I can't speak for what goes on in the NFL as it makes no sense with regards to coaches. But as for the NHL, do you know how expensive it is to get your kids involved in hockey? Just for the equipment is a ridiculous amount, then add in rink time, and travel. Not many people can afford it as children get older. If you look at a lot of the guys in the NFL a lot are from parts of the country that they may not have had much money. Much cheaper to play football, soccer, basketball than it is hockey.

I am surprised that Lovie Smith didn't sign with a team.
I don't think race has anything to do with the hirings this year.
I think it's probably a matter on people moving up the ranks. You typically aren't going to hire a position coach as your head coach and it also seems that focus around the league has been on offense.
Truth be told, I don't know the number of white or black offensive and defensive coordinators around the league. Lovie Smith, Romeo Crennal, Mike Tomlin were all coordinators and went up through the ranks and were successful. Lezlie Frazier is another example. If you are successful you will get an interview and or the job.

This is the single dumbest thing out there....
Does anyone think the NFL ignores white running backs, white DBs, or black QBs??? NO!!! They hire the best folks they can regardless of who they are.
The same goes for coaches... Hell who was even a good candidate? Ray Horton??? Dude has cornrows... If Chip Kelly came in with a mullet I'd lose my mind. You need to look the part.
Not to mention his team sucked.... It is like the Browns hiring the Chud... I'd jump if I was those fans!
If the Rooney rule exists we should have a white DB / RB / Black QB rule

I think that that is changing though, with guys like Frazier, Raheem Morris, lovie smith, David shaw, Kevin Sumlin, mike singletary, hue Jackson, Marvin Lewis, Jim Caldwell, Denny green, ray Rhodes, herm, dungy, crennel, fewell, charlie strong, etc.
Guys having success at all levels shows that there are many black coaches that are well qualified for coaching teams. However, I will say a majority of these guys are defensive minded coaches, and offense is the flavor of the league right now. I mean look at the scores of these playoff games.
Crennel has gotten multiple shots and if we're being honest, KC should've been nasty good this year. As for the Reid and Smith comparisons, Reid is historically one of the most successful coaches of this era, so him getting another shot is not because he's white, it's because of his résumé. As for smith, he'll be a head coach again at the latest in a couple of years when teams realize how important defense is again. Very few defenses were as dominating as the bears this past year, but that was lost with their decline the second half of the season.
Out of those guys listed above, I expect perry fewell, lovie smith, hue Jackson, Jim Caldwell, and maybe dungy to run NFL teams again on Sundays.
I will say I am a minority too because I want to share where my viewpoint is coming from.

It is changing very slowly. Sumlin is HUGE, especially in the SEC. Im just saying it's still a problem and the numbers dont lie, but you make good points. Id say its changing at an extremely slow rate. And half of the guys you listed aren't coaching. Just had to point that out... And that list is total... Among both college and the pros... Sad. And Jim Caldwell went from HC to position coach (not an OC). Lovie smith is unemployed after a 10 win season... Just reality. Not saying that it's as bad as it was back in the day, by any stretch. Just saying there is a long way to go. And college is WAAAAAY worse than the NFL. Period.

I just think its ironic that Chud just hired Horton as his defensive coordinator.
Horton had his defense ranked 12 th in the NFL and that's impressive considering the fact that the cards had no offense. Their defense accomplished that while averaging 42 min per game. As for chud, hate the guy if you want, but he knows how to build qbs and run an offense.
Both guys are extremely qualified. I think what helped Chud was that he's from Cleveland and grew up a loyal browns fan, so he knows how important the franchise is to that city and its economy.
Seriously, you wouldn't want Horton because he has cornrows? What does that have to do with his football ability and football IQ? Nothing, guy can flat out coach. Seriously, bellichek looks like a Hobo in his cutoff sleeves hoodie, but I'd take him in a heartbeat.
