with potential recruiting violations. It needs to stop. Now

    EDIT: You guys can downvote me all you want. It doesn't change the fact that these guys are in the wrong, and it's not going to change my opinion.

  • Why do they need to talk to recruits anyway? This is what I don't get.

    So many fans in the sports world now want to be Adam Schefter and have all this inside info. They want to be the first to know, the first to report, the first to say "hey guys, I know something you don't know." Want to be called an "insider."

    I don't see any legitimate reason for these people to be contacting recruits.

    Yes, as do a few of the other larger professional networks. A student/fan run blog like BSD does not have such permission, which is where the lines of appropriateness are jeopardized. As others have mentioned, they are considered boosters. From what I've heard, the coaching staff is not keen on the idea of that group contacting recruits.

    Totally agree - nothing good can happen with them contacting kids despite the claim they're journalists.

  • I'm with you. Those guys are not only a menace to fans like us, but people like them are a microcosm of everything that is wrong with the Internet. They are a blight upon the news business. Oh how I yearn for the days when the news was reported only by the behemoth corporations that strived for accuracy and minimized bias. Pulitzer and Hearst are probably rolling in their graves at this current trend of "reporting".

  • I feel two ways about this. One is that it's super annoying to me, the recruits and I'm sure the staff. It also can be a dangerous area if they begin to go down "a bad path".

    However, the only way it goes down a bad path is if they start A) telling the kids to go to PSU and trying to convince them to do so, and B) are considered "boosters". We live in a capitalist society and as long as there is a way to make money people are going to try to do it.

    If you don't like it, stop going to their sites, following them on Twitter and posting their information here. The way to make them go away is to not give them hits. Pretty easy.

    Is this a serious question? Because it literally is a profession and not their internet hobby. They are professional reporters, not fanboys. They aren't boosters, the fan sites are. If something happens and a recruit complains, Sean gets fired, they don't.

    There's a reason the staff isn't keen on them talking to recruits. Here's a hint, it has something to do with professionalism.
