The Penn State Bar thread...

    DC Area:

Car Pool in Arlington and Rhino in Georgetown. The bottom floor of Rhino is an Ohio State bar so it's a great place to rock your "Legends and Liars" t-shirt.

Car Pool is awesome. Great atmosphere, and best Mac N Cheese in Arlington for about 2 bucks, as well as $3 draughts.

  • Thanks Andrew - sorry for the duplicate thread.

  • Chicago - the Dark Horse on Sheffield (seems kinda fitting)
Though I guess the local alumni assoc chapter is trying to make The Newport on Southport & Newport the new viewing bar since the old one got bought out

  • So I just read through this thread for the first time. Didn't realize how many of us live in the NYC area...specifically Hoboken.

I used to hit up Tonic but I kinda got sick of the crowds. On the rare occasion I might still do one game there. Joshua Tree is a former PSU bar and that is where I watched the Michigan game in '05. Oh the memories from that day. They still get a pretty decent PSU crowd there and its more low-key. If you check the NYC Almuni site they have a few other bars around the city as well. One of the sanctioned bars is Bounce which was much more fun than Tonic IMO. Its almost like a super upscale Hooters. Very attractive waitresses but expensive. Also, grab a reservation if you can as standing room at the bar is tight.

In Hoboken, Texas-Arizona is the main option though Hoboken Bar & Grill usually has a pro PSU crowd. The owner is a big PSU fan and I think they even have some memorabilia on the walls...or at least used to. In Hoboken, you can't really go wrong, there will more than likely be at least one PSU fan in any bar you walk into.

Good recommendation - lets get rid of the J.S. stuff.......no need to keep seeing it on our own board. Hear enough from the haters.

    PSU Harrisburg Alumni Chapter

I go to all the home games so I'm not sure what bars around the Harrisburg area are "PSU bars" to watch the games at.

Just bought a home a few months ago and am working on a man's cave, probably will have that finished for the 2012 football season.

So...are you inviting us over when the man cave is finished:)

I'm pretty sure Hoboken Bar & Grill was owned by brothers or something and the PSU guy left and went to Texas Arizona. Some of the PSU stuff from HOBAG is there now.

Texas Arizona is fun for games but I wish they had a more centralized viewing area.

Tonic is a lot of fun for games when it is nice out and you can sit on the roof. Haven't tried Bounce yet but have heard good things. I think the owner is an alum.

Went to Texas Arizona 2 yrs ago after NYE. Crazy hungover and kept drinking only to watch MM throw 7-8 ints against Fla... Still a good place to drink away the pain...

Market Cross is a really good English style pub in Carlisle right on the main strip, Hanover Street. Usually have a good variety of beer and some good food. Not the best place to watch games though. Carlisle is actually not the easiest spot to watch a game in general. Not really any dedicated sports bars or anything. I would just drive back to Mechanicsburg or Harrisburg somewhere to be honest.

  • Does anyone know if there's a PSU bar in Vermont (Burlington)? I will be up there over Homecoming weekend this year for a Conference. The local alumni association listed a restaurant on their website that no longer exists.

  • I know alot people travel to Las Vegas during the fall. If you wanted to watch the game with alumni chapter out there I posted the link below. I lived there for 6 years so I spent my saturdays at the Alumni bar. They have changed locations three years in a row now so check the link if your going to be out there and want a place to watch the game.

Carpool in Arlington is great, that place is packed with PSU fans....However Ill be spending my Saturdays at Beaver stadium, first time season ticket holder!!

I think coakleys in camp hill is the alumni association chapter spot. But its central pa so there's quite a few. Just avoid the Irish bars which tend to be ND spots

Yes, you are correct in that Coakley's in New Cumberland is the local chapter (Capital Area Chapter) spot. I'm the IT chair for the chapter so if anybody has any questions about joining, or wants to get involved, hit me up.

does anybody know a bar in southside, pittsburgh?

I live in Pittsburgh and I'm still searching for an awesome Penn State bar. We've found a couple that were ok, but not overly leaning in the nittany direction.

Yeah I actually got the scoop on the whole ownership squabble at HBAG from one of the bartenders (the night she quit because the new manager was an ass apparently). I don't remember all of the details but it had something to do with in-laws, marital separation and all the ensuing arguments. Of course then the manager jumps ship to T/A and completely revamps the menu, beer list and interior decor while also taking a few of the bartenders. The beer club was my main reason for going to HBAG so after I finished that I quit going. T/A is great in the summer during the day when they open the place all up. Might have to get a L247 group to hit up some games there.

    - Where do you typically try to catch the games in Pittsburgh? I'm open to anywhere, but like you, I've not found anything that's over the top for PSU fans.

  • In pittsburgh, the all star spots grill in Robinson is owned by one of the butya's who was the kicker on the 86 team if I am not mistaken. They turn all tv's to Penn state and put sound on in the bar / rest, it's a bar, loud and noisy, but dining room is ok for kids, etc for the family too.
