The Big "Hack" Theory...

  • So finally Christian Hackenberg arrives on campus this summer to begin his much anticipated Penn State career... But the big question is "What do we do with him?"... Do we redshirt him or do we play him as a true freshman? He was the top QB in his class, Trent Dilfer loves him (whatever that means) and he's projected as a future top 10 NFL Draft pick... So do we redshirt him like Andrew Luck or throw him in the fire like Matt Barkley?? Here's my opinion... I think if by the end of preseason camp, if he's even with Bench and Fergie then you go with Hack and let him make his mistakes early thus benefiting us for his Soph and Junior season but if he's way behind in preseason camp (which I doubt) then you obviously redshirt him...

  • personally, I make it a 100% open competition for QB, and may the best man win. If Hack proves to be the best, so be it. If he is not the starter, then I say RS and go with Bench, Fergie as your 1-2, in whatever order.

Personally I would like to redshirt him but ONLY if someone else is more ready. My reasoning is the lack of scholarships. We could us him that extra year to find his replacement.

I think you redshirt him unless he is absolutely blowing the doors off the place. He has to clean up his decision making (although a competent OL will help). Just remember that Hack was a 5 star kids based on his tools and potential... both Bench and Ferguson should have a leg up in handling the offense. Frankly, I will be more disappointed than excited if one of those two do not start.

  • Man I really like this conversation WAY better than last year's PJ, Bolden, McGloin debate. Props to McG for coming through though.

I'm definitely in the redshirt camp when it comes to Hack. If Bench/Ferg are successful, Hack will have two very solid years as a starter after learning the playbook and adjusting to the college level for three years.

Of course, if he absolutely destroys the competition in camp I guess we will see a true freshman start in the fall. His inexperience could very well cost us a game or two.

    MST

  • I'd like to see him redshirt personally, but if he's the best option coming out of fall camp, then he should play. I think it's pretty unlikely that he'll be able to pick up the relatively complex playbook, get accustomed to the speed of the game, and be able to play within himself with just 29 practices under his belt.

I have seen some pretty good future QBs look beyond lost as freshman and almost all of them have had the benefit of a full spring practice. True freshman QBs struggle and often throw a ton of INTs. Unless he is clearly the best option, I think he is easily best served by taking a year to learn the system and adjust.

    spud358

  • Redshirt him, he'll need time to get used to the college lifestyle, learn the playbook, and get used to the speed of the game. I still think he could start as a redshirt freshman because BOB will play whoever is the best QB.

I think this has been discussed to death, but I'll just say that the best QB should play this year regardless. If it's Hack, great. If it's someone else, let Hack redshirt.

  • If he had been able to EE, I could easily see him starting the year because he'll be the most talented QB we have. But arriving on campus shortly before the first game doesn't allow him much time to get used to the speed of the college game and playbook. By the time he's comfy with it we're already a few months into the season and at that point it's best to RS him.

Also, if you RS him and he stays all 5 years he's our QB through all the sanctions. Would be nice to have him at the helm through those years.

    PSU17

  • I'd like to see both Hack and Brenneman RS. They would be the guys leading us through the toughest part of the sanctions.

Of course at the end of the day, I just want the best players on the field.

  • I would love to have him red-shirted because would like to have him around for 2 bowl eligible seasons.....I think he would increase PSU's chances of making a bowl during those two years with the still drastic reduction of scholarships. But then again, if Bench, Ferguson, and the walkons are putting it together and Hack comes in guns a blazin', then you have to start him as a true frosh.

  • Best case for the team is either Bench or Ferguson establishes themselves as a clear leader in the spring. B'OB picks his guy this summer and the starter gets most of the reps this fall, Hack redshirts. This scenario unfolded this past summer with McGloin over Bolden and Jones.

Worst case is that neither Bench nor Ferguson establish themselves as a clear-cut leader. Fans have all summer to pine away after the potential of Hack and B'OB is left with a QB controversy.

In either case, I expect the QB that gets the low seat on the triple-decker outhouse decides to go Pat Devlin/Rob Bolden in 2014. This would leave the staff scrambling with a month to go before signing day for that extra QB scholly spot if one is still available. I suspect they keep one in the hip pocket for a late 2014 push or 2015 EE.

Damn< i need to remember the correct spelling of Fergie.

  • the more guys we redshirt over the next few years, the better we will be able to balance the squad out when we get 85 scholarships back.. QB, Oline, Dline, TE, and to a lesser extent LB are all positions who benefit from redshirting. LB depth is bad enough as it is so both kids might end up playing and the back-up qb will need to play early on to get some reps in, hopefully everyone else can redshirt..

  • Ok, here is a follow-up question.

Let's say Bench is the clear (but not by a mile) choice going into the season. The coaches can see that Hack definitely has stronger tools and considerably more upside/potential -- BUT, they also feel that as of Sept 1, Bench gives the team the best chance to win (and we and OB all want to win).

So, Bench gets the nod, and starts off well. Doesn't blow the doors off, but plays in the same ballpark as 2012 McGloin. As he's gaining experience, just like McGloin, he keeps getting better.

By the end of the year, he's solidly 2012 McGloin -- or maybe even a bit better. So now, he's one of the best QBs in the B1G, and only a true sophomore.

Hack, during his redshirt year, is improving as well. But obviously practice reps aren't helping him catch up to Bench. He still clearly has superior tools and "potential," but because of Bench being solid and so much more comfortable in-game, he no closer to being the guy who gives the team the best chance to win.

    Now what?

I know, "great problem to have" and "aren't we getting ahead of ourselves?" ... Yes, but that's what message boards are for. What would you propose we do (with Hack) going into 2014, if 2013 plays out as I described here?

At that point, you'd have to see how they progress through spring football. If Bench and/or Ferguson improve during 2013, but level off while Hack continues to improve...then by the time 2014 rolls around, you play whoever is best at that point.

If Hack doesn't end up improving quickly enough and keeps falling behind Bench/Ferguson, then you play the best of Bench/Ferguson.

I think people expect that Hack's work ethic plus his high ceiling will mean he'll improve enough by his 2nd or 3rd year that he'll be the starter.

What do you mean now what? Now you have an extremely talented back up and a very productive starter.

  • didn't 2012 mcgloin set multiple all-time records? if bench steps in and sets new all-time records, that'd be fine with me.
