Testing players...

  • I am not sure how many other teams/coaches do this but it really is smart coaching. Love that the staff gives written tests to the players to make sure they truly understand the concepts they are teaching. No wonder these kids are improving so much more rapidly. It has to provide the staff with a great roadmap fr each kid to improve to understand where they are missing a key concept or not grasping a key coverage or blocking scheme etc. I LOVE the way this staff teaches the game and I believe this has to be a huge factor in our improvements and success long term.

Maybe some of you coaches out there can add some insight. They definitely weren't doing this in my time.

  • We did a little in HS, not much.

College we had a test every night in camp for position meetings. And at least once a week during season. It was more of a position thing. And the first coaching staff did it less than our second regime. That said it isn't rare to see this, but OB and staff do it more than the average staff no doubt.

  • I'll be honest, when I first heard about O'Brien possibly being our coached I was pissed. I had no idea who he was other than the fact he coached for the Pats and he chewed out Brady during the one game. However, right now I would want no other coach to be on our sideline. Probably the best hire they could have made. If we would have gotten Meyer, there is no question that he would have bounced as soon as the sanctions came down. I'm beyond thrilled with O'Brien and I think it's safe to say he will be here for awhile. I love the way he coaches and I love the fact that he kept Vandy and LJ for our D. And let's be honest, most kids going to play big time college football all aspire to be in the NFL and what better coaching staff than ours to get these kids to the NFL.

Ditto! Totally in agreement with every word. I, too, was a little disappointed initially because I thought we needed a big, household name to heal the program. I can now say that we were given the right man for the job! And yes, after researching a bit on Meyer, I truly believe that is the "bullet that missed us." He would never have been able to handle the heat in the kitchen that BoB has been dealing with! (As BoB said at the BiG10 conference - and I am paraphrasing here - "you call this adversity?") Lol.

  • I love the story that Obrien told about how, during his time with teh Patriots, he always kept two notebooks: one for the Xs and Os, and one just on Billicheck's coaching philosophy and styly.

Lots of people have great football minds, but to be a head coach in either NFL or FBS takes a CEO type mentality. Obviously Obrien has the football mind, but he also had enough sense to learn from Billicheck all the peripheral stuff that goes into being HC. Managing practices, managing personalities, managing staffs, managing fans and alumni dinners, etc.

  • It funny. I think many of us had a similar reaponse to the announcement of O'Brien. I immediately called my nephew who is a smart football fan and a big Pat's fan as well as PSU student and fan. He was as surprised as I was. As soon as his first press conference I fell in love with the choice and have been a big advocate ever since. I have been around the program and generations of players back to the early 80's. Many of the letterman I know well were less than happy until more recently. O'Brien has done a great job to include them more over the last few months and it has really paid off in support. We got the right guy and he has brought in a tremendous staff. We are a lucky fan base to have him at this point in his career.

Can you clarify? Were they less than happy at the end of Joe's regime or the beginning of BOB's.

It just stuns me that Penn State got this right. With bad decision after bad decision spewing out of happy valley like a drunk vommiting all over himself, this hire was easily viewed by many as another woeful decision. I was intrigued and on board, but certainly not doing cartwheels. I'm certain they saw OB as a stopgap to weather the storm, but they may have inadvertently hit one out of the park. BILLIEVE!
