Tell me about Anthony Fera

  • His numbers look good and making an All-B1G team looks good, but what about high pressure situations?

Has he ever made any last second game-winners?

    GPie

  • No and he has a drinking problem......

So enjoy our leftovers the South is used to taking the scraps from the North.

  • Ha, I didn't know there was a such thing as mango rum. Kickers are a weird bunch though, maybe drinking lady drinks is part of his routine.

Sure, let me fire up the scouting report:

Anthony Fera, 6'2" 220 kicker from houston, tx.
K/P - Excels at distance. Live leg. Extremely live liver. Excellent at shots from all over the field. Will bring the drinking excellence of your team up to a top 10 level. Weakness at controlling himself in public after a night of hard work.

    Preferences: clear liquor.

A couple of stints in doghouse for getting picked up for underage drinking .... sat out several games last year as he could not stop his habits and was in trouble with JoePa. Wild partier, even though he supposedly likes the girly drinks more than the hard stuff! VERY strong K leg, but not very accurate. Above avg punter if he has time to get it off. Pretty sad to see him drinking and partying his chance away. COuld have an NFL type leg if he worked hard, instead he is choosing to drink hard and be lazy. O'Brien has been riding him hard about his attitude and his drinking this spring and summer, and Fera is choosing to bolt due to it. He was a scUM commit, de-committed from them to come to us and I was thrilled at the time. Now I am not too disappointed to see him go. Ficken and Butterworth will be fine and we won't have to worry about Fera's next drunken issue to hit the papers.

Yes, and we actually do need help at punting too. Punting has been terrible the last several years.

Though we do have a former All-ACC punter transferring in this season as well.

Itd be pretty neat if he could instantly upgrade the kicking game from a weakness to a strength with two all-conference transfers.

I'm not trying to rub anything in, I just didn't know where better to go to ask.

    GPie

  • Texas has a decent kicker already who also handles punting. They also signed another kicker to scholarship coming in with the 2012 class. I guess you can't have too many kickers!

One incident was when he was under 21, and he was sitting outside of his apartment building (I believe) pounding a bottle of rum.

  • This one was in April 2010...
Penn State Nittany Lions kicker Anthony Fera was cited with underage drinking Saturday after Penn State Police found him drinking near his 2102 Nittany Apartments residence, according to court documents.

With slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, Fera, 18, was found drinking straight from a bottle of Cruzan Mango Rum, which has a 27.5 percent alcohol volume, according to the citation.

Total fines from the incident added up to more than $400, and Fera is scheduled to meet Monday with Centre County Magisterial District Judge Carmine Prestia to discuss enrolling in Youthful Offender Program, a local alcohol awareness group within the borough, court officials said.

Fera (sophomore-division of undergraduate studies) was one of the top place-kickers in the nation while at St. Pius X high school in Cypress, Texas. Scout.com and Rivals.com rated him No. 2 kicker in the nation.

He has also earned first-team all-state honors and was selected as a 2008 Under Armour All-American.

Fera is one of the leading candidates to replace punter Jeremy Boone after Ryan Breen left the team for unknown reasons.

  • This one Aug of 2011....

A Penn State spokesman said Tuesday that projected starting punter Anthony Fera, a returning starter, was not practicing with the team due to an undisclosed issue but was expected to return soon.

According to a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the 20-year-old Fera pleaded guilty to charges of purchasing alcohol by a minor and disorderly conduct on Aug. 4 in State College. The incident occurred June 7. Citing court documents, the Post-Gazette reported that Fera has been involved in two alcohol-related issues since last April.

Fera wasn't practicing and according to a published report, the 20-year-old is dealing with a pair of alcohol-related issues that have occured within the last few months.

"He broke a couple rules so we're just going to play that one by ear,'' Paterno said of Fera.

"When he's gonna play? I honest-to-goodness couldn't tell you. We'll watch how he does things, makes sure he's behaving and the whole bit and I'll make my mind up.''

Agreed. Very good kicker. If he can get the right work ethic and control his drinking, NFL leg potential. I wish he was staying to let PSU and BOB help him get on track to next level.

No last second game winners, but he did nail two 40+ yard field goals against Ohio State last year, including one kick just before half time. That is a high pressure situation if you ask me.

And he bombed a 70 yard punt against Purdue when we were pinned deep in our own end late in the 4th quarter. That punt flipped field position and sealed the win.

    Cambria Nittany

  • He puts a lot of kickoffs in the end zone. That's worth a lot in terms of field position.

Thanks for the response. I'd qualify that as high-pressure as well.

Knew he punted, didn't realize he could boom them like that.

    GPie

  • He is a better punter than kicker. However, he has a strong leg and if he becomes more consistant, he should be an all league, if not all american canidate.

He has had some alcohol related issues at PSU, but it happens a lot at PSU. I am not making excuses for the kid, but my roommate at PSU had four alcohol related citations when he was at PSU. He graduated #1 in the College of Liberal Arts and now is a very successful attorney. Guess what, he does not have an alcohol problem, nor did he have one at PSU. He just made a few stupid mistakes.

If Ferra was coming back to PSU, everyone here would love the kid and consider him an asset. Now that it looks like he is leaving, he is a drunk and a so so kicker.

Watch the Bowl game against Houston this year. You'll see how well he kicks with a hang over. Actually he was still drunk in the first half. He was hung over in the second half.

Kid has lots of talent. I hope he stays but I'm sure his dad might be sick of traveling up here to bail his kid out of trouble plus his parents only get to see a few games a year.

There's a clasic story of AF his freshman year being so hung over and having to go to Joe's house for Sunday dinner with a few other players. He puked in Joe's front yard before dinner. I'm told he was a mess.
