The Jake Kiely thing got me thinking....

  • How much do current players follow recruiting? Do you think some follow it as closely as we do? Do they not really care or follow it at all? Did Eric Shrive get excited when we landed 5 star DJ? Do current players hang out or text new commits and stuff? I always wondered this stuff.

Does this really need a separate thread?

  • I'm glad u made this thread because I was wondering the exact same thing. The current players definitely don't seem to do much recruiting on social media from what I've seen but that may just be due to NCAA rules.

  • I always wondered the same thing. I think some of them do and some of them dont, just like some hardcore PSU fans do and some hardcore PSU fans dont.

I know other recruits definitely do, and I would not doubt that AB has a VIP membership here, as the article about DJ that Fitz wrote it said "Tight end commitment Adam Breneman had heard whispers of possible news coming via the internet on Sunday evening, and logged on as Johnson's commitment became public knowledge"

So he "logged on?" I am guessing to 247.

You will only see current players get involved if a recruit is from the same school or area, and there is some sort of prior relationship established. Otherwise, it is generally frowned upon unless they are hosting during a visit.

I know a former player who hosted a few kids during his time at PSU. Some of the kids were well-known recruits, and it was interesting to hear what they were like in private. Not always what you would assume.

Edit: Also, think about it like it's the military during a war. Once you're on the team, these high schoolers are like replacements. No one wants to get attached to a kid that may or may not come to your school or even pan out.

  • The kids at this level want to win, so bring on the best talent to win. If it creates competition so be it, that can only make both players better.

  • It really depends on the player. A lot of the kids on the current squad do not pay much attention to recruiting unless it is a kid they know. Most of the current players do not follow recruiting. They just focus on what they need to do and let the coaches on the recruiting. I know a lot of the players do not like to host recruits either. Some only do it because they get expense money to host.

Under Joe, at the full first squad meeting, Joe used to have the freshman to stand-up and introduce themselves. After they gave their name, hometown and position, the rest of the squad used to yell "honors". So, the freshman would then say, all league, top 150, etc. If a kid went on and on about his honors, the squad would turn on him and heckle. So, by the end of the freshman introductions, the last kids gave little or no honors.

Pretty cool. U have any other interesting tradition like things like that, that the general fan would not know?

  • I am sure I know of others, but it usually takes a post or topic for me to remember. RIght now, the only other one I really remember was on away trips there was an old leather suitcase(it looked like something from 1975) and it had Joe's name on it. Most people did not get to see the contents and most thought it was his shoes or jackets he would wear for gameday (remember the Aqua Gear jacket he wore for years). However, it was actually Joe's booze and he used to like to have a glass or two the night before the game. Most of the time, he would drink with Bud Thalman (long time SID for PSU football).

    This.

They start dealing with the freshmen once they arrive on campus. No point in getting involved with a guy unless he's already on campus.

These guys were all recruited the same way and they know how fluid the process is.
