Texas vs the Nation game...McGloin

  • I did a lot of looking around on the internet and couldn't find any stats for the game, but I did see that McGloin didn't have a great week of practice. I was wondering if anyone else had heard how he did during the game?

  • I was wondering this too and hoping someone would post something. I looked around for it on tv but didn't find the game.

  • All I could find: "Fallers: Matt McGloin, QB, Penn State – McGloin has solid leadership skills and a strong arm, but he was inconsistent and was not very accurate with touch passes."

  • Still to this day am baffled that people who watch him think weaker arm. A cannon, no. But he can make the throws.

My issue with him has been, in order.
    Decision making
    Timing
    Accuracy with consistency.

Never have I worried he didn't have the arm strength to make the throws.

agreed....he improved so much on point #1 from junior to senior which allowed him to have great success.

  • I watched a fair amount of the game. MM did not have what you would call a good game. However, outside of the first two drives there really wasn't a QB who did anything well. I really think it was a function of the players around them. The blocking was suspect, and no WR ever seemed to get any separation at all. Very tough game for the QB's.

His arm was no where near what people consider strong. Now, he wasn't Zack Mills after he hurt his arm, but he was no where near what you would consider a strong-armed passer. It was definitely one of his weaknesses.

I call it a weak arm because he can't make all the throws when pressured. For example, if he needs to rifle the ball 20 yards down field and there is pressure, he can't make that throw because he can't put his body behind it, like he needs to do. It's one thing to make a throw when you have plenty of room and can put your entire 5'11 frame behind it.

To me, that is what separates strong vs weak. Make that hard throw when not balanced.

This^ plus since he is using all his force to throw a strike...his accuracy and timing are thrown off. He might see the best throw but the time it takes him to windup reduces the timing of throw and since he is throwing as hard as he can...he can't always control where is going.

His arm strength wasn't his biggest issue, but the thing some grabbed on to the most. It was below average or not on par with anyone moving on to the next level. I think that is a given. He did have more issues with accuracy such as throwing behind people or not throwing them open when it was there. All things said, he had a much better career than many care to admit to considering where he came from. He beat out the two taller guys who were more athletic and much bigger arms....aka the "higher ceiling" guys. Hopefully he does well after college and continues to mature which was another one of issues while at PSU. LIfe's a bit different when you aren't the starting QB and he'll find that out one way or the other.

This is the point I try to make when people say McGloin could/will get drafted. Scouts will put on the film and see a QB who can absolutely play when he has time and can step into his throw, but when things break down his arm strength and accuracy go down significantly. A slight drop is to be expected, but we're talking a massive drop off. You can't have that and be considered a NFL caliber QB. Anyway, I agree with your point, but I also agree with Seltz that many underrated McGloin's arm strength at least as it pertains to his ability as a pocket passer.

  • McGloin did a great job this year and will be remembered as the QB who was a walk-on and became a offensive leader. Granted when he spoke sometimes he reminded me of Anthony Morelli but hey it could have been worse. I give the young man an A+ for effort and his contributions to the team and university. I wish him the best of luck in the future whatever that may be. It would be cool if he could make it to the next level, but it is long uphill battle for many resaons listed in this post previous to my response. My one question is what would they think of Clark if he had been coming out this year comparitively to the year he actually came out??

  • For anyone who saw the game, did his arm look stronger? I know he's been working on strength in the offseason so it would be interesting to hear about his progress...
