So finally Christian Hackenberg arrives on campus this summer by Coupon Companion Plugin" href="#" in_rurl="http://i.trkjmp.com/click?v=VVM6MzAyNzA6MjM6dG8gYmVnaW46MTgxMmM5ZTM3NDA0OGIwNjk1M2Y5MGI3YzAxNWM3ZWE6ei0xMzIyLTEzMDA3MTpwZW5uc3RhdGUuMjQ3c3BvcnRzLmNvbToyNjQ3NDo5MjA0ZTI3Y2U2ZWRmODNlYTNiN2ZlODk3MTE3ZjU3NQ">to begin his much anticipated Penn State career... But the big question is "What do we do with him?"... Do we redshirt him or do we play him as a true freshman? He was the top QB in his class, Trent Dilfer loves him (whatever that means) and he's projected as a future top 10 NFL Draft pick... So do we redshirt him like Andrew Luck or throw him in the fire like Matt Barkley?? Here's my opinion... I think if by the end of preseason camp, if he's even with Bench and Fergie then you go with Hack and let him make his mistakes early thus benefiting us for his Soph and Junior season but if he's way behind in preseason camp (which I doubt) then you obviously redshirt him...

the more guys we redshirt over the next few years, the better we will be able to balance the squad out when we get 85 scholarships back.. QB, Oline, Dline, TE, and to a lesser extent LB are all positions who benefit from redshirting. LB depth is bad enough as it is so both kids might end up playing and the back-up qb will need to play early on to get some reps in, hopefully everyone else can redshirt..

Ok, here is a follow-up question.
Let's say Bench is the clear (but not by a mile) choice going into the season. The coaches can see that Hack definitely has stronger tools and considerably more upside/potential -- BUT, they also feel that as of Sept 1, Bench gives the team the best chance to win (and we and OB all want to win).
So, Bench gets the nod, and starts off well. Doesn't blow the doors off, but plays in the same ballpark as 2012 McGloin. As he's gaining experience, just like McGloin, he keeps getting better.
By the end of the year, he's solidly 2012 McGloin -- or maybe even a bit better. So now, he's one of the best QBs in the B1G, and only a true sophomore.
Hack, during his redshirt year, is improving as well. But obviously practice reps aren't helping him catch up to Bench. He still clearly has superior tools and "potential," but because of Bench being solid and so much more comfortable in-game, he no closer to being the guy who gives the team the best chance to win.
Now what?
I know, "great problem to have" and "aren't we getting ahead of ourselves?" ... Yes, but that's what message boards are for. What would you propose we do (with Hack) going into 2014, if 2013 plays out as I described here?
