actually Paterno told the grand jury that he was told Sandusky was fondling or doing something sexual to a 10-year-old boy in the shower. Page 7, paragraph 2 of the grand jury indictment.

What am I missing here? I might be finding out all I need to by coming to this board, as sad as it may be.

Okay. That's fair. So he tells Curley that mcqueary thinks he saw something inappropiate. Curley meets with Mcqueary. At this point there are a couple of ways to go. Either Curley reports back to paterno that they looked into it and found it to be a misunderstanding . Which 2nd mile claims is how curley reported to them. Also maybe Mcqueary started doubting what he saw trying to rationalize to himself .

Or and I understand this is the dividing line. Curley says to Paterno we are going to have to call the police and paterno says no we can't take the hit. The part of a cover up I just can't comprehend is how they can possibly see him around campus. Wouldn't the logical thing be okay we won't call the cops but you got to get the hell of campus.

There is something missing and it's either very bad for Paterno or paints him in a better light than the media has to this point.

1998 Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate.

Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6's mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, "I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won't get it from you. I wish I were dead."

Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong.

The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge.

So, with this fact do you think maybe a red flag should have been raised when the 2002 "incident" was reported?

You are correct. Had the initial investigators and DA done their jobs and prosecuted Sandusky for the '98 incident future incidents may not have taken place. That is a failure of the justice system, but you don't seem to be reading a lot about that in the news now do you? Ironic how that same justice system has a shield law in place for instances in which they do screw up the investigation of a crime and allows future crimes to occur.

What does that incident have to do with Joe since we have no knowledge of his involvement in the '98 incident?

There may not be absolute proof but you and I both know that State College Police Department in 1998 does not investigate a PSU football coach taking a shower with an 11 year old in the football facility without Joe being notified.

This is the problem some of us have, the media and others are adding up alot based on speculation and assumptions. In fact doesn't it make more sense to tell as little people as possible during any investigation as to not tip off the person of interest.

Do you think Joe was aware of that 98 "incident"? When a worse but similar "incident" took place in 2002 don't you think he should have said -enough is enough? This guy(Sandusky) is a monster. He should be in prison and absolutely banned from everything PSU? Joe Paterno could have ended the monster's reign of terror. For some reason he didn't. He had his reasons. There is no way he wasn't aware

  • I didnt want to come here and get in a pissing match. I feel for you guys and the University because this situation has cast a long shadow. I was just trying to figure out why there isn't more uproar and backlash to make a clean sweep, because where I sit that would be the best way to move forward. Anything short of that seems like a shortage of leadership and resolve.

Oh well, good luck to you and yours. The actions of a few dont define the many, unless the many stand idly by and allow it. Hopefully this gets put behind you fairly quickly, and those who were harmed are reached out to and helped in every possible way.

  • Hey Outsider,

Let's get a few things straight. Yes, many of us are probably being a little selfish in wanting Paterno to stay on for his last home game, etc. It is because we know him after following the many, many, many great things he did for others throughout his life and we give him the benefit of the doubt that he did more than what it appears without the benefit of hindsight. If you think for a second Paterno is a bad person, then I think you'll be you'll have a pretty sorry life with all the other bad people you'll come accross. So, we don't like hearing "outsiders" who really don't know much about our program be the one's who force this on him when we know you'll all go back to following who you care about the minute it ends and apologize for any mistakes the people you care about make. This isn't about the kids to the media and american's who are calling for "justice". This is about wanting to see a great man fall. Because we in this country have an obsession with this sort of thing. It makes people feel better about themselves to see people mess up If this happened at the University of Maine and affected their swimming team, you'd hardly give it a second look. If this were all about the victims, it would be just as big of a story. Admit that.

  • The self-righteous BS gets a little tiresome. We know what to do and are doing it. We don't need sanctimoneous outsiders coming here to lecture us on morality. Especially when we don't know what kind of life the lecturer has actually led.

    Thanks for posting. B'bye.

Your welcome. I'll believe you know what to do and are doing it (as will the rest of the country) by who you allow to represent your school on Saturday. Remember the victims arent you and your stupid ass coach and football team, its the kids that were scarred for life at the hands of your precious coach and admins, in your own freaking facilities.

Who gives two shits about your recruiting, or some old basturds legacy, or your ability to win some meaningless football game on Saturday. Multiple lives have been destroyed, but lets go hold a candlelight vigil for Ole Joe Pa at the park!

    TheOutsider

  • There are people that are now investigating this that don't give a damn about football. Soon they will close every single loophole that so many want to embrace. The coverup is over. Use logic in your thinking. Those who don't wear Paterno tinted glasses already see what is up. The defenders will soon join the majority.

Our head coach, AD, University President, and head of the BOT are all in the process of being let go. McQuery won't be around for long either. Exactly who else are you looking to go down?

OK. Here is some logic. Those 10-12 year old kids were PSU fans. They came from abusive environments. A monster baited them with the lure of PSU football access. The admin at PSU gave the access to the monster. Regardless of the admissions and eye witness accounts of his unspeakable deeds. Those kids will watch your game Saturday. The man that leads the team out will be one of several people in authority who could have prevented it. Don't be so naive to think that in 1998 or 2002 JoePa didn't have full knowledge of something so heinous being leveled against a 34 year member of his staff within the boundaries of the facilities he built. Again, the grand jury testimony was several months ago. He knew it then. Agree? Why was Sandusky allowed to work out at the football complex last week?

Peeple lose sight of the fact that Paterno and McQueary reported what they saw. The axe has come down pretty hard on these guys, and in my opinion, some of it unfairly. The beauty of 20/20 hindsight is that we can always see the results of our actions, so maybe the didn't report it to the right people. But I have to believe that at the time, they thought they were doing teh right thing.

If I reported something of this nature and NEVER saw any results as far as actions against this animal for NINE years, I would be part and parcel to a cover up. It is beyond reasonable to think that reporting it ends your responsibility.

105 athletes who have busted their ass for a long time to earn the right to be on that field. They are representing our university, I will support them all.

If Paterno is on the sideline Saturday you (PSU, etc) do NOT know what to do. Your school and your fans are a lot better than than to give that impression to the world.

Much less, the past six months.

Either Sandusky knows something that Penn State doesn't want anyone to know or they foolishly thought they could keep a child molester under wraps.

I suppose hope this disgusting saga is never revealed because it would damage the university and "god forbid" damage Paterno.

What isn't being talked about is how the original DA just vanished into thin air and no one knows what happened. Much less, if they opted to wait to announce this until after Paterno achieved the wins record. Perhaps not expecting the backlash for Paterno to be this bad.

This is one shady, shady saga and I think there is much more to this. Question is, will we ever find out about it

The talking heads and others wanted to lynch Joe for defending Rashard Casey, Paxson, and other players who had been involved in matters that involved criminal charges. After their day in court the players, and Joe, were exonerated.

Unless and until I know more, I'm inclined to side with the man who has spent a lifetime doing things in a certain way.

There was a blog posting earlier today that stated Paterno did exactly when he should have done. Came from a former DA and professor of Law. I'm sure you won't be quoting that though because it veers from your agenda.

I saw that post. Seems he has a massive mancrush on JVP and so he is deliberately obfuscating the difference between "Doing the right thing at the time" (maybe) and "Doing the morally and ethically correct thing by following up directly with law enforcement".

Dallasparty: "With this attitude, the purest of crap is YOU.Dude, you need to start caring. And that goes for everyone else on here."

  • All these questions you're asking are questions, along with many many others, that some of us would like to have answered. Like I said above, considering everyone is supposed have due process to begin with I think Joe's 61 years of good have at the very least earned him that right in many of our eyes.

True colors revealed. Obvious bug up his/her ass about the old coach. Makes it sound like the rest of us are not in abject misery about what Sandusky did. Look, Outsider, nothing you say matters one bit. I don't care what you have to say. You are like the brave moralistic soldier who goes in after the battle is over to bayonet the wounded.
