The Penn State Bar thread...

  • This isn't bar related, but it is alcohol related. We should have like a Lions247 tailgate for one of the Big Ten games. The best thing about this site is that everyone is passionate about football. My friends go to the games, but they don't know the any second teamers, recruits, assistant coaches. They are fair weather fans.

In pittsburgh, the all star spots grill in Robinson is owned by one of the butya's who was the kicker on the 86 team if I am not mistaken. They turn all tv's to Penn state and put sound on in the bar / rest, it's a bar, loud and noisy, but dining room is ok for kids, etc for the family too.

This is a great place to catch a PSU game. Ken and his wife Cassie own the All Star Grill. His brother Jeff was a RB in like '81/'82 I think. Ken may have been the kicker. You will usually find them both there and always willing to talk PSU football. But they have great food. I actually drove in there last year to watch the OSU game (to get away from OSU fans at my old job and just around me in general) and joined the alumni chapter in Pittsburgh (requirement I think). I told the guy at the door I wasn't an alumni and he said you can join and be an "honorary" alumni and come in and enjoy the game. I still get the emails inviting me to events, lol.

That's what I've heard regarding Arooga's. I live right off of Linglestown Rd. and there is an Arooga's about 2 miles from my house.

My parents live near the Aroogas 39, is that place any good to go to for PSU games?

With the number of TVs every Aroogas has....and being that it is in central PA...it is a decent spot to watch a game. I have actually grabbed a table at the 39 Aroogas and been quite content for PSU games in the past. Aroogas service on the other hand usually leaves something to be desired but oh well. It isnt a PSU specific place, but with all the TVs, I always enjoy it because I can keep my eye on everything else going on while watching the PSU game. Also....tons of wing options!

    - Where do you typically try to catch the games in Pittsburgh? I'm open to anywhere, but like you, I've not found anything that's over the top for PSU fans.

If me and my friends go out to watch the game, it was usually Atria's in Fox Chapel. There's usually only four of us, but they let us do what we want with the tv setup and there hasn't been any PSU haters that we've noticed.

Me too if I feel like driving to Robinson, but if that's what it takes to be amongst some true PSU fans, than so be it.

Had lunch today with the wife while in Robinson @ All-Star Sports Bar & Grill. Great food and good set-up for watching games. Talked to the owners (not sure which one it was) but said he was on the PSU championship team which will be honored at the Temple game this season. Very nice guy and good atmosphere. Ironically enough he said this is a PSU bar on Saturdays but there wasnt a single PSU item on the wall......im guessing that's so he doesnt deter fans of other teams from stopping in.

  • Rumors going around that Bounce in NYC is thinking about dropping PSU as one of their schools. Tifwiw. I'm a big fan of Bounce, but will gladly tell them to fornicate themselves with an iron stick if this is true.

As long as I don't get caught with my flask, that's the best bar there is. And to top if off, it's non-smoking.
